I've probably tried reading The Fellowship of the Ring 5 times.. and every time I stop at Tom Bombadil. The purpose of the thread is - do you all still think I'd get the most of the game even if I can't finish the trilogy? (The Hobbit was an exception. Brilliant)
Do any of you play without a big knowledge of the books and still enjoy it? (5+ months is what I'm talking about when I mean enjoy the game.)
Thanks
Edit- Forgot to mention I played the game briefly. About a 24 Hobbit Ranger. I'm in the lonelands (

It's a mixed bag. The better you know the lore, the more references you will catch, and the depth of the gameworld improves.
But you will also notice how horribly butchered the storyline is most of the time. Turbine really screws up the story, quite often.

Well, they're not THAT bad in screwing with the story. They push it and sometimes you just gotta shake your head, but it doesnt ruin the lotr experience in my opinion. Doesnt help it sometimes either though.
As far as needing to know the story, no, not to play the game. Yes, to get "lost" in the world as far as capturing the same feeling the the characters in the story may had felt. You wont be like, "now I understand why they didnt want to go there", but you can play the game and have fun still. If you know enough of the back story and history of the chars and places in middle earth, you may be ok for world immersion. Thats one of the great things about mmo's with IP's.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
Honestly, the pacing of the Fellowship of the Ring is pretty slow, I was just reading it again pretty quickly and then got to the House of Tom Bombadil and haven't read since I definitely like the Two Towers and Return of the King more, but as far as Lotro well I suppose if you've not gotten past Tom then you don't understand why some players may wish they could go up and give Harry Goatleaf (an NPC in Bree) a swift kick in the nuts. Seeing as the story line in Lotro hasn't advanced much further than Lothlorien all the quests are expanded from obscure references and a lot of history in the appendicies. It really just provides dramatic irony to the player because a person who has read the books knows the outcome of Sharkey's men etc.

Well if you made it to Tom Bombadil then you got thourgh the most boring part of the books atleast
I dont think you need to have read the books to enjoy LotrO but it adds alot of depth to your gameplay if you do. I know alot of people who are not very intersted in the books but enjoy the game and I also know some really hardcore Tolkien fans who love it too.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Thank you all for the replies
