MMO Gaming on a download limit?!?

SylvariSylvari Member Posts: 61

Hey peeps. Well basically I'm on a 40gb download limit and I'm looking for a decent MMO. However I'm not sure how patches, updates and gaming is going to affect my limit. Anyone have any idea how well a 40gb limit would do on an mmo and any ideas for an MMO to play? P2P is my main interest at the mo, or f2p if you reckon my limit is sufficient.

Look forward to your replies lol :)

Waiting for Guild Wars 2, SW:ToR and STO.
Currently playing Guild Wars, LoTRO).
Played WoW, GW, CO, DDO, RoM, WAR, LoTRO, Allods (Beta) + Tons more that aren't even worth mentioning!

I dont know MMO's that are 40gb. Maybe AoC.

Thats my monthly download limit from my ISP, I don't mean the client size. Sorry about that should've been clearer lol.

Doubt AoC would run either :( or at least not too well.

The largest data pile is going to be initial installation. After that, you could get by on practically any MMO with a mere 5gb/mo limit. I can't think of any where my 5gb aircard wasn't sufficient.

Now if you're dl'ing other baddies and not just gaming... that's on you.

That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

Cheers, well I don't download much, especially now I'm on a limit. Only use xbox live and hopefully an MMO. I was just worried mainly about the initial updates like you say and the usage whilst playing. Thanks for putting it into perspective a bit :)

Well first, your ISP sucks. I feel bad for gamers who live in the U.K.

Secondly, I'd recommend mmos with a box in stores so you avoid having to download the client.

As far as just playing, packet traffic is negligable for online games of any sort. You could play 24/7 and never hit close to even a gig.

Yeah thats probably the best idea. Got a few already just not sure which to use, obviously with the updates and stuff its gonna take a chunk outta my limit whenever I install one. Yes my ISP does suck, but just moved into a rural area and it was the best I could get for the money. Bummer eh?

Im curious as to your ISP. Ive heard of limited d/loads from   some satellite companies here in the states.

Yeah, the "bandwidth limit" bean counters have been active here in the U.S also. Comcast has a 250gb limit before you're considered an "excessive user". So far, AT&T has no limits at all though. Not sure about Verizon and some of the other smaller ISPs here though.

Yes those in rural areas with no choice seem to pay out the nose here and if memory serves its a satellite link.

I'm in the UK. So my provider is Sky. I was on unlimited before but obviously the area isn't as well provided for with internet and stuff.

Got some boxed games at the moment, mainly WoW, WAR and LOTRO anyone recommend which one to go for?

I would suggest Guild Wars, as they only download new content for the zone you are goign in, so if you are spending time in a few zones, you do not have to download the whole thing every time there is an update.  On the flip side though, they do seem to make changes frequently, with all of the holiday and special events. The other plus is it's free to play once you buy the initial game.  Plus now they have a promotion that gets you the Eye of the North expansion for free if you buy any campaign (They even have the trilogy pack that gets you Eye of the North)

They will all work. Consider EQ2 also.

Do you have a upload limit too?

The best game bandwidth wise that is worth the time is probably Guildwars, it only patches what you need at the moment and loads in small files as you zone. Have a look on it also.

Most definitely LotRO out of those three.

I do have experience of those 3, mainly WoW. But agreed I'm sick and tired of WoW. The one in my mind at the moment is LOTRO, although I've had a bad experience with the Click2Buy payment for it. (Being them charging me even though I cancelled my sub 2 weeks before). As far as WAR goes, you might be right its not really doing anything for the genre and its fan base is dwindling.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Can't keep up with you all lol. Guild Wars, is awesome indeed but at least for the moment I'm trying to think of a p2p game. However, failing that I think I may resort to GW again lol. Ta.

Think I'm gonna have a dabble in LOTRO again anyway. Anyone have any idea on the server populations for EU?
