MMO ARPG?

I wonder how would this work.

Not only that the character development will end up being very interesting(In a fully 3D ARPG, character movement is a big deal, and you could customise the way it is...this adds an extra layer to the standard customisation), but the combat should be very enjoyable.

And fighting a mob would be pure fun(if the mob AI is good enough), not to mention, there's a very fun way to add hardcore dungeons and PvP will be pretty balanced. Imagine having to climb on a giant and try to pummel his eyes while you avoid his attacks.

Just an idea of mine...but I can see the picture of a huge siege where all actions are in real time and you can do things such as wallrunning, double jumping and climbing on the walls, using things such as Air Magic to exploit the movement even more.

What do you think?

Action RPG, with an extremely fast paced combat, similar to action games. Well, this would be the loose definition, but I'd take this to a new level: add elements from sandbox games such as Assasin's Creed, Prototype, etc.

At first I thought he was thinking Diablo type action role playing game but the giant thing is sorta like Prince of Persia? Don't know but it stand for Action Role Playing Game I believe.

Sounds like a good idea IMHO, have crazy drops Diablo style where stuff falls instead of a box, have like 5-15 minute timer for breakables to respawn ( breakable for instance vases and boxes..) at different locations so they can't be spawn macroed to death..

Always liked Action Role Playing games AND MMO's have been going downhill, I think it would be a good idea.

You could consider the Phantasy Star Online/Universe games as MMO Action RPGs, although both use instances extensively. The problem with a MMO ARPG is keeping track of too much positional/relational data to keep the experience smooth. The more objects in proximity, the more challenging it is to keep everything in order (it becomes almost an exponential calculation increase).

By instancing, they break up how much data and information needs to be coordinated into smaller chunks, which allows for a more consistent gameplay experience. Of course, it varies greatly based on the engine and where the data is primarily processed (client vs. server).

However, as hardware continues to get more powerful, and internet connections continue to become more robust, this issue will likely become less a concern over time. If you look at the new crop of MMOFPS games on their way out, they will likely be a good indication of how successful these games can be when they come out.

AoC was initially marketed as an "Online Action RPG."   however, the community was confused as to what that meant and the term was eventually dropped.  (see http://www.i-newswire.com/pr16335.html)

in this context, i believe it referred to a more twitch-based combat system.

Champions Online is the most action-oriented MMO I have played, and that's why I like it so much.  I agree that a controller (in this case Xbox 360 controller is perfect) is vastly preferred, but some of my friends seem to enjoy the game quite well with keyboard and mouse too.

    (1)  Most of the powers don't have recharge times.

    (2)  Endurance (Mana/Stamina) is always plentiful as all characters can build it up during battle.

    (3)   Blocking is a major game mechanic, and part of what makes this an action RPG is that even after someone executes an attack you can still block it before the projectile hits you.

    (4)  Similar to the previous, after someone executes an attack you can still avoid it by ducking behind cover / removing line of sight to the projectile.

    (5)  Travel powers are on during combat, and most attacks allow you to move while casting them.

    (6)  This game was designed from the beginning to be used well with an Xbox 360 controller, and the level of gamepad support blows away what I have found in other games or managed to setup with Joy2key.  The default setup is good, and the level of customizability is also quite good; my biggest criterion for my main MMO is ergonomics.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.
