Tempted to come back for 1vs1 PVP...

I quit WOW after the Outland expansion (I think that was the name of it), and went off to Warhammer when it came out. Warhammer has lost it's appeal to me though. You can only take and defend a keep so many times before it gets old. PVP is my main reason for playing MMOs. I like the thrill of going out in the world and having a 1vs1 fight with an emeny player. I don't care about dungeons or raids or elite gear, so I tend to play alts to about half way to the top level or so.

I was wondering how WOW was now days for 1vs1 fights? Do they happen often or are the encounters just gankfests with no chance to win, out in the open world? Would a PVP server still be the way to go. I don't even actually remember the mechanics of the PVP system (when you are flagged and all that).

I'm excited about the new expansion and the chance to play a Goblin Shaman and/ or a Dwarf Shaman. Do you think it would be worth while to start up again to get the feel of things before the expansion, and maybe get some gold set aside for the characters that I actually want to play, or just hold off until the expansion?

There isn't that much world PvP. While you're leveling 1-58 you'll probably find no one at all to kill. Once you hit Outlands at level 58, you'll find an increased amount of people, but these are mostly death knights who have a massive gear advantage over you because their starting gear is good. At 68 you can go into Northrend. You'll find a good bit of world PvP here. But once you hit max level, you won't find many people your level out there. You'll be stuck ganking lower levels until they call on their friends to come and corpse camp you for 4+ hours.

A lot of people enjoy dueling. You'll see lots of max level players sitting outside Orgrimmar (horde) and Ironforge (alliance).

Most of WoW's PvP is based around arenas though. 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 matches where you go up in ranking as you win more matches.
