Losing Hope In MMO's.

VoomekVoomek Member Posts: 55

Long time MMO'er here, and WoW nerd. But I've come to the last straw. I can't stand the idiots and the easiness of the game. It's unbalanced (yes pallies, I'm talking about you) and not fun anymore. I tried LotRo, stupid game. Weird animations, no endgame. Tried WAR. Buggy piece of crap (my map disappeared). So I'm losing hope and thinking of just quitting.

And no. I don't want to play Star Wars.

I would like a generally awesome MMO, with both PvE and PvP endgame. Lots of class customization (talent trees, whatever) and a fair amount of character customization. Pay to play is wanted (because of quality) and no item shop please. I also want a mature community, and a fair amount of things to do. And... unique! Suggestions?

EDIT: I was also one of the unlucky souls who preordered Aion... so yeah.

Well you seem to be looking for the same thing that most MMOers are looking for. What I like to call the "Perfect Game." Alas, this game doesn't exist. So were forced to settle for what's on the market today. Have you tried EQ2? It has great PVE with a ton of quests. The game also has some great customization. But it is lacking on the PvP side. EQ2 also has 1 more thing you’re looking for which is a great community. I'd say this would be your best bet. It has a free trial so you really don't have anything to lose. Give it a try.

I can't go without the PvP.

  • Try Fallen Earth... after long years of conditioning from WoW it will be a steep learning curve and not sure if you'll be able to make the switch... in fact, I predict you'll go back to WoW but you never know.

  • skeaserskeaser Member RarePosts: 4,205

AoC is the closest I can think of for PvP and PvE, but character customization and progression is, well, shitty.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

    Maybe check out aion?

EDIT: just read your edit...well in that case i would also have to go with the fallen earth suggestion but you gotta give that game a fair chance before writing it off.

You could always go back to Ultima Online. :P

I would have to agree with giving Fallen Earth a shot. It is different and entertaining for those evenings you are home bored. Besides that none of the current MMO's come to mind and none of the ones planned for release even look that good.

    - Case: Thermaltake Kandalf Black Chassis
    - CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (OC'd 4.2GHz on Water Cooling)
    - Memory: Mushkin 8Gb (4x 2Gb) DDR3 1600Mhz
    - HDD: Dual Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM
    - GFX: (2) XFX Radeon HD 5870 in CrossFire - New upgrade! :)

You and me both. Tried giving Aion a shot again even because I was desperate and failure continues to abound and couldn't even really get a weeks enjoyment out of it. Parts of LoTRO make me want to try that again, but there are just as many parts that don't interest me. All in all, can't find a damn thing that I have the slightest desire in playing anymore. Personally I'm just going to kick around in Allods, being free and all, until I get tired of that or until someone actually uses their freaking heads and releases something that isn't a complete self obsessed POS.

Fallen Earth was ok, but after about a month and hitting most of the minor goals I set out, I kinda lost interest /=.

Wish Eve wasn't so horrendously broken/boring, as I like what its going for, just not how they're doing it.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Don't blame the MMO's just because you are burnt out of the genre. No mmo will ever be exactly what you wanted. To me, it sounds like you could use a fresh taste of Pre-tramel UO, and you'd need a time machine or a private server for that.

    FFXIV.

No PvP endgame though. Well, you can't have the cake and eat it too ;D.

But yeah, it's your best bet. Hopefully you're not final fantasy-phobic because there's really no need to be.

eq2 does have a PvP server, not that I personally would think of eq2 as a great pvp game - tho they have made it easier with pvp gained gear these days.

Fallen earth is a great game and not that old yet, your negative tone (sorry if I read you  wrong), suggests you really should take a break from MMOs tho

EQ2 would be awsome if it had a influx of new players. Alas, it doesn't get enough newbies to compensate for the ammount of high level turnover. To sum it all up, your best bet to enjoy the "Meat" of the mid levels is if you enjoy soloing by yourself and being excluded from all the mid level group content untill you reach level cap.

It's such a shame really, all that amazing content, and it can't be fully appreciated due to the one, primary need. Other players your level. It's kind of dumb too. If you think about it, MMO's are built for the long haul. The longer since their release, the more content that is able to be added, and the better the game can get, coming ever so close to that ultime MMO youve always wanted. But by the time it gets to that aged, well defined, quality sate with content upon content. All the players have fled!

Have you tried Age of Conan? It has PVP and PVE, good class and character customization, a unique combat system, as well as really nice graphics for an MMO. It has gone through many changes since launch, so it wouldn't hurt to give it a trial run.

  • fodell54fodell54 Member RarePosts: 865

AOC does have everything that he’s looking for accept for 1 thing. That’s a mature community; AoCs general chat normally looks like Barrens chat in Wow. That’s why I recommended EQ2. The community in EQ2 is outstanding and you can argue it’s 1 of best out there. EQ2 does have PvP in world form on PvP servers to Arena type PvP on the PVE servers. But it’s still lacking at least I never really got into it. Anyways, both these games currently have free trail so you have nothing to lose. Go give them a try.

    AOC: register.ageofconan.com/trial/

    EQ2:www.everquest2.com/freeTrial.vm

Or if you want a buddy pass for AOC just PM me and I'll send 1 your way.

Don't defend MMO's just because they fail to be good enough.

No one is looking for a "perfect MMO" they're just looking for a really great MMO.

The kind that haven't come along since World of Warcraft.

A game with PvP and PvE without skimping on either. That's WoW. That was UO.

A game that is polished, user-friendly, and looks great AND runs great. That's WoW.

A game that's not too hard, and is void of time-sinks. That's modern MMO's. Time-Sinks slowly die as MMO's evolve.

A game that's not boring, not too easy, and is balanced with Crafting/Economy, Adventure/Exploration, and Combat/Action- well that's yet to come out all together, but different games bring in different pieces of those things.

It's rather simple, you don't even need to be creative. Do what WoW did. Take every successful part of gaming and combine it all together, throw out the trash, and slap your own label on it.

Get Fallen Earth's crafting (can craft almost EVERYTHING, harvest materials is fun, and economy is balanced by craftables taking a long time to craft (but craftable offline in a 20 queue) and npcs that buy/sell all raw mats at a set price to set price caps.

Get WoW's polish, PvP/PvE balance (they have plenty of content for BOTH, and BOTH are fun.), and performance (WoW's graphics are amazing, animations are fantastic, and the performance is AMAZING!)

Get Everquest (1&2) and Ultima Online's "sense of adventure" and "magic" in the environment and monsters.

Have two servers, one FFA full loot PvP and one normal (but with PvP zones or instanced PvP) which in essence provides two different games.

Take every other great part of every other great game. Combine. Keep it generic fantasy but add in a couple of unique and fun races/classes.

VIOLA! What people call the "perfect" MMO. It's not perfect, but it's what everyone really wants.

Some combination of real and fun Crafting/Economy, great performance/animation graphics, PvP & PvE, a sense of ADVENTURE and a reason to GROUP (straying away from Solo content, but STILL having solo-ability) and polish polish polish polish POLISH!

No video game does this though. Fallen Earth is boring except the crafting is AMAZING. WoW is amazing, but it's only one game and the PROPORTIONS of the amazing things are unique (LIke Cookie Recipe) so another mix of the ingredients makes an entirely different cookie, but still made from cookie dough in an entirely different shape.

Honestly, I'd be happy just with something thats polished and well done without additionally being "dumbed down." By which I mean avoiding interesting/complex systems because they feel it would be "too hard to understand for everyone so it shouldn't even be an option" which seems to be the case with many of the games today. They're too busy "playing safe" to try anything new. I can't blame them, as retention numbers are atrocious, but at the same time I can't help but wonder if they are precisely because they're playing too safe and overpromising before release.

Right now I just personally wish I could get some decent RvR. I love PvP, but I don't get any enjoyment from the mere act of PvP itself (hence why Eve doesn't really thrill me despite me liking just about everything else, I have no desire for isk nor do I find it fun just blowing people up for the sake of it) I get enjoyment from being able to contribute to a faction/guild and the resulting rewards to the group. Basically, PvP with goals. Unfortunately, DAoC,WAR,and AIon seem to be the only ones who have attempted it, and DAoC was the only one to really get it right to any real degree, and even still it would have been nice to see their system expanded upon (IE: Keep upgrading, territory control, etc). as the other big thing I've been looking for is a more dynamic game world. Something where you can run through an area one day, and your faction firmly has control over it, and the next day you log in and theres a bitter battle trying to hold the line from the opposing faction and outposts/resources available have changed. Problem is much of the MMO community likely wouldn't go for it, because they like being able to chart where everything is and what state its in at all times, and having that suddenly change on them causes them to fly into a frightened fury of message board hate.

Not really trying to blame the MMOs themselves, but I really haven't been feeling the last few sets of releases in the industry )=

You should focus on that thought alone and stick with it. I chose that course of action and I feel much better for it. You will be better off when you face up to the truth. Every MMO on the market is rubbish. They are all extremely low quality games that are designed to be massive and time consuming so that companies can rake in your cash. With MMOs quantity comes first. Quality comes second. Thats not to say that you cant get some enjoyment out of them because you can......its just extremely challenging thats all and its not really worth the effort in my opinion. The only way you are going to get any enjoyment out of any of the currently available MMOs is by lowering your own standards and expectations and putting up with really bad game design, stupid game mechanics, watered down "content" (aka lots of shitty stories in the form of text files) and dull boring gameplay. You're simply not gonna find the kind of game you want at the moment though.

You're looking for good well thought out PvP in a well designed MMO? Give up on it and stick with first person shooters and other games with online multiplayer features. There are very few MMOs which focus on PvP and the ones that do arent exactly well thought out. Surely you've noticed all the "Looking for a new MMO" threads that people keep starting? In all of them whenever they mention PvP or anything regarding players working with and against each other and being able to effect the gameworld, you will see the words EvE and Darkfall pop up over and over again......and then people will start listing all the same tired old MMOs that they have been referring people to for years. Have you tried EQ2? Oh AoC has PvP in it? WAR has brilliant PvP (yeah I've never understood that viewpoint either lol). How about Vanguard? Or they point you to old outdated games like DAoC or UO......because none of the newer games are actually any good. Fallen Earth is the new mediocre game that recently got dumped on the pile. Give it a go if you like......but you will rapidly find that it doesnt really offer anything new or interesting. Again its just another standard MMO which plays like a boring single player game with the option of teaming up with people to alleviate the monotony......but like all the other MMOs its ok......if you have low standards. Players have simply flocked to it because there hasnt been anything better on offer recently.

Games companies simply havent figured out how to make a decent MMO yet that takes proper advantage of the internet. Yeah yeah EvE is the only one blah blah blah.......Ultima Online did it a billion years ago yadda yadda yadda. You want a great game that allows people to work with and against each other in a persistent online world? Good luck with that.....because it doesnt exist......except in peoples imaginations. Yep so for now its Darkfall or EVE. You have 2 games to choose from lol.

Consider doing what I did. Ditch MMOs (for now) and play single player games......which is what most MMOs are trying to be anyway with their heavy focus on solo play. At least you get better quality games that way which are actually fun to play. I am still keeping an eye on future upcoming MMOs though. There might be a decent one that comes out some time soon that involves decent and meaningful player interactions. Ya never know miracles can happen. Maybe Mortal Online will be good......or perhaps Global Agenda? For now though you're just gonna have to wait like the rest of us and hope that games companies can ditch their single player game design mentality.

I get what you're saying.  I played SWG for years (when it was good), and it just doesn't get any better than that.  To me, those were the glory days.  Played WoW for a few years after that, but that's lost in flare now too.  Right now I'm pretty much sticking to Xbox Live games and f2p MMO's to keep me occupied, until something catches my eye in the MMO market.  Guess we'll see what happens.

Better double cross your fingers for Mortal. At the moment, the interface is absolutely horrible and needs a 2nd overhaul, and while their ideas are great, you can't even test half of the things because of how lacking the game is in its completion at the moment. This would be less of an issue if they weren't planning on releasing soon...

At the moment you're dropped into a town naked, aaaaand thats it. Took me a while just to figure out how to target and talk to NPCs (as apparently just clicking them is out of the question). Then money becomes an issue, as you are naked, and there doesn't seem to be anything around to punch to death to even get starter coin, and you can't harvest without tools. Clearly some people have figured it out as I saw one person come by on a horse once, but yeah, massively unfinished state and I don't know how they're going to get it up to snuff by when they want/need to release.

OP, try Mortal Online. No hand holding there. A game for grown up people. But if you can't stand bugs and not all feats in yet, then wait buying the game until some weeks after release.

The FPV melee and mounted combat is imo really good.

The beta have started (pre order and you can play it today). But you should clearly wait until after release. Keep an eye on it.

Well, you can expect the GUI to be improved more. They have a person on it now and it has been improved already a lot, the last 3 weeks and they will improve it more. So within 1 month it will be really good.
