Buying your way into closed beta

Am i the only one who has followed this game through 2 developers and been singed up for closed beta since second it was posted who feels betrayed. I know at least 6 lifers from CO who have beta invites they have no intention of using and they cant share with those of us who would. Then to top it off contest to get in. Meanwhile people who CARE and would give an arm to be in beta get shafted and stuck in COs crappy event listening to there friends who don't even plan to buy game let alone care enough to report bugs playing STO.

You know, I honestly sympathize with you. It can be really hard when you care so much about a game to not get picked for the closed beta. Especially when anyone who bought the 6-month or lifetime subscription got in and possibly doesn't use their invite. I certainly see how it could feel like people just bought their way in. Personally when I bought my lifetime sub to CO, I was just thinking about how much fun I was having with CO. Unfortunately, this is kinda the way the industry has worked for a while now. You have various contests and special offers and stuff like that which all sorta amounts to what people could say is buying your way in. Magazines that offer beta codes, fileplanet offering codes to their subscribers, etc.

Perhaps it might help to think about where that money went. For the lifetime subs, that money went to Cryptic and undoubtedly gave them a bit more wiggle room with how much they could spend on STO, taking the pressure off from the publisher and all that as well.

I wish there was something I could do to help you out, and if I figure something out I'll let you know. I know it can definately suck from that position (I didn't get into the WoW beta until pretty late on, and only then cause a friend gave me his account because the game made him get carsick, lol). If it helps any, remember that open beta is only a few short weeks away. When you do play it, they will have had those extra 3 weeks to finish polishing the game some more, and you can help them with the really hard to find bugs etc.

Just hold on a little longer.

I dont see a problem with the CO lifetime folks getting into the beta even if they dont use it. Simply because that was an incentive to purchase it. Actually, everything you said really means nothing and here is why.

You have followed this game through two developers. You want to play this game more than anything and you want to be in beta more than anything. Your chances of winning the lottery in your state is probably better than your chances of getting into your favorite games beta. Thats just usually the way it ends up. There seems to be no pattern as to how these devs pick their beta testers other than perhaps off of their main forums and to be honest, I think its wrong, because I am betting that many of them are not playing it to actually beta test, rather they are playing it because it is free to play. Just watch as every nda is lifted from a game and see the sheer number of people start complaining that they wouldn't pay to play whatever game it is their testing and that they need to be testing for at least another 6 months or more. Happens almost every single time. A lot of these people simply want to play it for free and do not have a desire to help the game progress unless it means they get more free time playing.

This is why I'm completely against allowing people to test it for free. You get what you pay for.

    Oh, the irony is delicious.

You'd give an arm to be in the beta, but you wouldn't pay the $100 to get in?

FYI, I did pay the $100, because I actually did care about how this game turned out, and I wanted to help out with it. Even at my own expense. A lot of people have followed this game since it was first announced by PE 5 years ago. Don't think for a second that you're somehow special because of that. You may say you feel betrayed, but Cryptic has zero obligation to let you (or anybody else) into their beta, so the betrayal is completely in your own mind and has no basis in reality. Quite honestly, from the tone of your post, it seems more like you're just whining about not being able to play the game yet than that you're interested in actually testing.

i still prefer the old school closed beta where its all in house with paid testers that actually play test and find and fix errors, i doubt more then 1 in 100 closed beta public testers actually do anything other then play a game in its early form then get on forums and bitch about it being a broken piece of crap instead of actually beta testing it.  open beta is meant to be a near release state of the game where you need to get tons of people playing to test server loads and find annoying things the closed sweeps missed and get feedback on balance and fun issues of your target market.  complaining that people bought their way into a faulty closed beta system is just pointless either way, if yould really wanted in you coulda went with a 6 month champ sub for less then the price of a crappy prosthetic arm, let alone a real arm.
