Offline RPG's

GaraPGaraP Member Posts: 10

So, what i've been trying to search and found mostly nothing is this:

Are there any "sandbox" RPG's? For example - a Darkfall or MO but offline?

I know it's practically impossible to play a sandbox offline, so what i am trying to find is like an Oblivion, but with more "free-to-do-whatever-you-like" features. Being able to join a guild, and actually build some guild fortress, going at war against other rival guilds; being able to run a simple shop, like a merchant, or a blacksmith. A game with no "main quests" to follow, in order to unlock some stuff. There could, or should be quests, but only in the secondary plan, like to get some money, or whatever.

Oblivion had a lot of freedom, but in the end, all that you did was exploring dungeons or completing the main/secondary quests (I actually loved Oblivion, don't get me wrong).

I know I'm basically just day-dreaming, but since i'm not -that- informed, anyone knows if there is/it's being planned a game like this one?

Cheers

Try Mount & Blade (there's a demo available).

It's not really one of the traditional RPGs, you don't have a story and all, you're just thrown in a medieval setting (not fantasy, therefore no magic, elves orcs trolls and all tolkien related stuff), with kingdoms, vassals, and you can do whatever you want. You can make your own faction yourself if you like challenges, be a mercenary and serve factions solely for money, or be a vassal and try increasing your reputation inside the faction to gain more power.

Combat is awesome, real time style, with FPS arrow shooting, except it's fun, unlike Oblivion was to me.

Levels and skills are good too. The game uses a similar system to Oblivion to weapon masteries, the more you use them the more proficient you are with them, and there are skills and stats that raise according to levels but they won't make you godlike. Same for equipment, it got a realistic feel to it, you won't have a Sword of Awesomeness +7 that rapes everything with two hits (but it's very fun to one hit kill soldiers with a well timed attack from horseback). There's some thought into items, for example, the biggest shields can't be used on horseback, same for pikes and very strong crossbows, even if mounted combat still guarantees some ass kicking.

The sense of freedom is even bigger than in the Elder Scrolls series, really. The game got a low production value (it was made by 2 people so yeah) but the world feels dynamic, you have caravans running around going to towns that you can raid, deserters, thieves that you can kill, war parties that you can try to challenge yourself against. There are some random events that are fun, like visiting a village you can find bandits attacking it, and you can defend the villagers to gain more notoriety with them, and so on.

There are castles, and towns that you can siege, it's a bit simple but it's alright to me.

One of the bad things is the absence of multiplayer... However it's planned to be in the sequel. Still worth a try anyways, the demo is out there.

I've tried it already, and i enjoyed it.

But... there are some negative factors that, for -my- style of gaming, turn me off.

    - Although the RPG's i most prefer are the Medieval ones, I like them to have fantasy setting, like you said, dragons, elves/dwarves or some other races.

    - The game has a huge freedom of map traveling, but not quite freedom of doing what you want, i mean you basically need to do errands to feed your army and that's much of it.

What I really wanted is like an Oblivion with the freedom of not having to quest to enjoy the game, basically where you can just focus on a profession, roleplay a bit with the environment, or be in a guild and be a part of some wars. Basically a sandbox RPG.

But I guess this is impossible, for now :/

(Good suggestion with M&B, but i've already played it ^^)
