I am willing to play both gender character, but generally play the femlae characters, because the looks and animations are usually better. The biggest reason really is that in the mmos I have played the male characters are usually all huge and steroid filled people. I just don't want to play a guy like that, and would rather play something a bit more realistic to the average person. I may actually play a male character in The Secret World or Blade and Soul, it they are descent games when they come out. The males in those games just seem more normally proportioned.
I don't see what it matters. The people who roll characters of the opposite gender all have their own, and usually different reasons. It doesn't infer one thing or the other. Most MMOs we play are RPGs afterall, and the characters we play aren't meant to be direct projections of ourselves. Though it does seem however, that the people that have the biggest problem with other people playing characters of the opposite gender, are the ones that are least secure in their own sexuality.
I'm secure in my manhood, so are the others. You just made my point without realizing it. If you're secure in your manhood, you're going to play a male character. If you're insecure then you'd still be seeking your true self, thus...rolling a female.
Again, stop being Beta Males.
So secure you have to let everybody know right? : )

Being secure in your sexuality means you don't have to feel the need to reinforce it, because you don't worry about what you do as being associated with being masculine or feminine, you just are who you are.
So actually, it's the other way around, you just proved my point.
sooo you guys dont seem to understand why this topic seems to come up ALOT. See, personally when I make a toon in an mmo its basically ME in that virtual world, i guess you can call it immersion. So its kinda like how i would look like, be, do, in that world but you also interact with real people in the game. Thats the biggest difference with single-player games and mmos. I dont mind playing as lara croft, zoey or that crazy chick in heavenly sword but if in an mmo i have to create my own personal character i would like to be a guy. really i dont care if you wanna play a girl and ive seen some pretty good reason but dont say that lame excuse "i wanna stare at her ass." Thats actually the most loser excuse ive ever read...
I guess if this is more your speed, then you're entitled to your own choices. But I seriously doubt "this" is how you look. Enjoy gawking at your muscle rippled, handsome avatars.
You dont seem to understand...obviously you cant make your toon look exactly like you, then the game you win damn awards for crying out loud. The point was that it's "who" i am in this world, dosent have to look like me just has to be my interpretation of how i look in that world, at the least im a guy. All i got from your post was that your either calling me a homosexual or i like running around with a naked male toon...
If you check pubmed, you will find a few scientific studies have indicated that straight males who play female avatars in online environments have a tendency towards latent homosexuality. In fact the results were very similar to studies about straight males who like Coldplay. However, the early results from some follow on studies are now finding that many of male subjects roll their females toons when listening to Coldplay. It's not yet clear if this is causation or correlation.
Sorry, but that is bollocks. First, as a gay man, why should I want to play or see a female toon? I never made a single female toon, and in the MANY gay friendly guilds, 95% of gay players made MALE toons. When a man makes a female toon, he obviously does it because he like to see females. It is totally absurd to conclude a man who plays a female toon is latent homosexual.
There are two different things: your social genderization and your sexual preferrence. Those two have ZERO to do with each other. There are manly gays and effeminate straights. Those two things are not correlated at all. And what the heck has listening to coldplay to do with it?
Absurd.
I think this sums up it pretty good. A gay man's perspective on what gender gay men typically play from his experience.
Personally I think the popularity of this topic is symptomatic of heterosexual insecurity as opposed to homosexual insecurity. I think another reason it's popular is that gay bashing is no longer socially acceptable in the real world. So people retreat behind the anonymity of the internet to perpetuate their prejudice.
I usually play males, because, to be honest, I would rather play without a boner. Plus males usually look more intimidating. I mean no offense to women, but if the devs made females intimidating, I still wouldn't be inclined to roll a female. Third, it saves some confusion. I don't necessarily dislike males who roll females, but I would prefer if they rolled their actual gender just so I don't get caught calling a male a female. Perhaps I'm being a little passive-aggressive, but it's true. It doesn't piss me off, I just would like it better when males are males and females are females.

So when you see female avatars in game you get a boner? You need to get out more.

You mean you don't want to get caught cybering a male right? If you confused a male playing a female as a female then it's not exactly your fault, you wouldn't be embarrassed. You want forced gender matching move to china. Btw, I liked the female UD rogue in WoW better then the male, why? The flipping eviscerate is awesome.
Oh, and adding on to what I said earlier, do you know any actual gay friends/ acquaintances who play mmos? Listen, I mean no offense to anyone, but if you take a percentage of gays and how many of them play mmos, my guess it's around/less than 1%.
I'm sure they're out there, but I'm also sure they're pretty rare.
I had a few female toons but nothing like your reason. Some classes seem to be more fitting as females to me, this really depends on the gear appearance of the classes though.
We have a winner. My thinking is generally simple:
Tank class: Male
Caster: Female, unless its a Necro, then it can be male

Two I know, one Is a friend I know personally, he plays male. Another being from an old guild of mine, he played a male.
I play only female toons cause I like the look of the chick avatars in games. I would rather stare at a cute female toon all day thab a male.

If you check pubmed, you will find a few scientific studies have indicated that straight males who play female avatars in online environments have a tendency towards latent homosexuality. In fact the results were very similar to studies about straight males who like Coldplay.
I call BS. Every straight man in existence that played the original Tomb Raider has had a moment where he parked Lara in a corner for a better sideboob angle. This is directly related to femchars being more popular, as the vanity cam angles take advantage of much more.
The thing on Coldplay is spot-on though.
I agree with calling BS...
I have one question, what or who the hell is Coldplay?

It's funny, I play female characters sometimes, I have over 12gigs of music and not one Coldplay song.
I am female, and I've been playing male characters pretty much exclusively for the last few months. This is in part because my husband keeps playing girls, and the game we're currently playing has romance quests that require me to be male, but also more recently because I think my axe-wielding barbarian-type character is a lot more impressive as a big hulking guy (even though the female equivalent is still pretty athletic and I do like that model as well... just not as impressive).
The weirdest thing I have encountered while playing male characters is female characters throwing themselves at me, offering cyber, and trying to flirt for favors. Really, I have run into a lot more of that as a fake guy than I ever did as a real girl. I am, however, immune to their feminine wiles. After all, I have wiles of my own.

I do know some, but I will also admit that I probably have more gay friends than average, for a suburban housewife. XD
If you were gay, would you really tell anyone in your MMO? Considering the kind of things that get said in game, I think I'd keep my orientation to myself.
There always seems to be an underlying assumption that you're a young, straight, white male until proven otherwise, regardless of what sort of character you play.

Well I looked them up online, and the list of songs that I saw don't sound familiar, but that means nothing because a lot of artists have funky ass named songs, with lyrics that don't match the name.... So I may have heard their music, or again I may not have... Anyhow, what's 'gay' about them?

That's amazing. Quite frankly that is not even remotely true.
Oh sure there might be people who play female characters who have homosexual tendencies but I bet dollars to donuts that there are an equal amount of people who play characters of the same sex who also have homosexual tendencie.
I would probably guess that players who feel extremely uncomfortable playing an avatar of the opposite sex probably are a bit too worried about how others view them and their sexuality.
The newsflash to them would be "no one cares". The only person you have to please is yourself.
