Does level still consist of finding a spot in Dunes, having someone try to find a mob, pull it to the spot, and beat on it for 45 seconds?
SE has introduced some systems to make soloing easier than it was in the past but grouping and camping mobs is still the fastest way to level. They increased the amount of xp you get from EP and DC mobs and introduced a system called Fields of Valor. In FoV you get a quest to kill certain types of mobs, go kill them, and get extra xp for killing them when you turn in the quest. You can also earn gil and items for killing them. At higher levels you can do Campaign which is large group battles that gives decent xp. But it's not really that fruitful in terms of xp earned til level 60+.
The soloing systems are more aimed at allowing you to make progress when you can't find or don't have time for a group. Grouping for experience and getting missions and quests completed is still the focus of the game. If you only want to solo in an MMO then you should look elsewhere. FFXI is a grouping MMO not a PvP or solo MMO.
