I was doing some questing with my blood elf paladin like 400,000 other blood elf paladins were doing on Gorefiend the other night. I run into the auction house and noticed someone spamming gold websites in general chat. AT first I assumed this was just another level 1 asdfafer account so I held down shift and clicked the name. Level 80 blood elf death knight, standing across the room from me. So I go over and do inspect on the guy, he is fully loaded with all epics and is part of a guild. Felt bad for the guy, then chat started getting flooded with damn someone got pwned etc.
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Yeah, othing worse than getting your account hacked, and then banned from a gold spammer. In truth though, odds are that they got his account info from when he bought gold, powerleveling services, or maybe even the account. A good chunk of hackings are from that, especially the last two.

Fake blizz e-mail? Sure, maybe. Gotta be retarded to fall for those, but maybe. But a keylogger, which was logging to a gold seller? You have to know how he would get one of those... Not from hitting up yahoo, google and wowhead, that is for sure.

U'll be surprised at how many get hacked because of this

Nice quote.

Visiting WoW info sites using the same username/password or even the same emaill addy/password can also get your account hacked (because a lot of sites like that lack proper security and can be hacked easily - and the people running the site wont always be so up front about their site being hacked...)
Downloading a key logger is actually really easy. When I played we had a pally who would try any and every mod he could find. His account got hacked twice - 6 days apart from each other. Whats even worse is 2 other people in the guild shared their login info with him. The first time he was hacked we told him to change his info and run a deep virus scan too see if there were any trojans, etc. He found several trojans and had his AV wipe them out (even though we told him to do a full format). Needless to say, he never bothered, logged in on the other peoples accounts and they were both hacked.
The pallys account had 6 lvl 80s in full epics (which were all naked once he recovered his account). All together he had over 10k gold (which was probably sold to someone for the 'cheepist best gold WoW price' of $19.99). All his characters had guild bank access (I could just see the farmer screaming 'JACKPOT!' when he saw that...).
Oddly enough I didnt feel bad for him at all. I felt bad for the other 2 accounts. The pally is 24 years old, lives with mom, dad and his bro. Doesn't work, isn't in school and plays 24/7. Hes the type of person who is all about himself and how 'epic' his characters are.
The other 2 players are probably the most decent people you'd ever meet in a game. Both of them were pretty much 'meh' about the whole thing because they really didnt care (not like getting the gear was hard - nor did they care about being 'uber') But you could tell that in a way it did bug them, the fact that they put their trust in someone who them got them screwed over.
But back to the pally, yeah... I was never one at faking the whole 'I feel bad for you' thing. I also cant stand when people cry over a video game like its the end of their world when they lost gear. And I dont mean 'cry' as in 'whine and moan'. He logged into vent, popped into the channel used for non-gaming chat (mostly us helping the younger members of the guild or kids of guild members with their homework - 3 teachers in the guild...) and actually started crying. Like full on 'someone ran over my dog' crying, complete with that annoying snivveling and quivering voice. It went on for about 10 minutes, followed by the whole channel going silent... and I lost it. I couldnt help laughing when I keyed up to say something sympathetic.
After that incident he left the guild and went to a more hardcore raiding guild. He was hacked 3 more times according to a friend who still talks to him now and then.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
EPIC FAIL
