Despite the fact that they have released some decent titles and have alot of subscribers. I'm going to have to go with SOE. Not because they release crap after crap after crap, but after the titles are released they make them crap by either altering the game in ways that aren't good for the community or just don't offer very good support for the titles that do, do well. It's like they partition their staff to have more support for less subscribers, or partition them equally amongst the games even though game A has 100 times more subs than game B.

Sony hands down. EA a distant second.

It's lonely being the only person left who enjoys SoE games...

It doesn't matter if you enjoy the games, you can still see for yourself their shady business practices and sodomy of their customers... or maybe you can't... *shrug*

Why does Funcom have such a bad rep? They only screwed up with AoC as far as I know...

  • SnarlingWolfSnarlingWolf Member Posts: 2,697

Suppose it depends on what you're determining their rep by.

SoE has obviously made some major mistakes in their history.

NCSoft makes a bunch of grindy asian MMOs which aren't fun to me, so for me that's bad rep and when I hear of a new NCSoft title I'm not going to pick it up. But a lot of people do like their games.

Funcom drove me nuts with the AoC preorder then not giving everyone early access, so I would definetly never preorder or even pay for a box game from them but I'd still be willing to try a free trial on a new game of theirs.

Warhammer was just done wrong, so obviously I have to worry about future mythic titles. But I don't know if it rules out EA as they were basically just the distributor of the title, so it's a tough call on that one.

They are 2 for 2 - Anarchy Online and Age of Conan had two of the worst launches in MMO history.

Funcom has been both arrogant and shady in the past as well, with some pretty lousy customer service thrown in for good measure.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Ditto. Some SOE games I actually enjoyed (e.g., EQ2, SWG) but the company as a whole (support/marketing/development) has the worst rep. in my book.

     TqDigital does imo.

Every game they release is exactly the same as the rest they offer. Zero/Conquer/Edemons/WarLords they are pretty much the same game with slightly different themes and a few add-on features tacked onto it.

NCsoft games are rather good aion is not that grindy it only feels that way if you played games that are pretty fast at levelin like WoW.

Mythic did mess up warhammer they were forced to release the game half a year earlier than expected. EA is to blame for that.

Warhammer is actually a lot of fun now.

    [ Mod Edit ]

I take it I'm not allowed to curse. My bad.

SOE is bad. They turned SWG and EQ2 into a mountain of poopoo! They're big fat meanie heads and their EQ2 card game is dumb!

Actually thats not true about Mythic.  Before they made the deal with EA they bragged multiple times that they could make a functional MMO in X many years...they did push back a couple of times but finally they had to put up or shut up..and they fell on their face by making a promise they couldn't keep.  Mythic's downfall is their own, EA's just gotten stuck holding the bag like SOE did with Vanguard.

The worst MMO company on the market is Funcom.  Twice now they've released horrible MMOs they managed to save the first one by making it F2P for certain parts and spending alot of time on it over the years to fix it but then they repeated this process with Age of Conan.  They don't seem to have any idea of how to get their shit mostly together before release and they talk a big game and release something entirely different.

I am going to have to go with Sony. Not only do they release crap they also turn good games into crap. They could release a game that has the best score ever on MMORPG.com and I wouldn't buy it out of fear they would just screw it up down the road after I have invested time into it. When will companies figure out that when you make changes to entice a certain kind of player, you may lose the ones you already have?

As a rule these days, I do not play MMORPGs until they have been out for atleast a year, most are just paid betas during that time.

    Rise above hate.

    Ignore fan boys.

I could almost agree with Funcom, except that they actually forced out the moron that was making such an utter mess of things.

Meanwhile, SOE soldiers on with Smed. So I had to go with SOE as my choice. Cryptic is starting to move up my list though.

Aoc was not a bad launch somehow AoC got to 800,000 subs in their first couple months.Think about it .Ask Alganon or Spellborn if they would take Aoc launch numbers.Funcom is horrible at fixing problems quickly and they don't admit problems.Aoc launch was ok,yes it has had problems that was expected all mmo have launch problems.

Funcom is probably the worst company at patching problems,The first game i have played where the patches made the game worse and add more problems.

SOE's SWG saga is by far the single biggest and most hated chapter in MMOG history. However my vote is strongly in favor of EA taking the title. They have decimated and then canceled multiple MMOG titles over the years, and have neutered and mutilated the grandfather of the MMOG genre into something totally unrecognizable and worthless. They haven't got the first clue about how to design and run an MMOG, and have no business doing so...

Try IGG (don't) but if you do you won't be complaining about any P2P comany ever again.

EA is the worst. Sony somewhat better but only because their better mmo cover up for the not so good ones. Both should probably go back to console and single player games, that's where the strength is, and sell their mmo divisions to the capable hands.

Funcom wasn't that bad lately. They messed up Anarchy, but it was 8 years ago. The current AO is old, but doing ok. I think AoC is actually recovering a bit. Secret Worlds... Who knows...

TQ has a lot of mmorpg but there are all cloned from the same game. They only count as 1 so TQ should be excluded from this discussion.

To me Project Entropia doesn't count as a game. It is pyramid marketing scam.
