Hi all, I'm trying to decide between these two games to try out. Can anyone help guide me on the key differences in each game? Could someone also touch on non-combat activities in both games and how PVP is handled?
Hi milky, its been years since i played LOTRO so i cant give you a comparison that you asked for, but if your looking for an mmo thats different from the fantasy setting and that you can actually level by crafting alone eg (22,000 xp for building a vehicle). That has a small but excellent community( very rare these days) FE is for you. I only played it cause i was sick of mmo's and thought what the hell ill try it. Best thing i ever did. Currently they have trial running so give it a go, nothing to lose. Also everyone is on the one server so always people on to do stuff with. Bit off topic but hope it helps.
Excelent gameplay, awesome and immersive atmosphere...trhilling storyline and quest in general, mature community, scalable epic battles, crafting actually works for something (i mean i'm at end game and geared with crafted stuff), the dungeons/instances are just beautifully done, landscapes are breathtaking.....
Well i can go on and on and on and yes...on, and no i'm not kidding just get the thing running in max detail (dx10 or dx9, ther's some difference between both modes, but if your card is not dx10 capable you still have the opportunity to enjoy beatifull graphics when turning everythign to max settings).
I must say that lotro is one of the best polished mmos out there today, it's just a jewel of the genre, try it out you won't regret it. Just choose the server accordigly with your needs, stop by lotro's forums and ask wich server should you join given your needs.
Oh i forgot, PvP=PvMP, i really don't see a thing wrong in this method of implementing PvP, you go to a contested area and figth for control point against felthy orcs, ther's has been quite a lot of epic struggles, the best part you can go to the forums for the specific server of the battle and find a lot of people involved discussing and teasing with one faction or another, for me that's as good as pvp gets, it's when iand where i want it to happen.
LOTRO has gotten so much better with this latest addition to the game. They've revamped the quests in the lower end so it makes more sense, revamped their mount system and made it easier to use, added skirmishes and so much more. Plus the community is very helpful, I have not gotten a single L2P type response when asking a question yet, though occasionally someone will assume you don't know how to use it and tell you the answer is in the search function but that is about as ignorant or elitest you will find on their forums. I don't know too much about LOTRO's PvP system because i haven't tried it yet but I do know that it is not world PvP. There is a zone to play in and you can either be a monster or free person. I'm pretty sure there is a free trial available but not positive, I've got a lifer account.
I don't know anything about FE but I highly suggest you play the trial for LOTRO, I think you'll like it.
I played LOTRO for a couple of years and I must say that it's one of the best MMMO's out there. I've tried Fallen Earth and it seems pretty solid though it is still young and needs some polishing.
I haven't played FE that much but it seems, because of the game setting, that there is very little variation in the environment. It's primarily desert as it is set in the Grand Canyon. Someone correct me if there is more to it. LOTRO is a huge world with a vast number of different areas to explore. It's also very rich in culture, given it's based on Tolkien's world.
I suppose it depends on what you look for in an MMO. If your more about PvE and exploration then give LOTRO a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed. FE has a refreshing setting being that it's post-apocolyptic. A much needed change to the genre.
I think, graphically, LOTRO gets the edge as well, depending on your hardware and settings. Of cousre, this is all subjective.
My suggestion is that you give them both a try. They both have free trials. That way you can see, first hand, what you prefer.
Lotro has beautiful graphics and great lore, the combat and animations are much improved with a recent download, however combat is way to easy , it is almost impossible to get killed which takes away from the suspense, quests are the usual with the added lore which adds spice.
FE starts out great for the first hour and goes downhill from there, clunky combat, and poor graphics ( exc ept for the first hour) it is lacking polish and everything costs alot of money, it needs about a year of patches
I was going to buy FE but as a crafter I thought the crafting system too easy. Almost everyone would have a crafting alt to make ammo and fuel. Being able to make cool items isn't much fun if nobody wants them.
LOTRO has good graphics, but the world is very very immersion breaking
Example: I left Archet to go to Combe, as soon as I left the Archet gates, there was a broken down wagon and the NPCs said something about how they won't make it to Combe
Problem? Combe is literally a 5 second jog from Archet gate...so the NPCs by the wagon, can't walk 5 seconds to Combe?
The world is not scaled well at all, in fact...LOTRO has the most horribly scaled world I've seen in a MMO. No, I don't expect it to be EVE big, or Vanguard big...but at least World of Warcraft's world was scaled more or less correctly.
I've played both and to be honest I'd chose Fallen Earth over LotRO any day.
While LotRO has great graphics it's really hard to play through more than once. The game is incredibly linear, but it can't be blamed for that, due to the fact that its based around a story. I hear that they're kind of branching off from the store after MoM, but to be honest, I'm not sure I like that either. I played it for a good long time, I was in the closed & open beta and it was good for a bit, but it got repetitive, money is hard to make unless you farm ore constantly and the housing is lacking. PvP is not something I delved into in the game because I wasn't a fan of the way it was presented. Monster play simply isn't my thing.
Fallen Earth, being that its new has a lot to offer even in this stage, and they are constantly adding to it. There are already plans for pets & housing as well, probably due out in mid 2010. The great thing about the fact that it's run by a smallish company is that they're constantly listening to their players. While some may believe this is a bad idea, so far I've yet to see much bad come of it. They seem to be implementing ideas very well.
PvP is pretty fun. It is in designated areas within the three sectors (a fourth is due our early next year, from what I gather) but apparently its pretty prevalent in sectors 2 & 3.
The crafting system in my opinion, while good & fun, needs work. We need item decay put into the game along with perhaps 'specialization', so that people become more unique, but overall its a lot of fun.
Unlike LotRO who's world is very linear, Fallen Earth is incredibly, incredibly large. It takes quite some time to get from point A to point B and there is absolutely no form of fast travel to speak of as yet (though it is in talks, but it will not be like other games versions of fast travel).
As for PVE which is my favorite thing to discuss, there are, from what I understand 5,500 different missions to do. There are 6 factions to choose from, each have their own strengths and weaknesses, allies and enemies, and as such have their own sets of missions. Missions grant experience, items, money and AP points. AP points are what you put into your character to build them a certain way. The only unfortunate part of the AP points is the fact that there of course is a limited amount and currently no form of respec, so you have to plan, very carefully, your characters future.
Anyhow, if you have any further questions regarding FE I'd be glad to try and answer them. I hope I touched on enough to get you at least interested in the trial.

I would say that Lotro is lin ier because it is following a story line and kind of has to be linier . My recomendation would be to try Vanguard and start on the island of trial on seradon server where there at least a few people pllaying
I'd agree with some of the above posters saying I would personally go with fallen earth, as I found LOTRO somewhat boring, although I played it on launch only. My favorite part about LOTRO was the you could play music with various instruments you found throughout the game. Apart from that the game was well put together, but I just couldn't get into it... I wasn't much of a LOTR fan though.
Fallen Earth is a great game. It does have some pitfalls for those that aren't willing to give it an honest try. A good example would be that the links splinki posted? If you were to play, its almost a necessity to check out globaltechatlas. The gameplay is fun in a sort of hybridized FPSMMO sort of way, and although it could use some tightening up on the hit detection in some areas, it has a tremendous amount of content.
Try them both, as FE definitely isn't for everyone as it takes more dedication then a game like LOTRO, but they are both very good in their own right.

Personally from what I can tell, Vanguard's future is pretty much... done. They're apparently not going to put out any new content, so its kind of... caput. Shame too, because that game is a great game.
And yes LotRO is linear because its following a storyline, which... unfortunately renders it a one-time play.

As a big fan and current subber of LotRO I'll tell you... if PvP is one of your major concerns, you'll probably be best off with Fallen Earth. PvP in LotRO doesn't get alot of love. I just wasn't designed with PvP in mind.
Both games are amazingly good games, they just cater to a slightly different audience.
Lotro has a very good crafting system and a wonderful high lvl item system where you lvl up and design your own gear. It also have quite a big gameworld by now where it would take 3-4 hours to walk from one end to the other and its beautiful!
Lotro is also an extremely traditional thempark MMO, the classes are solid but only allow very limited variations between players so a hunter is a hunter is a hunter. Combat is the old fashioned point and click and then activate abilities after each other and it strictly follow the holy trinity in the group content.
So if you like good stories, a lot of roleplaying, a mature community and a very laid back carebare style of game then Lotro is the answer.
Fallen Earth has some similarities with Lotro, its has also a very mature and great community, it has a very very good crafting system and the world is HUGE, somewhere around 1500 square km in the current limited part of the map, and the whole of the map is 7700 square km.
But fallen earth has no classes, you design your own character from the ground up, you buy your stats, they give caps on skills and you buy up skills within those cap, mutations and crafts are also skills, mutations are like daoc spell lines where you gain new powers the higher you buy up your skill. Craft skill are raised by crafting and dont cost points to increase but they are still limited by the stat caps that you do have to spend points on.
Fallen Earth combat is also first person shooter style, and its very clear that the engine has been written with PvP in mind because combat is much smoother and accurate in PvP than it is in PvE. PvP zones are FFA so watch that blue on blue fire and dont fire AoE like handgrenades if friends are near your target.
I still subscribe to both games but I find myself playing FE most of the time simply because its more exiting to me, but Lotro still have more of an emotional impact while you play than FE has.

lord of the ring will get dx11 in first quater of 2010 so my sugestion is to go for lord of the ring if you get dx11!
