So Wicked, it's good.
Oh boy. Clanbree, I understand that you are in Europe so some of your choices may be limited, but your question is almost like asking "Hey I'm hungry, what should I eat?"
Your question will surely get a lot of very different responses on here. To help you get an answer, you need to specify what you like in a mmorpg. Do you like PvP? If so, limited PvP or free-for-all? Do you like tree-branching type classes and advancement or a skill based system?
Other then that just going off what I myself like, which may be completely different than what you like...
Dark Age of Camelot is a good solid game with a huge beautiful world that's fun to explore, PvP free for all available on the Mordred server, realm wars, and a huge player base. I don't think you can go wrong here for a good solid mmorpg.
Asheron's Call 1 would be my next choice. Older graphics as this game came out in 99 but is truly one of the best mmorpg's ever put out in my opinion. They also have a huge graphics overhaul and increased level limit etc coming out next spring.
Ultima Online is a lotta fun despite it's 1997 2D graphics. Play the 2D client if you try it and stay away from their 3D crap which is dark and murky and doesnt have near the clarity of it's older 2D client. (You'll have a 2D or 3D choice when installing) Skill based system and great world to explore.
Game's I'd personally stay away from: Lineage 2, Final Fantasy XI, Horizons, Asherons Call 2. All of these games have pretty graphics and good ideas, but just somehow are not a "complete game" and either are missing great game elements or a player base.. or both.
Obviously, EQ2 and WoW are getting a lot of attention and while not released here in the US yet, I will likely stay away from them myself due to their over-simplified, too stream-lined approach the developers have taken in each. I myself prefer a game where I have more control in how my character develops as in a skill based system like Asherons Call 1 or Ultima Online. Dark Age of Camelot allows quite a lot of flexibility and control over your characters advancement as well.
Games in the future that I am anxiously awaiting in order of my own personal level of anticipation: Dungeons & Dragons Online (from Vivendi and Turbine), Dark and Light, and Middle Earth Online.
I hope that this helps. Good luck and have fun in which ever game you choose to live in

this will be my first paying monthly mmorpg
played d2 up to a month ago then found rubies of eventide
that was quite good now want to play something with a bit better graphics
not really intrested in pvp
like soloing and teams killing monsters and doing quests
was waiting for wow but not untill feb 2005 (thats date ive heard)
like the look of eq2 but will this be too hard 4 a newbie like me
Go for Everquest 2 hands down for the long term and serious-minded RPG player as it is the most innovated game out there ATM.
WoW is a quick fun game and really easy to play. It can get really addicting at first but after a while its gets really boring. You will get the max level in no time if you are a die hard player. If you play slow you will get more out of it. However there is really nothing new in this EQ-Clone. Also the graphics are stylish and cartoonish, so that might through you off but it runs smooth on a older computer that probably will not be able to handle EQ2.
So it really comes down to "Can my computer handle the intense graphics engine of EQ2?" If so its a no-brainer go for EQ2. If it cant then go for WoW, its fun to play to hold you off for a bit. If you are into PvP, then that can increase your fun til the balancing of PvP classes happens and "powerful" classes get nerfed. It happens in all PvP games, no skill players whine and the Devs nerf the crap out of some classes to dumb down the game so everyone can have fun.
Good luck.
If you heard EQ2 is going to be good then why not buy it.
I live in europe and going EQ2 as i found it just as good as WoW and see no reason to wait 3 months when there is a game equally as good coming out next wekk
If i am bored with EQ2 by the time WoW comes out i buy WoW.
So your problem solved buy EQ2 .
And EQ2 is as simple as WoW for a newbie to mmorpg.Nowadays, companies focus a lot on making mmorpg newbie friendly not to drive away potential clients.
So its very easy to get into.
