Does Final Fantasy XIV have anything special about it?

    Cheers.

It's the first multi-platform MMO to not only be on the PC, but PS3 (and possibly 360) as well.

Best graphics any MMO has showcased this year.

Music composed will be done by a man whose one of the most respected in the field world wide, Mr. Nobuo Uematsu.

Will have a unique storyline and setting that's not based on some other piece of work and destroy it (*cough*WoW*cough*).  The term "New World!" fits well here.

Feel of familiarty with some classic icons.  WARK!

No level system, but a skill and "growth" system.  No real specifics on this, but it's nice to budge away from the usual gain xp --> level --> repeat.

Combat also sounds interesting.  The more intriguing part of this is how the left and right hands can do different things.

And best of all?  Meeting other former FFXI players in a new MMO.  The only XI players I knew in WoW, AoC and WAR were the friends and LS mates I switched over with.  And they're the best online peeps I've ever met.

What do you mean by "It's the first multi-platform MMO to not only be on the PC, but PS3 (and possibly 360) as well." FFXI was in PC/PS2 and Xbox360.

I actually hope you DONT get into FFXIV beta as you would be taking the place of someone who really cares about the game and will actually enjoy and try to make the game better.

Who said I don't care about the game? I'm currently looking for a new game or two to play and I'd love to try out FFXIV and if I find it interesting I'd gladly do everything in my power to make it a better game. And another thing you're forgetting about is the fact that I'm sure that SE wants more than FFXI fanboys, people who will actually take a critical look at the game rather than going "OMG THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME!1!!! IT'S JUST LIKE FFXI <3333!". After all this along with one other MMORPG are the only games that I see hope in for the future.

    - No. There's FFXI too.

    - No. See TERA online.

    - This does excite me though since he's in my opinion the greatest video game music creator of all time.

    - I hope so too. I'm a huge fan of the FF series and I hope they can make something on a similarly epic scale.

    - Not too sure what this is supposed to mean, I only get the chocobo reference.

No level system, but a skill and "growth" system.  No real specifics on this, but it's nice to budge away from the usual gain xp --> level --> repeat.

     - I agree, that does sound interesting. But from what I've seen so far from videos everything seems very dull, hope I've just missed something.

He means do what the last 10 Final Fantasys have done. Rehash old terms/characters (Chocbos, Moogles, Eidolons, Cid ... etc) to create a common thread through all the games but putting them into new and different situations to keep everything familiar yet fresh.

to say its the best "looking game" is tottaly an opion no matter how many pixals are on screen. Its all about the style/art direction of each individual game. both games, to me, look fantastic, but of course in there own way.

also on the last part that is part of the game, its the community. FFXI is well known for its more positive community (mainly becuase you were forced to work with others, so ALOT more people were nice). Again this can be a good or bad thing, though it cant really be said as a thing that makes it different nessicarly.

i wouldnt exactly say that all of the FFXI fanboys are just going to love it, for the sake of it being like FFXI. I'm a huge fan of FFXI and of the FF series in general, and almost everyone i know that is a hardcore 11 fan have alot of skepticism about 14. Its hard to have fanboys in the MMO genre. People would rather see the game they have keep going since they are so attached to that world, the friends in it, all the stuff they achived, and gear they have earned, so if anything the FFXi players will be the ones who will be the most critcal (though i admit they will look for more of the similar things then your avarage joe)

and about you getting in the beta or not i can agree you really should not be one of the first (atleast until open beta) becuase it will not be for the people curious about the game, its for those who are seriously intrested (wich you obviously arent) to help with the all the bug testing (beta testing isnt usually doing what you want, but specific testing of certain aspects of the game)

Ah whoops, should've been more specific there. I meant the first MMO designed for current mainstream PC hardware and the current mainstream consoles, the PS3 and possibly 360. I'm basically saying it'll look pretty :p

I've taken a look at TERA. And it does look good. But it's not that much more impressive then Aions. And Aions is just touched up and elegant. That's why it looks good.  Also, we've gotten quite a few beta videos for TERA, and all we've gotten is a rough amateur camshot of short clips for XIV.  And those clips were done in Gamescom, where they said the graphics were roughly only halfway complete.  And it was still amazing.

The EU site also accidently released 3 new images before being taken down, but they're floating around out there.  2 of those 3 are obviously in game shots and damn, they look absolutely stunning.

By the wark, I meant what ic0n said exactly.  Having a little bit of essence from the series name just adds a bit of fun to it IMO.

My last point is a big one, even if you don't understand why.  FFXI wasn't known for it's stellar gameplay, or at the time beautiful graphics or even music.  It was the group play that led to the creation of very interactive communities.  The LS system was great becaues of this mindset.  Unlike the majority of other MMOs out there, you didn't have to stick with one.  I personally kept a pearlsack for my very casual LS and 1 pearl for the late night hardcore stuff.  It was just nice to play with other people to enjoy a game on the highest level yet be laid back.

Simple if you ever played any square enix game and/or final fantasy xi that's enough for those that enjoyed the games (many do) and look forward for another pve focused mmorpgs that si most likely to be another success.

So what was the killer point in the old FF mmo? Something had to be in the way to preventing it from being at the top. What makes anybody think, this time would be any diffrent?

Remember Mystic made DAoC, yet that didnt mean Warhammer would be a SMASHEER

I think you're failing to understand why certain people are so excited about FFXIV.  First off, your definition of whether FFXI was successful is flawed.  By ALL OBJECTIVE standards, it was one of the most successful MMO's of all time.  You may have hated it, but it doesn't change the objective facts.

What are these facts?  7 years and still going strong.  A consistent 500k subscriber based.  Name me some MMO's other than Wow than can attest to that.

For those of us that LOVED FFXI and were part of the 500k consistant subscriber base, we are aware of SquareEnix track record.  We know the "type" of games they create and they have rarely disappointed.  Speaking for myself, who's been an FF fan for 11 years and played FF's from 7 - 12, and X-2, I have been rarely disappointed.  It may not have been the greatest game, but each one was well worth the money.

There are very few companies with the track record of SE in producing an RPG and MMORPG (Blizzard being one, and Bioware with their RPG's being the other).

For those of us that LOVED FFXI with all its flaws (if you could call it that), you better believe we're looking forward to FFXIV.  We would want nothing more for FFXIV to be more like FFXI than WoW any day of the week.

And I hope you're not looking at just subscription numbers when deciding whether an mmo is "the best."  McDonalds is the biggest restaurant franchise in the world, and Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time.  Take that for what you will.

That doesnt mean anything. Havnt you people learn from EQ and EQ2?

Unless there is something majorly hyped about this game, I dont see growing much past its current fanbase. Even Guild Wars 2 seem more interesting so far then this game. And thats because there seem to be little info on the game other then fanbot hype. reminds me of Darkfall in closed Beta on these boards.

  • Hrayr2148Hrayr2148 Member Posts: 649

Nobody is saying this game will tople WoW.   Guess what, most die hard FFXI fans don't want to transplant the "WoW community" to FFXIV.  Having played FFXI for 3 years and Wow for 4 years, I can tell you there's a difference between night and day between the two communities.

Here's what FFXIV has going for it:

    Amazing graphics.

A loyal fan base that has withstood WoW.

New combat mechanics fundamentally different than the current MMO'S on the market.

The ability to be all Classes at any time, by simply switching which weapon you're using.

A deep, deep crafting/gathering system for those that only enjoy this part of an mmo.

Deep, deep story as evidenced by SE previous RPGs and FFXI (mmorpg).

No EXP, no LEVELS, your "level" determined by your skill in a certain weapon, Which defines your playstyle.

MMO across all platforms. (PC, PS3, and eventually Xbox 360).

Ability to play an MMO using a game controller.  (Played using mouse/keyboard until I discovered controller and never looked back).  Btw, any usb keyboard and mouse can be connected to PS3, so you can play using keyboard/mouse on PC or PS3 and vice versa.

(more you can find by yourself, if you did 5 minutes worth of a google search).

Because no one can't explain it, there is lil to no info on the game.  Majority of us including myself loved  FFXI and we expect it to be similar to that and that where most the hype is coming from.  This game can be a success or a big steamy pile of crap but no one will know til it releases but most of us believe it will be a success since we loved thier previous MMO.  That doesn't mean it will succeed that is just how we fill.  Go read some interviews from the producer and go over to the main site and read that info then you will know all the info that has been released.
