If you want to play a game then you are better off with fallen earth.

Mortal Online is in deep beta and hopefully in the process of fleshing out the features and content. But it is not really ready for just playing.

Fallen Earth is a released game, while MO is a rough beta that you should only pay for if you are interested in investing both time and money to help the developers bring this game to release.

Just don't want to see another thread on the forums about how MO is a scam.

General rule for online games: Never buy it before you try it, especially if it hasn't been released yet.

There are far to many disappointing games being released to gamble on if it will be a fun game to play, unless you have money to burn and it doesn't bother you to pay $50+ for a game that you end up disliking. There are lots of open bets around and most released games have a free trial available.

For me, its similar to buying a car. Just because it look pretty on the sales lot, I'm not going to risk my money on it without a test drive. Lately, there are enough good free-to-play games available that I haven't bought or subscribed to anything for the last 6 months (currenlty playing DDO).

One last thought: If you are playing in beta and the games is due to be released within the next month, don't delude yourself into thinking that the released version will be significanlty different. There may be some functional tweeks, but there won't be any new content or features added at the last minute (unless the developers are really stupid enough to put untested code into the final release).

    First off.

Not every MMO lets you try before you buy.  A lot don't do that for some time till after release, other never.

Gaming in general to be honest.  99% of all my games, both online and off, didn't allow me to try the game before I paid for it.

Test driving a car doesn't tell you shit about the car, except how it runs new.  If it did, there wouldn't be lemon laws.  Do you have any idea how good a busted transmittion can run if you stuff it with sawdust?  Like new, for couple of weeks.

    You're last thought is nonsense.

SV is releasing another large patch on monday, it'll contain new features and content.  Some of the stuff they'll release on monday will make the client significantly dif. then it's been the last two weeks, as did the previous patch, and the one before that, and the one before that.  After mondays patch they have one more huge content patch planned before release.

Basically your last thought is completely false.  Atleast in MO's case.

Yeah, if you buy it now you can play it today. It's beta and have bugs but it´s really promising. Many people have fun in the beta today. Also tomorrow another larger patch comes. Then we might see, more skills, more content, thievery and off course improvements and bug fixes.

You must be living in an alternate reality. At least 90% of the games that I look at have free open betas before release (I'm in 5 betas atm, 3 of them open). There won't be demos or free trials immediately after release, because they are too busy handling all the new customers, but a couple of months later after people have used the included first month, subcriptions often decline and they will start offering free trails to attract new players. I have tried at least a hundred games in the last 5 years and didn't have to pay for any of them before I tried them. If you didn't make up the 99%, you must be mostly buying console games as PC games are widely available on a trial basis.

Test driving a car isn't foolproof, but it certainly is better than buying it from a picture.

When it comes to releases, you clearly don't understand the software development and production process. In order to have a box in the store available for purchase, first they have to have a well tested final version of the game (should be at least a week or 2 of testing). Then they have to ship it off to manufacturing to produce the CDs. Then it has to packaged up and shipped to all the stores in time for release day. So all this takes 3 to 4 weeks from the time the last build was initially made. This is why the released version be similar to, if not the same as, the version played in open beta in the month before release.

If you disagree, please do more than make wild claims without any basis in fact.

Note: I also do not think about buying cars that are not painted... betas are unfinished!

An MMO is not busy in the first months with all the new players, they have automated systems for this and specific departments. They are usually busy after release because they released an unfinished game or were unprepared and realised how much of an arse they look. There is a difference between the player support and developers... player support are not developers.

The box for an MMO is irrelevant in beta testing since beta testers are not testing the DvD, they are testing the client. Any flaws found can be patched when you install. This issue was proven with the Australian release of WAR, which found the Disc flawed and buggy when installing, whereas the original client did install, they presumed the disc worked because the client did. Please do not be hypocritical when criticising someone else.

You are missing the point. Unless a release is a complete flop on release, there will be more players in the game on release than is beta, so they will be fixing problems that the increased player load has brought to light. This means that they have no need to attract new players with a free trial until they have things working smoothly for their existing players. In the case of WoW, the release was so successful that even 6 months later they were still expanding the server farms to handle the unexpected demand.

Did I say anything about having a box in beta? NO, so why are you bringing it up? I was trying to explain why there is little content change in the month just before a game is released. The focus is on fixing problems. Its usually the same in the month just after release. Did you understand this or are you trying to change the subject?
