They will defeat themselves if they muck it up enough. It's not a competition. If the game is good it will last. If the game is good and the devs screw it up, well, hope that they wise up.
I've never been much of a Trek fan, actually I've never been one. I do like the recent remake. The Star Wars universe is more appealing to me so I will play SWTOR. I hope it will be a long ride. I hope.
idk after seeing some updated videos of STO, SWTOR has alot of work to do. Dont get me wrong i love both ST and SW but i wish i could play both but i can only play one but i think STO will give SWTOR a run for the money.
Both games will probably be financialy sucessful and profitable but both will fail as games because they'll be shallow.
There will be no depth in these games because big titles go for the masses, and masses like limonade MMOs, orginal features and mechanics with depth are too complicated for the majority of the gamers.
Aion is the last example of this, the more simpler the game more subs you get.
So If your target are the masses and masses are mostly shalow gamers with short attention span you are making a shallow game for them.
Simple logic that always proves me right after a big title launch.
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.
I hope both are imensely successful if for nothing else than it will piss the bashers off to no end
If you measure sucess by how many boxes the game sells at launch then yes, both will be successful because of the IPs and hype.
But gamers need to stop seeing success as they are the gaming company employees.
As a gamer you need to worry about what type of staying power the game will have for you, because that's the point of a MMORPG, to play it for longer then one month.
If you drop it like a bad habit after a month because the game was shallow it's a failure because it failed it's purpose and genre, didn't keep you for longer then a month.
I keep hearing some of the Aion's players saying that Aion is a sucess and then in the same breath say how bots are annoying and game play boring.
Talking about clueless heh.
Again, any MMO that is made for the masses is destined to fail as a game, Blizzard made sure of that when showed everyone what type of a gamer is the majority.
And since WoW gaming companies try desperately to chase the dragon.
Screw sandbox, depth, originality, design inovation, art and even integrity, gimme billions.
That's why the term WoW clone is appropriate for many MMOs.
NGE was exactly that, attempt to follow the concept of simpler game = more subs.

I measure success by staying power as well and I think these two games will have staying power. I don't see either of them chasing the dragon as they are both totally different from each other as well as from WOW. I really don't get the WOW comparison at all unless you haven't really been following their development or think that anything that isn't sandbox equals a WOW clone. I played WOW and enjoyed it for the time I played . TOR and STO are not WOW clones by any stretch of the imagination.
Look, both Star Wars and Star Trek are good. I don't see why either has to beat each other. I love both even if I like Star Wars grittiness more than Star Trek shinyness.
I hope both are imensely successful if for nothing else than it will piss the bashers off to no end

I'm talking about the core concepts of the game design, dumb it down to appeal to the masses, that's what companies been doing after WoW, that's what the purpose of NGE was... IMO.
Before WoW 250K sub MMO was considered top dog, I think EQ pick was 400k or so.
WoW brought millions of subs.
MMO gaming exploded and rest of the companies been chasing those millions of players by dumbing down their games, because the majority of WoWs player base was short atention span insta graphication generation.
The WoW kiddies.
SWG had what, 200-250k subs?
That's wasn't enough for LA I guess.
So what did they do to change that?.....
Exactly.
As for STO...looks very shallow to me as well.
I was gonna play it from launch but I changed my mind after more in-depth research.
2-3 months after launch I will check out STO and do the same with TOR.
No company will ever get my money again on hype only.
I don't expect much from both games so I can only be pleasently suprised by either of them.
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

Defeat? I didn't know they were in any kind of competition.
I just found that video and wanted to make a headline attractive enough to share it with people
I fully intend to play both games.
Bah! Defeated by a measly force choke!

Same here, looking forward to both.
They're both niche games for fanboys, why does it matter which one will "defeat" the other? They aren't even competing.
You're missing the point of the thread...
I'm not actually making a statement about either game. Watch the video!
