Star Wars: The Old Republic: Tatooine Revealed!

Tatooine has been revealed as the next planet to join Star Wars: The Old Republic's well rounded roster of planets, though I'm sure no one is surprised by the fact the land of twin suns will be making an appearance in the game.

Below is the official description of Tatooine as it appears on the planet's HoloNet entry:

Desert Wasteland at the End of the Galaxy

Far in the Outer Rim, the sands of Tatooine bake beneath the glare of two bright suns. Small pockets of barely civilized communities dot the desolate landscape, surrounded by the endless expanse of barren dunes and rocky canyons that have silently slain so many of those who ventured out into desert. Among the small shantytowns and settlements that persist, travelers may find shelter from the brutal climate, but trust is as rare as water on this lawless world. Visitors and locals alike must constantly watch their backs in Tatooine’s townships.

For centuries, Tatooine was of little interest to the rest of the galaxy – until the Czerka Corporation showed up five hundred years ago, seeking to exploit the natural resources they believed were beneath Tatooine’s surface. Czerka’s efforts to mine Tatooine ended in failure, but the planet’s hostile environment proved to be the perfect place for Czerka’s Secret Weapons division. Able to operate with no restrictions, Czerka brought alien technologies and experiments too horrible or dangerous to be allowed on any other system in the galaxy. While the full scope of how far Czerka went with their research remains unknown, it’s clear that suddenly, and without warning, Czerka completely pulled out of Tatooine, leaving their Secret Weapons complex to be swallowed by the sands.

The former Czerka outpost of Anchorhead has now become a lawless haven for smugglers, pirates and anyone else who wants to drop off the radar. Though Anchorhead often serves as a pit stop for Republic starships in the Outer Rim, the Republic has no official presence. Unbeknownst to the Republic however, the Imperial military has established a presence on Tatooine, to explore the old Czerka labs. The Empire has garrisoned a small force in the town of Mos Ila where industrious Jawa had restored a spaceport hoping to encourage trade, only to see their hard work taken over by Imperial troops who drove the Jawa back into the desert. This puts the Imperials only a short distance from the main community at Anchorhead.

Between the two, a terrible secret sleeps in the sand.

Aw...No Czerka? I was hoping to do bounty missions for them again! Just like old times! I wonder if they'll have swoop races...Here's hoping!

Check out Tatooine at the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website here.

Also, be sure to check out our Star Wars: The Old Republic gallery for a few new shots of the planet.

Like I said in my thread, there is a video tab, seems plenty people don't know this.

Oh, and I called it :D

I  have a feeling next planet will be Dantooine.

How cool is that? Somehow desert worlds always were fascinating for me. I loved Tatooine in SWG, and I am more than glad to have it in SWTOR.

Guess too that the next planet is Dantooine. ;)

Aww how I loved the purple flower fields there. ^^

:D same here. It's my favourite SW planet. Can't wait to see the depth in detail of the whole planet.

(hopefully a better job than SWG)

I will be 3rd to agree with Dantooine being an awesome planet.  This was the only place I would use for player city/housing. I didn't really like SoEs vision of it, hopefully BioWare can do better.

The game is getting sweeter by the moment. It looks great. If I recall wasn't Tatooine home of Luke Skywalker ?

By far my most favorite place in the galaxy.  Yes I loved tatooine.  I spent many of an hour in Bestine in swg. I also helped found a city called Asheron out near the great pit of the Sarlac and served as mayor for a year.   Remembering the good old days before the first CU.

I cant wait for this,  I by far loved this planet.

this game, part from the name, will be nothing like SWG, why would you think that?

Star Wars always seems to have a tech-atmosphere that advances as you go *backwards* in time. I wonder if it's at all intentional, or just a side-effect of doing the storyline backwards to begin with, but 'A New Hope' was the setting I felt most comfortable with - then the later movies take place decades prior to the first and look like tech has improved greatly. Then in the KotOR series, which takes place 10k years before that is far more advanced than anything ahead of it. Kinda miss the simplistic styles of the first movies, and would settle for any explanation as to why the past isn't more "junk tech" looking at this point.

This latest addition to the holonet proves to me that TOR will be the best MMO ever to sub to. There is more content in this game than you can shake a stick at. +1000 rep to Bioware.

    God I hate SOE.

You have to look at where the original movies take place at in the Star Wars universe. The most technologically advanced locale that the original movies ever travel to is Cloud City, Bespin (Where Lando is first introduced).  But, beyond that, the original movies are following the tale of a band of Rebels and rebels typically have to avoid any largely populated locations. And as we all know, largely populated locations are the hubs of technology, industry and education as well. Sidenote: Coruscant existed in the later days of the Original Trilogy and was supposed to be featured in Return of the Jedi, but was later cut because of... you guessed it.... technology reasons.

The prequels and KOTOR (Which is only, yes only, 4,000 years before A New Hope) mainly center their stories in the larger populated locations and although I do believe that the game designers are taking the technology TOO FAR... this is a simple explanation for your tech question. (Things like portable laser shields that you can erect in front of your character are not 'Star Warsy')

I love the original movies, I miss video games being based on them as I believe they were the best video games that Star Wars has churned out.

Tatooine is a no-brainer of course... And the worlds in SW:TOR look gorgeous. Sadly, I wish the character models did too. Its going to be such an un-immersive thing wandering around these beautiful locales....... looking like Buzz Lightyear.

SW:TOR characters. they look like Buzz Lightyear.

Anyone wanna go to Toshe Station with me? I gotta pick up some power converters. Oh, and I promised I'd give this old man a ride, but I can only take him as far as Anchorhead.

They added the most iconic planet in all of Star Wars lore and now you're convinced?  WTF?  I'm excited about the game but seriously, get a grip.

While I'm sure the changes in technology over time had a lot to do with it, I always justified it as the galaxy seems to of gone into a Dark Age of its own when the Empire gained control. Freedom was limited, oppression ran rampant, slavery, etc etc. The age of the Republic allowed for freedom, freedom to invent, to be prosperous, to set yourself towards a goal of achievement. To me that would play heavily into how the galaxy would look. In the later generations its more about just surviving rather than achieving a utopia.

really stoked about this game.....just wondering how big all these planets are gonna be. i find it hard to believe that they are gonna have 100% of every planet in the game. i mean coruscant alone would be a bitch to make the entire planet. i guess we will see but my guess is each planet will have limited areas to visit with expansions giving more areas to explore of these planets. either way games gonna be badass

I'm going to be the Devil's Advocate here and say that I wish they would have not chosen Tatooine as one of the planets for SW:TOR because it feels overused to me. I can see how it plays into the previous SWG and all the movies, but it feels like they are adding it to SW:TOR just because it is "iconic", I wonder how much actual significance it has to anything relating to the timeline of SW:TOR. That being said I am not going to saying "Tatooine sucks, BOOOOO Tatooine" or anything because I am not against having Tatooine in the game, I just think they could have added any other planet instead hehe. I'm still gonna play the hell outta this game and I'll even go to Tatooine hehe. To be honest I didn't really expect Tatooine to be a planet that would have been included in SW:TOR's lineup.

I bet the planets will be very big and you will probably need your own customizable speeder to travel across. Hmmm! :D

Well they don't need everything of a planet, but I hope big enough to allow some prolongued exploration.

Ill agree to that it seems like an odd choice of planet for this time frame as I dont think it servers and tactical advantage for either side. That being said, with places like Mos Eisley, it does open up a lot of quest options for Bounty Hunters and Smugglers.

    They'll screw up the technology.

They'll screw up the character graphics.

But Bioware still wants a "star warsy" feeling, and one of the ways to do that that requires the LEAST amount of brain power is.... Tatooine.
