Is EVE PvP only?

From what I've read about EVE it seems heavily focused on PvP.  Is there much to do for carebears in this game or is engaging in PvP pretty much required ?

Carebear wise you can do missions or mine stuff or invent. PvP is not required per se but many times you will be forced to fight for your assets.

There are a ton of PvE-centric pursuits that you can do in EVE Online, from mission running to mining to building, inventing and trading. However because EVE is so PvP oriented at it's core, the PvE gameplay becomes pretty boring and it's hard, especially at higher levels of PvE content to avoid PvP.

Unless you're into trading and amassing isk for the sake of amassing isk for some odd reason, yes, as its the only part of the game that won't make you want to pluck your eyes out in frustration and boredom.

Almost everything in EvE is about PvP... but PvP is much more than just combat. A top market trader can do more damage to his opponents in 5 minutes than a guy in a titan can do with a doomsday.

It’s really a question of how you approach the game. EVE has an abundance of both types of game play, but the main goal for both is the support and defense of a Corporation or alliance.

If you think of it in terms of, I’m going to be a solo carebear and play only for myself you will fail at this game. Don’t want to offend anyone but that’s the truth. EVE is not like most games in that regard.

Corporations have many PVE focused things they need done.

If you want to focus on the PVE side of EVE, the trick is to do it with and for other people. Production, Invention, mining, logistics, plex’s and ratting all need to be done for a Large group to truly be successful.

the PvP in the game has a high death penalty. When you die, you loose all your gear, some of it is destroyed but some is left at your wreck (a friend might pick it up and get it back to you, maybe). As a lot of stuff is destroyed it needs to be replaced.

Here is the kicker, most of the stuff in the game is made by players (almost all the rest is found in npc wrecks). So the PvP in the game directly generates a need and a reward for carebears to do stuff.

There is the most elaborate depth of carebearing in the game that I have ever heard of (but i am not extensively familiar with other MMOs) and there is a high demand for your goods with a robust and complex complex economy.

If you don't come to pvp, pvp comes to you, to be honest.

I've been playing 8 months; so far about 45 seconds of that time has involved PvP combat. It doesn't take much time to get blown up :)

I wouldn't say its pvp only. For the most part alot of people who start the game only do the non pvp stuff to learn the game and whats what. Others have mentioned what types of things you can do.

Missions (quests), exploration, wormholes, mining, manufacturing, trading.

I didn't come into the game for the pvp i ended up doing it after trying out a lot of the other parts of the game.

It gives you quite a bit of freedom in what you want to do. PVP isn't arena based so isn't instant like fps. You have to go find it.  Faction warfare i hear is quite good for that though accessible to new guys aswell as having some vets who genuinely prefer it to the "end game" of 0.0.

Give the trial a go, do the tutorials and just explore the game for what it has to offer.
