They are not perfect by any means, but look at the AAA titles this year, are their problems any less? Respecs, content and cash shop in CO, grind and PvP issues in Aion.
We can only hope the MMO world takes note of DF and FE and this trend continues.

    QFE!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Fallen Earth yes. Darkfall no. Darkfall proves that if you totally abandon reason and spin your wheels in defiance of traditional development principles you are doomed to make a half-assed game that players won't stick with. Fallen Earth proves that you can do things your own way but you have to be realistic about the schedule and your funding.

The Triumphant Return of the Rodo Report should have been mention - oh well , I guess I can settle for a part 2 entry. Great article other then that.

Microsoft wants you to have  gold membership AND pay a monthly fee, and they want a piece of that monthly fee on top of the fact they're already getting your gold membership money and the devs are not seeing a dime of that. The devs all want them to require silver memberships and to give M$ a piece of the monthy fee. This is the definition of deadlock.

    CCP is making DUST 514:

they have not yet made any official announcements for which console it is going to be, except that it is going to be for consoles, but at the fanfest, where they were showing gameplay, they were playing on xboxes...

No they don't. Games that require a monthly fee on Xbox 360 don't require a Gold membership.

No they don't what? This is what I have been told off the record from three different companies who have MMOs ready to launch on XBL. It won't take you very long to figure out what those three games are.

What I meant is that Microsoft doesn't require a gold membership in order to play mmorpgs that have a monthly fee.

Currently there are two games on the Xbox 360 that require a monthly fee: Final Fantasy IX and Phantasy Star Universe. Neither of them require a gold membership to play.

RIght. Those are both properties with almost no market value. FFXII is particular was an experiment, and both titles were put on there before Microsoft really got the idea of online games, over 2 years ago. Right now, the reason we haven't seen any good AAA MMO titles is exactly what I said.

I think DFO could become great, but not as long as Aventurine develops it.

Good Read.  I look forward to the next addition.

FE's crafting is nothing like SWG, and nothing groundbreaking. Crafting, trading, resource gathering, economies,  is one area which MMO devs needs to start giving serious thought to, as there is a certain subset of players who only wish to do this sort of activity, and it very much supports and increases the pvp and pve base when done correctly. FEs does not do this.
