My First Month's experience of EVE

noblotnoblot Member Posts: 287

Ok I see why it is addictive, althought it does take a fair bit to get into.

I did the tutorial missions, and with the help of BattleClinic's guide (and some nice 2D maps) managed to get the general ropes fairly quickly. Dispite the dreaded "learning curve" it was not as bad I as feared - although it did take a degree of internet searching (at work) to get some of the finer points. Obviously, after a month I have not really more than scratched the surface of the game.

I ended up in PvP battle that cost me 5 Mill (that I could not afford) and a new Cruiser (on it's maiden flight). While I did get some money from insurance, I think that for new players it was still rather a stiff penalty. The solution would be the same as the 100% uplift to leaning skills, more money back for noobs (first couple of weeks say).

Likewise, the 1500 skill point bonus, really needs to be 2000 (say); I had only just got the hang of the system when my bonus ran out).

Like many new players, I got, scammed, jammed, and groomed (and podded). While I can see no easy solution to this, it really made we just want not to play. Fortunately, some hilarious antics with PvP players trapping Noobs and telling them that they were now their pets sort of managed to balance it out. However it still leave a bad taste in the mouth. I am not sure what the solution is, there was certainly a number of nice players that offered advice and help.

My advice for anyone thinging of taking up the game is; don't get lured into >0.5 space not matter what the request and offer is (in my case it was taking to the guy for three day, a couple of mill to "help me start up", and a request to help him out with a mission). Someone else was very upset when they were scammed a large amount of ISK (for him) by someone claiming they needed the ISK to process their application to Goonswarm (I don't know if they were in Goonswarm by the way).

Is it worth trying this game? Definately, but be prepared to give it at least a month of game play, it is not a game where you will raving about it on day one (IMHO)

im sorry to hear that you got scammed and killed. 5 million for a cruiser is tbh a very cheap lesson, well. two really.

    1. never fly what you cant afford to lose. this is eves cardinal rule.

    2. pay attention to pop ups. to jump into lowsec you needed to read and press "ok" on the warning that other players could shoot you.

i hope you take those lessons onboard and continue to enjoy your time in eve. welcome to new eden.

The game has always been like that and as far as the Goonswarm scam I am sure it probably was a member of goons.

All perfectly legit under the rules,  one of the most wide open free for all games out there.

Thanks for the advice; I think "never fly what you can't afford to lose" is definately going to be my mantra :)

be careful of the goonswarm scam it has been running for years, the only way you you will get into goonfleet is by being a member of the something aweful forums for like 3 months i think.

correct me if im wrong but it sounds like you didnt find a good corp to join.  As any EVE player will tell you this makes all the difference to your enjoyement of the game.

    Not quite, but nearly.
How you get into gf is pretty clearly stated on their website. If you can't read that and someone scams you out of millions of isk, you fully deserved what you got.

Which just points out a very important rule..inform yourself about the corp/alliance you're going to join. You might stay there for years, and having a history of hopping corps all the time will raise questions.

Yes, people take the game pretty seriously. ;)

lol! Good story, I need to try this some time. And yeah NEVER EVER fly anything you cannot afford to lose, specially in low sec. Just run a few more missions and you'll be back in a new and nicer cruiser in no time.

Interesting that this guy really went for the long con on you, 3 days of grooming to kill you lol!? What a sociopath, yuk yuk yuk.

Can you post his name please?

Oh and how did you lose 5mil, did he random you and then pod kill you?
