I am pretty close to givng up on mmos

KingGatorKingGator Member UncommonPosts: 428

I am a computer game dork. My first MMO was Asheron's Call, and moved on to EQ when I got a computer that could run it, then I hit DAOC which was my favorite game until ToA came out and they ruined, after that I did WoW(motorcycles and robots drove me from that game) WAR sucked, and wasnt able to get into AoC, Vanguard is an awesome game, but no one plays so I had to leave, And finally I am beta testing allods now(Which I like but it doesn't seem to have that IT factor, along with the item shop thing turns me off.

So, after all that, I guess I am wondering what is the next, if any, AAA title that will have team pvp, a fantasy setting(with no robots or ray guns) and is actually being developed by a team that ha a chance to make it work?? I know what I want isnt trendy, everyone wants something "different" I don't really, I want something perfected that fits with my play style. Oh, and tried lotro, solo'd to 60, grouped like 5 times, got broing really fast. So, is anything coming out I might like? Or is it time for me to stick to single player rpgs? because if all mmos are online solofest, frankly single player games are usually better.

The only thing coming to mind so far is T.E.R.A. but that's a ways away.  Have you considered Aion?  It's a very polished AAA game.

It took the first people about 2 weeks after release to reach the cap.

It's nowhere near an endless grind. Yes it might sound crazy to you but some people actually like an mmorpg to last longer than the first free month.

Aion is a great game that's worthy of your attention.

It's as much of an endless grind as LOTRO or WoW or Vanguard. I don't find the inherent gameplay to be any different.

You want endless grind? Lineage 2, especially the earlier years. And i'm a huge fan of L2.

The combat pace in Aion is pretty much the same as any other mmorpg. If you find that combat to be boring, you're playing the wrong genre.

i actually played aion and i thought it was a pretty horrible game in comparison to other modern p2p mmos

it might be a decent f2p mmo though

The industry shouldn't have to adapt to the minority (you) because your not worth thier time (money) so I think you have two options.

    1. Find a game the best suits you. It's not going to be perfect but if you enjoy it then thats good.

    2. Stop gaming.

I'm sorry to say but it's simple as that. I hope you find a game that you like but it's extremely rare to find your dream. That game for me is Oblivion: TES and I'm still playing it and loving it.

    Best of luck to you.

I found myself in a very similar spot as the OP a couple of years ago so I went back to a game I hadn't played since before DAOC came out, Counter-Strike. At first it was just messing around because I was primarily a MMORPG player through and through, but once I gave FPS's a chance, they have proven exactly what I needed to take my mind off of orcs and elves. Every time a game I am playing gets stale or dies, I jump into a completely different genre of game and sooner or later I move back to MMOs. If you're getting to the point you might give up MMO's but still consider yourself a gamer at heart, try something completely different for a while. If your computer is good enough to play the latest AAA MMOs its good enough to play most other online games.

FPS's grew on me because they are centered around my favorite facet of MMO's; team play.

  • thamighty213thamighty213 Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

Aion is a good game until end level the PVP is crap nothing but a zerg I enjoy it but you mention team PVP.

Guild Wars 2 could be the game for you

Team PVP - Its the one thing GW is the best at

Team behind it - NCSoft but nameley Arenanet and GW2 fromdev to support was 2nd to none

    Fantasy setting

sadly I dont know much more on it as it would land the same time as the old Republic if you could stomach a change of scenery from fantasy to sci-fi nameley Star Wars then TOR could be worth a look also.

I'm throwing my final MMO egs into TOR very disilusioned with the genre we are going backwards not forwards.

I say look at DarkFall or Mortal Online. It's definitively different from 90% of the MMOs out there. Of course they are far from polished but these are your last choices.

Though both these games requires you to pay the box before you can try so I suggest, should you wish to try them, to look at as many videos as possible. Forget about reviews, most of them are out-dated (Like in the case of DarkFall were most reviews were written at Launch....which was, and everyone will agree, horrible).

    Wow....

I am in the exact same situation you are in as well. For the past few months, I have been dissappointed by MMOs in general. Champions Online was great before release, but now it's a burning pile of ash just waiting to die away. EQ2 was ok, but there wasn't enough PvP to keep me fully interested and the fact it's not one of the "recent" games. Tried Age of Conan for a few weeks. It was a blast until level 40 and then I realized "This is meant to be a PvP-centre MMO, yet I have not been able to do one siege or get into a scenario?" Aion is not ready for the West just yet. It still needs much care to be called a AAA game.

So, moving on, I have been playing many other Non-MMOs for the past 2 months. Team Fortress 2 always astounds to please me in times of need. Plenty of other shooters like Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2 for the Co-op mood. Mass Effect and Oblivion for single player, relaxation mode :) The game I have enjoyed the most out of any other game in a long time is League of Legends, the successor for the popular WC3 DotA mod.

While not as FPS centered as your selection, the point is still clear. Team-play is most important for MMOs, but some just don't have the charisma to hold that aspect up. Soloing can be fun as well, but what's the point if you are paying 15$ a month for a game you play by yourself? The only game I am actually looking forward to that could be called an MMO is Global Agenda (For obvious reasons I have stated above) Until then, I will enjoy myself and not waste time with an endless "grind fest" of today's current MMOs.

LOL was this for me? If so why even bother to post that. I wasn't asking someone to develope my perfect game. I was asking what games might be in developement I might like. Also, i would probably represent a large enough minority that we are financially significant.  So, your brilliant piece of advice in point 1, that's what I am doing now smart guy. The stupidity of your statement in point 1 is only outdone by the stupidity of point 2.

Basically, your post wasn't relevant to anything I asked, not did I complain about anything, so what was your point? That you're an internet tough guy, or one of those annoying preachy personality people? Seriously, piss off...................

    Best of luck to you.

For me the online game has only been as good as the people I play with. I took to playing World of Warcraft, though I think EQ2 is a better game I like the guild in WoW more.

I currently play Aion. Many ex-daoc players in the game seem to enjoy it a lot. If you can get over the metro-graphics (my characters look good though), then you will enjoy it. It's a pvp game. People who claim to love pvp, but really don't will dislike it. But for true pvpers, it's the best your gonna get at the moment. It's not for everyone though, so wait for a trial or watch some videos on it before you give it a try.

Better yet, take a break from MMOs and come back 2010. This thread was meant for players like you.
