Despite being in alpha and really seeing the design team miss the point, I was so desperate for Champions to come good i made the purchase......what a waste of potential.... and money.... and time =/ Fortunately I didnt repeat that mistake with Aion but it is equally unworthy of existence. For me 2009 will go down as a year of zero imagination and minimal effort free year as far as mmo's go, we lost one of the more original titles in Matrix Online and only gained more generic excretia to fill the void....lets hope that SWToR, DCUO, APB don't lose their nerve and go for the bare minimum - surely there is some room for imagination and origniality in the genre...somewhere...hmmm?
yep we are in the era of copy and paste and have been for a while.
game dev are scared to lose money(and its understandable with so many bad choice made by game designer
ubisoft montreal made lot of good game in the past 5 years but good luck convincing them to make an mmo
be it rpg or other, they know that market has been burned by wow,and it wont go up soon.from the look of things
I have enjoyed most mmos I have played from ragnarok, CoH, wow, CO. I know there are some people upset, but I am having a lot of fun with CO, has been improving little by little. I am a casual mmogamer so I don't need as much mmofood as others, nice community and nice gameplay if it is your thing.
Well, done with the comercial. The only game I paid I couldn't get into was RF Online, maybe I didn't have the right mindset for the game. I have tried unsuccesfully many f2p in the past no really anything there either.
Aion was my biggest waste of money, I played beta and really liked the game and regretfully only made it to level 19 in beta. I decided to buy the CE + 2 months subscription. I quit a week or two into the second month after I hit level 39.
Next biggest waste of money was fallen earth but I only paid for the game so it wasn't as big of a waste as Aion. But geez i'll never understand how people like fallen earth, I felt like I was playing a ps2 or even a ps1 game.
The year of 09 is like this for me. The first half of the year I spent playing WAR.. Which I actually enjoy and think of as a decent fun game. my only gripe when I left was that every class in the game had crowd control and the constant lockdown fest that RVR and PVP was at the time wasnt really fun. I have heard they have fixed that to some degree though.
I waited like many others for Aion, played thru the beta some. Bought the game and played it up untill November. While I enjoyed the game. I decided after one of my best gaming friends had to take a break for real life issues he was having. That I would go back to Age of Conan which is a game i never truly got to explore back shortly after it came out.
Currently I am still in Age of Conan and it enjoying it greatly even more so than the previous 2 games (Aion and WAR).. I see myself here for quite sometim and even bought the year long account with all the bonuses it came with including the expansion.
If anything for me the biggest letdown is all the game hopping that is happening during 2009. The Last game I stayed with for any length of time was Vanguard. I played it for 2 years, and enjoyed it immensely. I am hoping Age of Conan can keep me.. Only problem, is that Guild Wars 2 is on the Horizon. And there were so many really cool aspects to GuildWars 1 that if they can bring to a fully open MMO world correctly I might end up leaving AoC. If not. i will stay with AoC for some time.
I bought the thing only because I wanted to see what kind of game this company could make, and get a sense of what kind of game Star Trek Online would be.
As a huge fan of Star Trek, I am afraid.
Champions was a shallow game, the only feature of the game I could say was good, was character creation. The game itself was very boring. I suppose if I was ten years old instead of 35, I would have appreciated it more.
Well since I only bought Aion this year I suppose Aion is the worst buy.... Also the best.
I got to 35, and 28 on two characters then the game started crashing at char select. It just wasn't worth the effort or trying to get it fixed. I played WAR for a month again last spring too. Was alright, wasn't worth two months though. Everyone knows the problems with it no need going into it.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
Darkfall, because i think i spent less than 2 hours in game, dying, rezzing, dying, all whilst looking at the piss poor graphics. Aion, i tried to like this game, just no. I mean the game was an absolute joke, non stop muumuu killing quests, LIKE FUCK I WANT TO KEEP KILLING THEM OVER AND OVER... Quests were very dry and boring, nothing to maintain my interest.
A game i did discover this year however was Wurm Online, which kicks the stuffing out of the former two mentioned. Its graphics are admittably, terrible, but its a game you -must- try to see the true polar opposite of most MMORPGs
hahha lol...care bear got what he should get...good job...
I'd have to say Fallen Earth, for numerous reasons.
It's a themepark MMO trying to be a sandbox MMO. The main way to level is to quest, but quests quickly run out in the higher zones, leaving you to grind at a snails pace to advance. In addition, you're essentially forced through strings of quests for "bonus" skill points, which you gimp your character by 25-30% of their total skill points if you don't do them, so the whole 'play how you want' idea that should exist for a sandbox MMO, is non-existent... unless you want a gimped character.
The whole 'you can craft anything' premise is also a bit of a joke, because if you build your character to craft you can literally fill out any crafting line, so there's virtually no market for crafted items. Crafting is also ridiculously boring since most of it consists of simply waiting around for something to build. What's that, it will continue to craft when I log off? Oh yay, I get to play the waiting for a timer to countdown game. If I actually want to do something while crafting, the timer gets longer because my character isn't parked in the appropriate crafting area. Wonderful design right there.
And then mutations... which is a fancy word for magic in the FE universe. The game was marketed as not being the same old fantasy MMO, but the way mutations in the game were designed, it might as well be called magic. The only difference is that the gamma (mana) bar is green instead of blue, and the stamina bar takes the blue color.
I tried so hard to enjoy this game, as I've been waiting for a post-apoc MMO for some time. But after two months, I was just bored out of my mind with this one.
I followed that game religiously for over 5 years, when I finally made it into beta the excitement wore off quickly.
- The world was indeed huge, but it was depressingly empty.
- Mobs were so few and far between that we thought they simply weren't fully turned on. Unfortunately, the spawns were intended to be sparse.
- Combat was a glorified clickfest.
- The skill system had nowhere near as many skills as promised.
- The "soft cap" doesn't seem to exist at all. Everyone is a tank mage archer.
- Crafting is a boring useless affair unless you have an entire guild supplying you. Even then farming mobs (when you finally found a spawn) for gear was still better.
- Mounts were WAY too expensive and fragile.
- Towns felt lifeless. Buildings are just decoration. You can't enter them. Tesla towers are retarded.
- Being red isn't an impediment, unlike UO. Zero accountability for ones actions.
On and on. I could probably write an essay about all the problems this game has. Needless to say, seeing all the bugs, problems, missing promised features and complete lack of content I didn't bother subscribing to retail. There were so many exploits at the end of beta that I expected retail to be unbalanced by cheaters within a week.
The game was kind of fun, but Aventurine built up my expectations FAR too high over those 5 years. The way they fed us tidbits of info allowed the community to build Darkfall up in their heads to be something it could never be. After beta ended, my interest in MMOs waned greatly.
Darkfall taught me a lesson. I had already learned in years passed not to get hyped up about an MMO. Now I know that following an MMO and learning everything there is to be known about it before it releases can only cause more harm than good.
I would have to say Fallen Earth. Its lackluster environment, combat and immersion wins it hands down for me. As long as Darkfall does not have a trial for potential new players it will be high on the list.
(AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH tires of firing plungers at praire chickens for target practice.)
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
I need my money back. I would have gotten more enjoyment if I used a $50 bill as toilet paper, at least that would have made me laugh for a split second.
FE
Yeah...... great game with tons of potential. The devs need more direction, it just seems they don't know where they want to go with the game. Plus, how are you going to have a carebear Post-Apoc game?
1) Darkfall. It was my only purchase this year and I regret that impulsive buy, though it was fun at first. 2) Aion. Thankful I open beta'd the game, otherwise it would easily be number one. One of the worst P2P games I've ever experienced. 3) Champions. Again, beta saved me more money, though it was much better than Aion. 4) Fallen Earth. The piss-poor fps combat kept me from getting into the trial and enjoying the game, otherwise it's not too bad.
What a sad year of releases, though I'm still not sure it tops 08's crapfest.
I need my money back. I would have gotten more enjoyment if I used a $50 bill as toilet paper, at least that would have made me laugh for a split second.
Hasn't WAR been going for <$40 all of this year? The only time I remember it being the full price was the first few months after release, then it steadily reduced in price. The lowest I saw was $20, though I admit it's been a while since I've checked the pricing.
If you spent $50 on WAR THIS year, you got ripped off worse than us pre-order fools.
This year is a SAD Year for MMO. There are lots of potential MMOs all failed.
I had stated my Worst Buy already, so here is other things I like to share for me:
Bad Buy (not Worst):
1.) Fallen Earth - I played for the first month and finally I can't take it anymore. I was soo expected that is another SWG pre-cu but end up is a bad graphic, sandbox trying to-be MMO game. =(
2.) Warhammer Online - I got a friend who got a Euro version and so I went to buy it, but I can't last 1 week. Their graphic and character model is lacking, PvP has no excitment, and I can't play with my friend at the end that spoiled the last fun for me in WAR.
So-So Buy:
1.) Aion - One Word, Boring -.- Although I LOVE their ARTS and DESIGNS !! Gotta give kudos for their graphic designers. Again can't live after 1 month.
2.) Darkfall Online + 6 months subscription deal - To be honest, I don't wan to judge this game yet since I didn't go deep into the game yet, however the impression for DF online to me was learning curve steep. I had good time at newbie level, but the game offered toooooo little help in UI and in game, so often in the starting level I already get lost what to do. Anyway though but I still consider a good buy coz this game did gave me some excitment while some high levels hunting you down =p. *However please improve graphics asap.
Good Buy:
1.) LOTRO Siege of Mirkwood + 6 months subscription - I love this game a lot in PvE aspect, and the 6 months deal I think is awesome coz it included SoM
The only game I bought this year was Aion and I wish I didn't. I tried the trial or free weekends of CO and FE and I can't see spending 20-40 dollars on either of those two. At least I spent less money then 08 when i bought WAR, AOC, Vanguard (though that was cheap as dirt) and lord of the rings.

i bought a few games this year, and all of them fell flat on their face
from worst to least worst:
1) Darkfall
2) CO
3) FE
4) Aion

Only game that was not cut and paste this year was Darkfall and Fallen Earth.
The rest where boring tab target games, Allot of crap tbh, hope the game developers take note on crappy games like WAR, Aion ect.
Not to release half assed games.
Playing Darkfall EU1 Server
Aion was my biggest waste of money, I played beta and really liked the game and regretfully only made it to level 19 in beta. I decided to buy the CE + 2 months subscription. I quit a week or two into the second month after I hit level 39.

Ok?
Technically.... I bought it like December 2008, but I was out of the country Jan -> Dec 2008.... sooo... 2008 doesn't really exist to me.

Few monthes ago Id say Darkfall, buts devs seem to be changing the game for better.
On the other side, Fallen Earth is the best buy
This year is a SAD Year for MMO. There are lots of potential MMOs all failed.

For me, it's Darkfall without question. Just a terrible game, with an even worse community.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Darkfall for me (my opinion, ok?). Still needs a lot of polish. I am not a fan of the UI/Chat and the community is really bad.
Darkfall was certainly the worst game I played this year. That community is even worse than the game as supising as it sounds.
Worst Buy this year? Champions Online without a question.
Worst MMO year for me. Darkfail and Aion the tower of balls....i want my money back..
Let's hope 2010 brings us some better games.
