. In other words, be the asshats the Internet allows you to be, and see if devs don't give you less of a say in how these games turn out.
How does one expect a subscriber to react when those under the same ublrella as the mockery of a mmorpg that champions online is, and just reskins that same grind-fest pve bore-fest and adds a ship to call it star trek online?
Aside from Darkfall as it ihas been able to limp along to its current state, and Aion with their broad bredth and depth of combined and integrated pvevp content, 2009 was a losing year in terms of mmorpg entertainment value, and the asshats are probably the developers for being so damn out of touch with a market that asking for something more.
But look what happens when someone gives them more. Darkfall is limping by and it was touted as the best pvp adventure game ever. Yet pvp'rs are quitting it by the droves. Look at Conan. A new battle system, Lets give them what they want, something different. We see how they are going along. The problem is people don't know what they want. All they know is they are bored and burnt out. And who are you to say CO is bad? You may not like it, but there are others that do. Then you claim that STO is the exact same game as CO yet, forgive me if I am wrong, STO isn't out yet. And you certainly can't tell me that watching the videos that have come out or the pictures that are out there makes it look anything like CO because it doesn't. What was wrong with Aion? It was a perfectly fine game. Great graphics, combat system was fun, flight was unique, and it is one of the only PVP games out there that actually has a purpose for pvp. However, it was a grindfest, especially when you got around 30 and up. But so it every single MMO out there. It is what they are. So why don't you just classify all MMO's out there the same and forget about them and go to a different genre, it really sounds like your just burnt out.
From my understanding, Darkfall is kinda like STO's Klingons. The actually content is pretty poor and it expected pvp to hold up the entire game. That just doesn't work in practice. As for Age of Conan, yes it has some very interesting elements, but it also has had some major flaws in design it has to deal with (last I checked). So yeah, bad games do badly. Big surprise.
Make no mistake STO is clearly a rushed product (the dev-admitted reason for the lack of Klingon content among other things) and judging by all other rushed products in the video game industry and MMOs in particular, it will not be doing that well. Expect people to quit in droves in the first few months. The fact that it is "Star Trek" might allow it to survive in some form, but it is going to suffer a great deal. CO was very similar and by all reports people also quit that quite enthusiastically for lack of balance, content, etc. Yes, it is still limping along, but there's no sign it is doing that well and it could quite possibly fold in the next 6 months as best I see it. I'd say in a number of ways CO and STO are similar. Both rushed, both are content light (STO could be called this for the mere state of the Klingon Empire, but there are other reasons to add to this). Both play well on a superficial level, but I doubt STO is any more balanced than CO -- judging from the previews leveling takes so long in STO that there's no way they can adequately test and balance the higher-end ships or pvp and that's a pretty big problem.
It is a fact that almost any game, no matter how bad, will have fans. You could say the same thing about anything bad from food to movies to furniture. That doesn't make a bad product good, it just means some people, quite frankly, have no taste and will put up with anything.

Sadly most of this seems like wishful thinking and speculation. It seems to me kinda like when the angry internet bloggers rage on about how "bad" a movie is before it comes out, despite having never seen it.
Some people just seem to have an agenda against a game because it's not exactly the way they think it should be, despite the fact that they're not a game developer themselves, nor have they actually played the game.

Sadly, and this is only 1 mans opinion so please remain seated. This IP is way to big to be overlayed on top of the champions engine and gift wrapped for the gaming community. The IP is on the same scale if not bigger that SW:TOR its a huge universe with many defined races, galaxies, worlds, politics and cultures for you to explore and flying around shooting photons is going to get real boring real fast. Just imagine every Star Trek Episode and movie consisted of ....FIre all Phasers!!! Cloak! Boom!! Warp speed!!! Credits.
Well I for one am very excited about the game and I wasn't even following it closely (this is a relative term btw - I'm an MMO news junky so my closely and your closely are probably vastly different) a month ago.
For those that are now disappointed I would suggest moving on, it really is too late in the dev cycle for your complaints to be acted on any time soon. Check back in about 6 months.
Will I become a lifetime subscriber? Probably not, but hard to tell until I've played for a while.
We're looking at buying the deluxe download edition - at 60 bucks it's a deal, and I personally will enjoy it a heck of a lot more than I did Dragon Age. (Side note - I'm really looking forward to a world without dragons, elves, dwarves and would really appreciate it if I never had to equip a leather item).
Things that excite me about what I've read recently:
1. No player controlled bridges - As a guild leader of a guild with headstrong people I could just imagine the fights over whos ship we used as they'd be the captain.
2. Away missions able to be paused - I have enough trouble controlling myself in games, was worried initially that I'd go nuts trying to tell my away team what to do in a certain amount of time.
3. Customizations - I like all the different levels - ships, equipment, bridge officers, and your own skill trees it looks to me like this is going to add a ton of depth.
4. Slower paced space battles - I mentioned I have toruble controlling myself in games - you really want to stay far away from me in space - never could play tie fighter or any of the twitch based games.
5. Klingons - yay they made it into the game, I was guessing a few months ago that they wouldn't make it in at all.

To lead. No different than any MMO. Once again. Most of us aren't suggesting player crews be forced on anyone. It should be an option. 2. BFD. They were promised. Throw Cryptic a cookie for gimping them at release.

Hmmmm... Having been on the front lines of the the super fabulous Sho Kusugi ninja b***hslap to your exisiting customer base that was the NGE I'd have to disagree that Cryptic hasn't gotten that far down the road of repugnant. SOE is still firmly entrenched in the #1 position of the Captain "F" You club founded by Judas (accepting new members for just 30 pieces of silver).
+10 internet points for the Sho Kosugi reference.
Yeah SOE is on a different level of fail from companies like Cryptic and Funcom.
