Please help me understand, I read that this game will be instanced, I'm fine with that so long as the instance is done like WoW not Guild Wars or DnD.
Can anyone tell me what type of instanced game this will be?
I will not play a GW type instanced game I hate the feeling of zone load times I want the main part of the galaxy to me one open world with some phasing but no instances unless its a 5 man dungen type or raid, Someone clear this up for me this will be the make or break for me.

Where did you read that because i never heard that but then again i havent been following this one very closely. Anyways most likely it will be similar to GW if you think about it. I mean the load time will probably replaced with warp so you could do stuff around the while it loads into the area. Then again I have no clue just a guess really.
I don't mind Load time on warps,Dungen/raids but load times on zones is a no no for me, a MMO is to feel like world not a video game although it is, and load time take that away.
Ill copy and paste what I read give me a sec to find it.

From reading the interview on tentonhammer.com, sounds like that is exactly what they did. Which to me is a good thing, no waiting for anything to respawn, no drop looting and no ganking. Thanks for the link!
From the sound of the interview, I would assume that the five person limit on instances applies to episodes (the "quests" of the game).
The game world itself doesn't sound like it will be broken up the way Guild Wars was. Instead of going from one "zone" to another "zone" like in guild wars, this game seems to have a few main social hubs (Starbases and the like) and then when you are traveling through space you will be on a "world map" type of screen where you will see locations like star systems, star bases, points of interest and such. Entering one of those locations will then take you into a specific type of area based on what it was you entered. Some areas will be randomly generated instances and some will be common areas where you can run into other players. What portion of the game will end up being instanced isn't known at this point really.
That is my understanding based on what I've read about the game. I make no promise that I'm correct in any of what I said.

Sounds like the perfect pay to play single player game.
You're all wrong. STO will function like champions online. Each zone has a population cap, once the cap reaches close to its lmit a new instance for that zone is made. The chat for that zone is the same through all instances; you can talk to people in other instances. You cna also change your instance with teh click of a button to meet with firends and etc. The term instance is not like GW or WoW. There is still an open world, but that world has a limit. IM not going to explain it more.
Check Champion Online for your own research.
I play CO and it is a good design. I wouldn't mind it if the STo goes that route.

Some folks don't mind, others abhor the system. To each his own I suppose.
Doesn't really affect me much either way, as a long as the game is fun to play.

I think this is how it will be also. There will be no "space" in Star Trek Online just hot spots where things occur. Forget just warping out into the middle of nowhere.
Why would you want to do that anyway?! Wouldn't you rather just warp in on top of a Klingon Vor'cha-class attack cruiser and blow it up?! Then, you could warp to another system and blow up a Breen warship...but don't forget to alter your shields so their energy dampening weapon is nullified! See, you can do more than just fight in this game! You have to modify your shields for that fight or you'll lose!

That is the key for me. If they have nicely designed episodes, and I can do some multi-playing with friends, that is good enough. Star Trek is never about interacting with a lot of people anyway. There isn't even many massive battles, except may be at Wolf 359.

I think that is wrong that you can indeed fly through space and not instant to every spot, now once there exploration to the planet is instanted I think. They put a lot of emphaze on exploration according to what I've read so far. Of course we don't have a lot to go by but some people have seen and played the demos at the shows out there.
From what I remember reading of what the Dev's posted (don't have the energy to try to hunt down a quote now), thats EXACTLY how it works. You don't travel through "Deep Space" to get from one location to another....you basicaly warp directly to your mission or to whatever hot-spot you are trying to get to.
As far as "Exploration" what I believe I remember hearing about it was that those new undiscovered worlds are "non-persistant". Meaning that when you wanted to explore....you select an "Exploration Mission" and the game will randomly generate a world for you to "discover" and then port you into a private instance with that world...so you can go "explore" it. Once your done and leave the instance.... the world will disappear from the game universe never to be seen again. At least I THINK that was how it was described.
So the worlds you "explore" really aren't part of the universe...they are just randomly generated content associated with a particular mission type.
I guess you never heard of that whole "Dominion War" thing, huh?

I didn't know space had instances unless you get sucked in the black hole or something.
Hey Grumpymel how is that going to work with us being able to name the planets we find? Thought I read somewhere that we could bring friends to the planets we find and they would see the names we selected.
