If you are aiming for a FPS style combat, just leave 3rd person out. It's not worth the codeing time when the only way to be effective in an FPS is in first person.
The more FPS you add the more ability there is to hack your game. I can 100% garuentee you after haveing read some of your threads that you will see a LOT of aimbots and hacks.
You will need to use client side hit detection, no ifs about it, same as planetside uses. The amount of data and server side computations needed for anything else is astronomical with more than 32 or so players.
Another problem you are going to have is the "EQ melee chase" problem. If a melee can't run (significantly) faster than everything else in the game then it becomes utterly impossible to hit something moving. Rangless melee weapons are almost an impossibility in a MMOG given the lag.

i think your going to be surprised on how we did this
"EQ melee chase"? hmmm....a melee class with full run buffs can out run arrows (and remember there is NO classes is FreeWorld...SO, everyone is a mage and everyone is a archer and everyone is melee)
just come and play with us next phase....we are not a multi-million dollar company (we are not even a multi-thousand dollar company), but i know you will find ours ideas very different from the rest
