Incorrect. Gamers like yourself need to be held by the hand and shown what to do and where to go while gamers like myself flourish in sandbox like games. Oblivion and Fallout 3 are my top games because of the lack of direction and freedom of choice.
Oblivion and Fallout 3???
Are you serious?
Oblivion is the pure example of a "hand helding" game, not only that, but the whole leveling system is the most casual you can get. When the whole world level with you exploration has no meaning.
Fallout3 is NOT a sandbox, it is a huge map with little to no content where only the main storyline is polished, in the end Fallout 3 is a linear and "small" game with the illusion of openess caused by its map. Fallout 3 is a shallow action RPG that was made with the intention to seduce COD gamers and unfortunately killed what Fallout originaly was. Not a bad game, but not a true fallout, not a true sandbox, and trust me you are not "special" because you like it.
Morrowind would be a better example , even GTA, Saints Row and Infamous would be a better sandbox example.
Sacred (one and two) and Gothic series are better examples than Oblivion and Fallout 3. To tell the truth Sacred 2 is much more "open" and less "hand helding" than Oblivion even with its issues.
Fallout 3 and Oblivion are in there. Where's your link?
Read again what I said.
Oblivion with its hand helding system, leveling system and casual approach destroy all the meaning behind exploration. Compare it even to its predecessor Morrowind.
Fallout 3 with its linear main story and lack of polish, progression and side quest content make the sandbox aspect much more of an illusion and a real feature.
What I said will not be in the wikipedia, it is based on player experience.
If you are basing your opinion and game experience into "links", it would be pointless, right?
So you need a link hand helding you even for you to develop an opinion? I see...
Anyway, about your "sandbox" and "hand helding" argument... trust-me you need to play more games.
Oblivion and Fallout 3 are the supra example of casual modern RPG, you and every randon today´s Shooter player has them as favorite "RPGS", "Sandbox"
Umbral says, "Fallout3 is NOT a sandbox"

You decide who right......
Cyborg don't be such a kid, if you like sandboxes you would probably even enjoy all the games I mentioned;).
And I will say it again, I didn't have a real "Sandbox" experience with Fallout 3 because its linear main storyline and unpolished and limited side content and lack of progression killed it to me... while other games that are less casuals have a much more open ended experience.
But as you need someone to hold your hand even to formulate an opinion, I am ok with it...
I will give you an example.
Resident Evil 5 is considered a Survival Horror... go play Silent Hill 1-2-3 and Siren and try to see RE5 as a Survival Horror;).
EDIT- and by the way, there is a non official version of Morrowind using Oblivion's graphics in progress...without the annoying Oblivion's hand helding...
say what you want cyborg. dragon age is great game, miles ahead of oblivion in terms of everything. im looking forward to play dlc and some good usermade stories. havent enjoyed rpg since baldurs gate. im scared to start ego draconis cause im DAO spoiled and whatever you say about linearity in this game. i like it, and ALOT of people will think the same. im glad i bought this game and ill probably play it at least 3-4 times, like i did with bg2. DAO linearity > oblivion sandbox.

I'll say it again, I enjoy some linear games and they dominate the market. I'm just correcting the comment that Oblivion is more linear the DA when it clearly isn't. You can have fun playing DA and thats great, just don't get the illusion that DA is a sandbox game.

Need someone to formulate an opinion, wtf? Get enough people together and that opinion turns into a fact. (most info on wiki is factual)
So your saying that the majority of people are wrong and you are right or are you just ignoring facts?
So I can just say Eve online is a fantasy single player game. Then you say um no it's not heres a link. Then I can just say, Oh your not an expirienced gamer so you don't know. See how silly that makes you look?
Little kid? lol. Your going to start with personal attacks because I proved you wrong. Your real mature for your age old man.
Sorry you took that so personally, but your old man compliment is welcome! I am Old, and I am a Man .... with much more life experience, game experience, and I'm going to assume much more experience with the opposite sex XD.
Lol again with the personal attack....Anyway you said you've been gaming for 25 years well have you ever thought you've been doing it wrong all this time? Also lol at the women comment while I'm getting the younger hot ladies you have fun at bingo night with the old wrinkled ladies (sorry I couldn't resist)
No, I've been doing it just right.
And don't knock those wrinkled ol' ladies ... they know how to eat a ... uhm ... sandwhich, yeah thats the ticket ... lol.

Didn't understand most of your statement, something about you reading something then I would enjoy those game you mentioned (which I own most of those games and still enjoy them today). Not trying to be mean, I just really get what you were trying to say. Please Explain?

Dudes, Cyborg is right. You're just messing around with the definition of 'linear' to suit your arguments in a pretty fallacious way. Whatever decisions Dragon Age enforces on the player aren't comparable to the ones Oblivion can give you; I mean, what if I don't wanna do ANY of the options given to me by the game? Oblivion does give you the option to ignore the main story altogether, Dragon Age does not. Games like Oblivion are linear only when it comes to the main story, but has a world that is bigger than the story and includes it, while others like DA have nothing (the content doesn't exist) outside the main story and related little side quests.
It seems like the Old Republic MMO from Bioware seeks to combine both aspects, though, so we'll see how that goes.
So I can just say Eve online is a fantasy single player game. Then you say um no it's not heres a link. Then I can just say, Oh your not an expirienced gamer so you don't know. See how silly that makes you look?
Oh I see, I need to simplify... to hold your hand so you can understand. Now I get it.
See, I am not saying Oblivion and Fallout 3 are not "open ended rpg's".
What I am saying is, with the limited and casual game experience Fallout 3 has the openess, progression and sandbox aspects are lacking and to me, sometimes those details were just an illusion or just a small detail into its gameplay. While with some less casual open ended games I had much more feeling into the gameplay. The sandbox experience was much more intense even with some games not related to RPG, so I don't see Failout3 as a real sandbox game, it would need more depth to its "openess".
Is it enough?
You may say... "ooh, but to me, the casual open ended experience I had in Fallout 3 was enough" I am ok with it, but you do prefer to use "links"... you know how ironic it is if we take your first post in this thread right?

What I am finding is that after playing Dragon Age, I have no desire to play mmo's anymore.
I have the same feeling here and I dont think we are alone. /cancelled everything. I found myself playing MMOs more solo than anything else because all my friends had moved on and "community" is really lacking in all the MMOs I played. At least with Dragon Age there is wittier conversation besides the usual crap in trade or general chat.
What i have found in most sandboxes are discarded toys and cat poop.

Thats my problem with MMO's. The community is something you need to factor into the rating of the mmo while single player game focus all of their points on the game itself. So no even the worst community could affect a single player game but it could destroy a MMO.
Edit: Also this Corsair DDR3 8GB Ram kit is making my computer fly today but wait till I start OC.
Maybe your playing it wrong? Also Your opinion = 1 gamer Wiki "opinions" = Millions of gamers
You getting the picture yet?
Yes I got the picture.
The valour of majority.
Of course Oblivion and Fallout 3 are the sandbox and RPGs of the majority.
... just like WoW...
But just like WoW is not enough for some players, Oblivion and especially Fallout 3 is not adequate for everyone. Even players who enjoy sandboxes.
But remember, if majority opinions would be equal to ultimate truth... well...I think you get it...
Nope, please explain. Also how do you know you enjoy sandbox when you didn't enjoy the defining games of sandbox play? Maybe you just don't like non-linear games which is fine because everyone has their own playstyle. Linear games can be fun but my opinion of them is they have limited gameplay and I compare then the movies (which I also like watching).
I am not getting into what is linear and what is sandbox. Its like arguing about How many angels can stand on the head of a pin.
I will say that I have played Baldurs gate 1 & 2, Icewind dale 1 & 2, Oblivion, Morrowind, NWN, Mass Effect, Fallout, Fable 1 &2 and sadly I have liked them better than any MMO I have played. (I have played just about all of the popular MMO's and some not so popular)
I don't blame you for thinking the way you because you've been spoon fed storylines in games and you are used to being given a direction. This is why you had a hard time understanding and playing Oblivion. Freedom in a game world is overwhelming to gamers that aren't innovative.
I didn't have any problem playing Oblivion or Morrowind and as I said I still play it. But I don't feel it does a great job with story pacing as I pointed out.
Most stories don't stop for a while so the read can spend time in another part of that story without regard to the rest of that story progressing without them. Which it should. If Oblivoin had a moving story that allowed the player to drop in and out but kept that story moving with or without the player the player might get a better sense of the drama.
And as I also get my story fix from other places such as books and theater I'm fairly confident that can take on different types of story telling without getting confused. See last year at Marienbad above.
Story continuity was messed up in Oblivion I agree to that (although you could make it work if you were rping) but saying that their is "too much freedom" is a red flag to me saying that you do not understand the non-linear sandbox game. The whole point of the game is freedom to go anywhere and do (almost) anything.
I don't think I said there was too much freedom. I think that was definitely a strong point for both oblivion and morrowind. Heck, the first time, in Morrowind, that I left the first office and I got a message that said "well, there is a store up on the left and you can get stuff at x, you are on your own, good luck" (paraphrased of course) I knew that I was in for an experience that was goingt to transform my gaming life.
I just think (besides the odd pacing in the story) that the stopping and starting points need to make sense. So sure, we need to get that amulet to Jeoffrey and we need to take kvatch but the choice shouldn't be "hey, we are about to take kvatch back but you can come back in a few weeks, I'm sure we will be here.
Stories are linear (unless of course you want to adopt experiemental non-linear story telling. One might be able to go here and there but the major plot points are going to unfold right after each other so that they make sense.
With a game like Baldur's gate or oblvion one can visit different places but in the end it really is more about the player within the story and less about exlporing an open world.
I have to confess that I sort of wish that the world of Dragon age was more open as now I have these high level characters but they sort of stop until the next downloadable content.
Oh well.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Bethesda is good. They can make a good game. I like Fallout 3. I liked Oblivion. I liked Morrowind.
But Bioware IS fucking awesome.
Every time I play a BW game, it reminds me of why I fell in love with the RPG genre to start with. Those guys can really make you feel like you're part of a story that is being written AROUND you rather than written FOR you.
Dragon Age isn't a sandbox. It has tons of invisible walls and, while it does allow you to choose which parts of the story to experience first, it does have a linearity at its core .. but I don't mind. I'll take engaging story over the ability to wander aimlessly through a relatively empty open world.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
There's absolutely no point comparing which game is better then which, all have there merits, and it all comes down to individual preference (to state the obvious).
For me, if someone would make a game with Oblivions open world, Dark Messiahs FPS combat, Dragon Ages story telling, and with a dolop of The Witchers lore and dark backdrop, combined with some awesome visuals and a killer soundtrack, that would be a game I'd buy.
Amaze me with random events that happened due to highly complex engine and AI interactions, not stupid scripted events.
What happen to play the game the way you want?
Just watch the cinematics on youtube and avoid the awkward gameplay.
After having played an RPGs like Gothic 2, Freelancer, Space Rangers, those type of MMORPGs such as Baldurs Gate, Never Winter Nights, Dragon Age simply dont attract me.
I dont get immersed with stupid text chat, give me voice over with personality or dont bother making an RPG.
No more stupid AI doing nothing and just standing still. I want them to mind their own business and interact with the world with the same rules as I do.
What about the story WAITING FOR ME? I want the story to progress regardless of my actions! When the Dragon come and if you dont help, the village will burn and people will die! Thats what I want. I dont care about important NPCs, make it so THINGS PROCEED REGARDLESS and let me experience the world as I interacted with it.
STOP FORCING ME INTO YOUR STUPID CONTENT. Make the content and I will play it if I want, if I dont, someone else will, but dont fucking force people to experience everything you wasted your resources to make.
When my character attack, I WANT TO FUCKING CONTROL THE SWING, not press hotkeys, not wait for things to happen. I want to control it, time it, my reflexes, my timing, my distance.
NO stupid collision detection. No stupid auto hit spells and projectiles. I want to fucking move my character during the fight and get out of the way if I can control it.
I cant understand this people kissing Dragon Ages ass. Unfortunate people who never tasted what Im talking about.
Dragon Age is stupid. You have no Freedom. The world is not Organic. And RPG without Organic world and Freedom?! Everything is scripted. Or, maybe he likes 'games', not somewhat playable saturday morning cartoons. DAO is the same crap as Mass Effect was - not actually a game but not a movie either. If this is where games are going to nowdays there's really something wrong in the world.
Comments
I have a hard time giving any developer shit that created the cinematic masterpiece Mass Effect.
Bioware is fucking awesome.
You may enjoy Bethesda's Rpgs more (as do I) But you can't deny how freaking awesome some of the Bioware games are.
How many home runs can Bioware hit?
BG1&2, NWN, Kotor, JE, ME and DA its crazy. Can these fucking guys make a bad game? even that sonic rpg was good lol.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

You may say... "ooh, but to me, the casual open ended experience I had in Fallout 3 was enough" I am ok with it, but you do prefer to use "links"... you know how ironic it is if we take your first post in this thread right?
Maybe your playing it wrong? Also
Your opinion = 1 gamer

No and no. Both BW and Bethesda are fine.
Ok thanks for the input.

So I agree I am about to give up on MMOs.
Oh well.

Dragon Age is stupid.
You have no Freedom.
The world is not Organic.
And RPG without Organic world and Freedom?!
Everything is scripted.
It sounds to me you like FPS games, you could have just said that.
So...you don't like traditional RPGs?
Or, maybe he likes 'games', not somewhat playable saturday morning cartoons. DAO is the same crap as Mass Effect was - not actually a game but not a movie either. If this is where games are going to nowdays there's really something wrong in the world.
