Crafting in the new MMORPGs

Howdy,

While I enjoy PvP and PvE, what makes or breaks a game for me is the crafting system.  After playing SWG for the past year, I am looking forward to moving on to a new game.  While I see, and have read many of the "this game is better then that game" threads, I haven't found one that compares the crafting from one game to another.

What I’m looking for are some details on the crafting systems of some of the new and upcoming games.  I do think that the player’s skill in acquiring the correct items and resources, and that the time and effort that the player puts in should influence the crafting process.  I do not think that a “mule” crafter should be able to construct the same quality items as a RP crafter.  I want my crafter to be an active part of the community who has pride in his craft.

Thanks in advance for your input.

The Saga of Ryzom has a cool craft system,
You need to harvest materials from the ground or looting from mobs.
Each material has his own extra points (Damage, Speed)And for staff-crafting(Faster healing power,Range)
    Try it out!

I really love WOW crafting system. Its not only based on resources which need to be collected, but also on recipes. Of course, you get the basic set of recipes from npc crafting teachers, but the best recipes have to be bought randomly from merchants and of course from looting. What I really like about crafting in wow is that all items that you create have some use.. even the most crappy armor that you can make as a blacksmith is very good for low level chars, who dont have money to afford the high level equipment, but still want some better that the npc merchants sell. The other thing i like is how the tradesmen are connected together. You can have only 2 primary proffesions ( like mining and blacksmithing ) but some of the recipes require resources obtained by other proffesions. This supports trade among players. I am too lazy to write more, sorry ::::40::

    Dark and Light.

While one can probably have mule crafters at the low levels the game forces specialization above that into the four broad class areas of fighter, noble, explorer and crafter. (Since this game will have an extensive skill tree much customization is still possible within those broad classes).  Dark and Light is a very social game with PvP between the two alignments as the big motivator and unpredicted event creator. All items decay with use. It has a player based economy with player run shops (can hire NPCs to run it) and persistent town markets for natural resources. The crafting process is "like a fight" and crafters will need to group to make some the best items. Master crafters can sign their creations. Items will vary by quality and even item color can be selected.

I wouldn't reccomend Saga of Ryzom to a crafter unless you have a good sized guild behind you.

While the crafting in that game IS top notch you require people to funnel resources to you in order to get to a decent crafting level(Because you must grind away makeing hundreds of useless goods to level crafting) and you can't harvest resources at even 1/20th the rate that you can consum them crafting. All the good monster craft-drops are from uber-monsters that require a full group to kill....

I can hear you did not play the last periode of Closed Beta..
I could find hundreds of good materials with a high damage rate or speed.
The grind is not much, altough it will cost some time, but you'll get your reward for that.
Because many people will buy your stuff when your harvesting those good materials!
