do you think PS3 will update their GPU in near future?

TweFojuTweFoju Member UncommonPosts: 1,236

ok, so we know that the games that have been released so far isn;t even using 50% of the true PS3 power yet

and mostly are still on a 720 rather than 1080

but the Graphics market are heavily being updated since PS3 release back in 2006

and as we know, the PS3 is using the G70 Nvidia series which is quite outdated by now, and looks like Sony will not stop on their 250gb Slim, di you think in the "X" release ahead, Sony will use more updated graphics there are in the market or will still stick with the current GPU even if it's not being use on it's full perfomance yet?

as a console gamer, i hope that it does, because the only major difference between the PC gaming and PS3 now only stands on the Graphics

So What Now?

No, this happens every console generation.. they will not update the GPU. If they update the GPU it would fragment the market, some games would need the 'new' PS3 (might as well call it the PS4) and then it ruins the thing consoles have going for them, guaranteed compatibility.

Also they are able to keep cutting costs/size by using parts that get cheaper and easier to produce as time goes by, by the end of the PS3's life they may actually start making money off the hardware. Switching to a new GPU would raise costs and make PS4 less relevant.

I agree. This is funny when if I remember right, Sony was hyping this baby as being able to be technologically relevant for ten years. Plus aren't they still losing money on every unit sold?

no. It's competely pointless. They'll make the ps4 as another person said. And this time it won't have that god awful cell cpu. And if they did update teh gpu it wouldn't help. The reason why NO ONE has been able to use 100% of it's supposed power is b/c of that horrible cell cpu. No one likes it, and everyone hates it. So this next console will be great as it's going to not have it.

What needs to happen is that M$, Sony, and Nintendo need to release a new console next year. My xbox360's graphics just suck. As i'm playing through assassins' creed 2 i notice how pidgeon held they are in the graphics department. It looks identical to the first game. Not a single thing looks that much better. Sure i know what you're saying they could've just done this or that etc. etc. but the point still is the pc games are looking better and better whilst the console games are almost nonexistent in the graphics department.

This one reason why i never understood why blizzard never made that fabled wow for the 360. Their next mmo should be like ffxiv on ps3, 360, and pc. That way they can get all the money in the world as they're already known for subpar graphics and overcompensating with tons of particle effects

It is all one big game and gimmick, games rarely take advantage of a systems power.

I heard from so called experts that as early as next year both SOE and Microsoft are coming out with MOTION controllers for their systems,i don't know if it will be an add on or in the new models only.

As for the GPU i am not sure witch one they use,but i heard the PS3 has a ton of power,so there is no way they are going to do anything except maybe create some newer api's for future game development.

I think the reason console games are notorious for being extremely linear is to make it a simple build to eliminate problems like hitching and bandwidth lag.I have seen several games that should have been released on the PS2 that is how cheap they look. You also still get an average of 40 hours of game play from console games,so they really have advanced VERY little ,but cost you more money lol.

yeah i guess you are right, i remember when i bought the 1st gen PS3, that time it was like hell expensive, look at the price cut now

while i believe there will be PS4 not long from now, as they rumors are starting to raise in certain websites

i dont think PS3 will even last for more than 5 years from now, but i my disappointment on how Sony choose their graphics

and i still believe the reason why various company didn't want to make the game to the full 1080 is due to the graphic limitation although some said that its not entirely true, im not very good with these hardware stuffs anyway

i remember seeing in a random article that the RSX on the PS3 GPU makes it twice powerul than 6800 ultra or something

but i doubt it will hold much longer

the motion controls (like the WII has and speaking only for microsoft)will be an add on. I saw something on G4 i think that had a 10-15 minute speal about it. Looked pretty neat as it used entire body motion if i recall correctly.

as for updating GPU's why would they do that on an old system? if anything they would call it something new and charge more.

Funny how they were saying how powerful it would be and it's less powerful than the Ati in the 360.

really? because i thought that the CPU of PS3 are powerful enough that some US Air force division bought around 2000 unit of PS3 just to use their CPU for their super computer and one of the reason is because it's cheap, lol, though idk how powerful the CPU is, but i believe it's quite powerful

It is a cheap way to get 7 powerful Cell cores. Doesn't make them easy to use. It increases the development time and cost to figure out how to use 7 Cell cores in tandem, especially when you are developing for multiple platforms the others of which are much easier to program for.

It's much easier to use them for scientific purposes than gaming actually, super computers are made for parallel tasks, the part of games that is parallel is the graphics engine and the Cell processor cores proved to be terrible for graphics which is why they added the Nvidia GPU at the last minute (they originally intended the Cell processor to render the graphics)

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=758390 has a good description of the difficulties of using the Cell processor.

The Cell CPU is fairly amazing. It just requires a different line of thinking when programming for it. But most of the graphical power from the PS3 is still untapped but developers are getting closer all the time. I wouldn't doubt if the PS3 lasts well beyond the 5 year mark. We are just now starting to see games that are starting to work the PS3. This is still the early stage of game development in the consoles life. Developers are only now starting to get the hang of developing for the PS3.

Why would they need to, its technically more powerful that some desktops. Also, just like the PS2, we have yet to see what it can really do, as developers get more time, we should see even more amazing visuals com out, just like the PS2.

    hopefully yeah

reminds me of FFIX, many wouldnt believe that it was made for PS1, the graphic as good as FFIX never existed for PS1 games until FFIX shocked not only the SE fans, but the whole PS community, that said, even some games on PS2 are still not as good as FFIX's graphic

i hope the developers can hit the mark in no time, there are more and more games that will be released and it will just get better, and i hope that if  they ( the dev ) could start making the most out of PS3, they would start thinking about majoring the multi cross platform for MMOs like SE did

if this happens, i might consider quitting PC gaming for good XD

Next Playstation is probably going to be in 2012.  I think we will see a new XBox and Nintendo console soon.

I don't. There is simply no need.
