Right! Here we are again, annoying the community at large with my whinings and askings! No point in wastin' time anymore, so let's get right down to business!
So here's what I'm looking at.
1) Community. Actually, scratch that, that's about the only thing I'm looking for. Someone to group and socialize with, while grinding my life away. Most communities in MMORPGs suck bollocks, so I suppose it's the hardest to find as well. But I'll let the list go on.
2) RP in some way, shape, or form. No, seriously, RP community sucks about as much bollocks, as the regular one.
3) More relaxed gameplay, maybe something closer in feel to EQI-FFXI, where your twitch-skills matter much less.
4) I'd prefer Sci-Fi setting, actually, but don't mind fantasy ones.
5) Must accept non-US credit cards.
6) Some gameplay customization options and less reliance on pre-set "builds".
Feel free to ignore this thread, as always.

Why aren't you playing FFXI?
Other than that, the only game I would recommend is Lord of the rings online, EQ2, or EQOA for the PS2.

Currently playing:
FFXIV on Behemoth, FFXI on Eden, and Gloria Victis on NA.
You just described FFXI besides the Sci-Fi setting.
Playing - EVE, Wurm
Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi
Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem
Have you tried eve online yet?
or maybe earthrise when it arrives will suit you
Idk...maybe Anarchy Online or Jumpgate?
Check out the MUD I'm making!
I will play it, more or less was looking for the second one. LotRO is kinda meh, I won't support EQ2, because of the Station Cash thing and I don't have the fat PS2
HDD for EQOA, although I really want to play it.
Other, than that...
Will look into these two.
What about PSO?
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
EQOA doesn't use the hard drive, only need a memory card. It works on the slim ps2.
EQ2's cash shop is fairly useless. There's no game breaking items on there. Most of it is cosmetic and house items.
FFXIV is going to be a very different game than FFXI.. I'd dare say.. night and day.

I took advantage of the Steam sale, yesterday, and got Fallen Earth for 25.00 and so far I am really enjoying it. The first thing that I did notice was the community; I have not enjoyed talking in an MMO for a long time and the community was rather awesome, and mature, so I had a blast. And it is a sci-fi MMO, in a way. As for pacing it is FPS so the action is faster. But give it a whirl if you have been curious. I actually enjoy it more than I thought.
Have you thought about giving Fallen Earth a shot? It's post-apocalyptic. I know that there are several RP clans running around and really it has a great setting for it. The community so far has been outstanding. I've been playing two weeks and it's been unlike any other. The Help Channel is great, if you have a question it gets answered almost immediately. Its not 100% group oriented, but you can group if you want to. Getting into a good clan will help with that sort of thing.
Its one of the only games I've ever felt relaxed in. I don't feel like I have to get to the end game immediately, I can take my time and enjoy the scenery. It has one server, the areas are friggin ginormous & there is no instancing, so no loading screens!
I'm fairly sure they accept non-US CC's because we have one irish dude & one english dude in our guild.
They may still have the $25 sale going on with Steam. If not, then it'd cost $50. I'm not sure if there are any trial accounts being given away at the moment because I know the Escapist has run out of keys.
But I would check out the game if you're in the market, it really is one of the best I've played in ... what feels like forever.
Agreed - based on everything your stating, the best game I can see that would fit your bill right now is Fallen Earth.
If you DO happen to pick it up, feel free to shoot me a tell ingame (Player name: Tox) and ill try and help ya out!

Really? I might just Ebay it, then! How do they do patching, though>
It's the principle of the thing, and there are XP pots... Plus, i got kinda burned out with it, been my first.
And that's why I'm vary. Don't have enough info yet.

Oh I see. I thought I had come across a post from you before.
Well I guess as soon as you ramp up your PC a bit, FE would really be the place for you, but yeah like they said you're gonna need a bit more RAM and maybe a better CPU.
If you do eventually get a chance to try it out in the future, however, I'm Pippa Rydell in game and always willing to help ya out.

Since my PC is not THAT bad, I'll buy it first and ask questions later. That's how I roll!

Wow, my first post and it will be positive. How unusual here at MMORPG.com
I was in the same boat as you -- looking around and finding nothing that interested me. Until I found Dungeons and Dragons Online, that is.
I was never a pen & paper RPGer. I knew people who played D&D, but it really never interested me. Looking back now I realize it was the beginning of the genre that would evolve (unsucessfully) into the computer/internet MMO we have today. I also knew that DDO was a translation of the D&D 3.5 ruleset and it interested me to see how they implemented that.
To my surprise, I really like the game. I started with a free account and got hooked. I now pay my $15/mo fee and feel I'm getting every penny out of my subscription. I'll be playing this one until they rip it from my cold, dead hands.
Having said this, I will tell you that DDO is not for everyone. If you are used to the vanilla everything-done-for-you type of MMO you will not find it in DDO. Also, if you are primarily a soloer, you should probably forget about DDO. There is solo playability, but it's not all that interesting. For those people who complain about that, I say:
"DDO is a translation of the pen and paper D&D. How many people do you know who sit down and play a pen & paper RPG BY THEMSELVES?"
It's not designed to be a solo game.
I think it fits all your qualifications minus the sci-fi. There are, however, some minor sci-fi-ish elements to the game.
Give it a try if it interests you. I know I'm happy I did.

Hey, you know what? I wil. I remember trying their EU server, and having a blast.
Does the subscription come with their item mall cash?

Yes, you get 500 points per month to spend in the store. It's 1000 right now, through mid-January, I believe.
BTW, the items in the store are not like you find in typical item mall games. The really great armor/equip/mats are still only found in-game.

EVE is the game OP should play, surprised to not see it on his list yet.
There are entire role playing alliances, and many corporations that also enjoy RPing, join a good corp and you'll always have mates to hunt with, and its Sci-FI.
Who could ask for anything more.

One last question, do they accept non-us debit cards?

Heavy PvP (almost to the point of ganking, OrSoIveHeard) and merciless to newbies. Dunno, tried it two times, couldn't get into it...

I checked the forums and read varied responses. Some people say they have no problem with non-US cards and some say their cards didn't work. You'll probably just have to try. You can always buy game time cards or use your debit card with PayPal if you can't get it to work -- both are accepted by Turbine.

Turbine Downloader refuses to work for me. Great. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

I generally don't use "downloaders" -- they always seem to be a pain, regardless of the game. Try downloading the full game, standard or high resolution, your choice.

Don't feel bad, I tried for almost a year to find the fun, and never did. It was always just over the next skill, or just around the next system, or coming with the next expansion...
