A lot of new MMORPGs are becoming less and less challenging in terms of PvE.
Take a look at WoW. How many times have they had to dumb down their content for their playerbase? My guild was in AQ40 when the newbs on our server were struggling/wiping on MC trash. Afterwards, Blizzard decided to dumb down all of their PvE content by reducing the amount of people required and the effort required. First 25 man, then 10 man. And the instances are substantially easier than they used to be.
If you look at EQ's PvE system, there would be very long encounters that required sustained effort. Where is that now in current MMORPGS? It's not there. Where is Seru, or Burrower, or Rallos Zek, etc. in these newer MMORPGS? There aren't even any encounters that are like that anymore. Most encounters take like 5 minutes tops, they've become pretty skill-less.
Also, the PvP system is these newer MMORPGs tend to be broken.
Look at WoW again, all of their PvP content tends to be thrown into instances. Want to PvP? Go into an instance.
It's not like you can have any PvP on your own server anymore. Why? because Blizzard decided to put all of their PVE content into INSTANCES. So that means that people no longer have any reason to fight with each other on their own servers. Why would people fight each other if they have their own copy of PvE content? That is the only thing people would fight each other over that is actually meaningful and people actually care about.
If you had an idiotic honor system, like in WoW, then people would just do what they did in early WoW. 50 vs 50s at Tarren Mills all day, and it would be boring and pointless.
It's just funny that these newer MMORPGs always have "incentives" for PvPing to hide the fact that they removed the only meaningful incentive for PVP : PVE Content.
Anyway, PvE and PvP need to co-exist. I don't think you can just instance them both and expect your game to have meaningful and fun PvE/PvP.
There simply isn't enough competition for PvE content because it is instanced, and there is no incentive to PvP other than meaningless honor/arena points which is boring and artificial. How about fighting another guild over control for a zone, so you can raid something? No bullshit rewards other than the ability to PvE.
EQ was pretty much the last MMORPG to have PvE and PvP integrated like this, and since then I've felt that the PvE/PvP systems in these games are just meaningless and boring.
In conclusion, WoW and newer MMORPGs tend to have dumbed down PvE content and fake PvP systems. The real sad thing is these pathetic companies don't even provide an "instance-free" server with no battlegrounds or arenas. I think their game might attract real PvE/PvP players with skill if they did something like that. But no, they cater to bad players(dumbed down PvE content) and carebears (instanced PvP system with no penalties)
