Actually about 2 or 3 months ago they released info saying that there are over 500k subs and 2 million characters. Remember, each additional character costs $1 which is probably why they released that extra info. The game DOES in fact have 500k + subs probably because its so damn addicting and you end up spending all your time with ONE character.

May i get the link for this?

I'm not sure if he happens to have a more recent article that says it.. but I do know that the FFXI wiki has it as of 2008 as does MMOGchart, and they have never really gone below 500k for the most part.. so I'm fairly sure its accurate to say it hasn't changed much.

AO was okay for bit but i got bored. FFXI will take over your life it is not friendly to casual players. and for those who think FFXI will die with FFXIV i'm here to say it won't it might but i don't think it will. why i think it should be okay well look at everquest it still going strong even though everquest 2 and loads of other fantasy mmo's "WoW,WAR,LOTRO" yes EQ1 had strong following before these arrived but it's very aged as is UO. will FFXI lose players yeah but i think there will still be loads FFXI who stick to the game they love.

I don't suggest starting to play FFXI.  I dont know anything about AO though.  FFXI used to be an amazing game but now the servers just don't have enough people for it to be fun.  There is a lot of waiting involved.  Its definately no longer a game you can just jump in and play.  I found myself waiting about 2 hours to get a group and start leveling and this was about 2 weeks ago.  I just cancelled the account.

Yes, I know but i couldn't get a party as a Red Mage... thats not normal.  About 2 years ago when i played, i got a party invite as a red mage before i was even fully logged in.

Other then the waiting for a group FFXI has got to be the best MMO to date. I have not played in a few months but lately been having an urge to get back into it. There is also tons of stuff you can do while searching for a group I think that is why people complain about the wait time between groups you can do quests, crafting, and hunt Notorious Monsters(Little Bosses) and that's only a few things but there is a ton more stuff to be done. You really got to work for your stuff in FFXI which is why I like it so much.

Now talking about it has made me want to install and play again.

I have never played AO so I really can't speak for that game but I have played FFXI since the PS2 release on and off and it is just an amazing game.

    most of the people you hear complaining about having to wait for groups are the ones who sit in Jeuno or white gate with their thumbs up their rear just waiting for someone /t person {PARTY}{DO YOU NEED IT?}

They don't take advantage of anything else you can do while you wait, like fields of valor or crafting, or some of the easier quests. Or, even try forming a group yourself.

AO is a billion times the game FFXI is. It was designed for the ps2.... People here play it with a controller, does more need to be said?

I'll try to do some more research, but I don't understand why its that hard to believe. FFXI has pretty much been stable this entire time. I was playing it when WoW came out, and all the other popular mmos.. it never really affected FFXI. And If I do some digging I'm sure I can find a post where the devs themselves stated such. Not sure why I need to bother and waste my time, it doesn't really matter whether or not anyone here believes it.

Personal Preference speaks volumes. I uinstalled AO after about 30 minutes of play. I played FFXI for nearly 5 years. I think the games just appeal to different groups. I'm not saying AO was a bad game. I just didn't like it.. Someone else may love it.

     It is entirely personal preference.

I tried FFXI when it was released and I didn't like the control scheme, the general population wasn't very helpful at the time and the magic race with the baby talk drove me absolutely insane.

AO on the other hand it probably one of the hardest, deepest and most customizeable MMO's out there.  I've played pretty much every major release since UO and with maybe the exception of Eve, AO has by far the most depth.  It's pvp system is very well done in my opinion.  With Battlestations, tower battles and open pvp areas there is always meaningful pvp around that you actually gain items/power from.

If you like to be challenged and don't mind a very steep learning curve, AO is for you.  It's definately a niche game though.

Yeah, I enjoy challenging indepth games. I just didn't like the setting for one, and I didn't like the combat. Just didn't feel right. I was already a FF fan to begin with so it was only natural.

It's not too hard to believe with the prices and all. I just kind of wish I had a notable reference.

Thanks to all who posted opinions. I decided to stick with FFXI. After checking out other forums and such, it seems FFXI has a very more active community and more group oriented like others have said, which I prefer. After trying both trials, I have to say I prefer the look and feel of FFXI as well.

After reading some posts here about the 500k playerbase, I have to agree. Everytime I checked there was over 1500 players on the Garuda server, and I'm pretty sure FFXI has 32 servers. If I do the math that's an average of almost 50k players on at one time, and if 1/10 of players are on (which is a reasonable guess since FFXI shares servers with other countries) that adds up to the 500k playerbase.

    Edit: I can't spell today.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

Garuda is where i started a player years ago and is the home of the infamous Gardener ,her name slips me now,but she has the biggest site dedicated to gardening. One thing however Garuda is one of the lower populated servers,i also have players on Pandemonium again a low populated server.

Pikko :P Already heard about her, lol. After posting in my servers forums on this FFXI fan site, I already have a linkshell (guild) and they're being very helpful. If Garuda is one of the lower population servers, I don't see how anyone can think FFXI is dead or dieing.
