Hey all,
I was just wondering how the skill system works in DF. I see people talking about skills/builds (they may have used a diff term). What I don't understand is, why do you need a certain "build" if you can just level up all the skills instead of just like archery/a magic/2h swords.
Is there some sort of talent system that I don't know about?
Thanks a lot!

You can take any combat skill and there is nearly a skill for every weapon.
example
Mellee
sword skill, axe skill, club skill, sithra etc...
then any 2 handed version of a weapon
knives skills (2handed weapon) greatsword skill, greataxe skill...
same for every special weapon skill
sword whirlwind, greatsword whirlwind, disabling blow etc..
other special like
Rage skill
in Archery
archery skill, disabling shot
In magic the skills are called schools
Lesser magic , greater magic ,4 elemantal schools etc...
and also a lot of passive skills.
You can buy and use any of it .
Now the specializations are build on top of that system
in magic certain single spells of a school can get upgrades like faster travel , bigger damage etc
in melee you get skills gives you more protections but you not allowed to use elemental school spells and high magic spells
same for archery , you get bonus on protection / damage in archery but not allowed to use the high magic schools.
not all melee/archery specializations force you to not use high magic schools.
and now comes the good part , if you don't like them you can reset them and get rid of the specializations.

You can be everything, but it takes a LOOONG time to be everything. Most people I know will set goals toward a 'build' once they get there I'm sure they'd move on and spread out. I did earth/fire, I have air/water, but I focus on fire and earth becase I don't have the time/resources to do all four at once.
That's one type of build, the developing one.
The other is just playstyle I think. You try to become what you want, if you're into winning, then you adjust what you want to be the most successful you can, but at least for me I want the core to still be the way I want to play.

Thanks for the insight guys! Sounds like fun.
I have another question. I took a look at the DF forums and every other thread I see people talking about "giving away secrets".
Now I'm not asking for anyone to give up secrets or anything, but do any of you know what exactly they mean? For instance someone said something about leveling a skill. A guy answered him and was like, "I don't give away secrets or anything, but blah blah"
Anyone know what they're talking about?
Don't know what you refer too, i just can imagine that because its a game of competition some don't like to help but not everyone is like that. Darkfall has no "secrets" AFAIK, but there are good spots for leveling different skills, for example brownies are very good for your rigor and ignore pain if that's considered "secret".

Expansion is quite new, and in case of AV you won't find 90% of changes in patch notes. It may be most effective way to level up spell chanting or information that foxes sometimes drop parts of infernal armor, or that trade routes quest sometimes gives you an astrolabe (oops I've given away some secrets :-))
One thing about builds:
Some skills and specializations work best with certain gear: Heavy armor makes your offensive spells useless, and makes archery a lot weaker, but it has high magic protections.
You are still a hybrid (melee / archer / mage) - but very strong emphasis on one style of combat. If guy in infernal armor will close the distance to melee range - mage in robe is already dead - because after expansion it takes 20 seconds to change from robe to heavy armor ...
I can think of a couple examples of 'secrets'.
Some mobs in the game are bugged naturally, and some can be bugged. What this means is that they can't attack you successfully, given that you don't do the the wrong thing. These mobs can be cast upon, non-lethally, skilling up magic skills. I've heard of one famous one called the salamanders that was fixed with the expansion.
Mobs give 3 times the experience over people, so if you cast on mobs then you level pretty fast. The two problems with mobs is that mobs usually hit back, and you either have to kill them or be killed, and they move so you have to take your time and aim a tiny bit. Bugged mobs fix those problems.
There's also a couple of mobs that hit softly, move slowly and are big and easy to hit. That could be another secret to skilling.

Where do you buy the new Rage skill from? I've checked a fighter in a non-capital city and couldnt find it.
On the list with the weapon skills like axe skills, sword skills etc..searvch for 'melee skils' and expand it.

Definition of secret in Darkfall: Any type of knowledge that allows a person or group to advance more efficiently than others.
A little threadjack: What are exactly the Racial traits now? Are they in the game already?
the racial stuff don't matter that much
Alfar - little bit more mana; +3.0 acid resistance
Dwarf - more dura on crafted gear and i forgot what else
Orks - some crazy berserk thing i dont know, greataxes hit better
Mirdain - more ID range
Mahirim - faster running speed
Human - bonus for nourishment (food)
it's not all that important..
Good info.
Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful
Thanks for the info.
