I'm hoping that STO turns out to be a decent game, but I'm not counting on it. I'm not spending any money on it until I get to try it out for myself first. People's gaming tastes can vary widely, so while I might not be interested in a game others may love it. Thus I use reviews as a guild for things to try a beta/demo/trial of, but don't commit to buy until I know its going to be worth it.
I tried to CO beta and lost interest after a couple of days. It just didn't compare to COH/COV which I enjoyed in beta, but was already getting repeditive by release (so I didn't buy).
I was one of the original designers for PACESETTERS: CHILL way back (PnP) so when I saw that pic of a possible horror game I was intrigued. I enjoyed CoH/CoV but got bored by the locked in requirements for grouping and the limiting "roles" that were placed on the characters (Tank/Wiz etc..). CHAMPIONS was a game that I really looked forward to and I pre-ordered and played in open beta and Headstart. The lauch was a shock and frustrating since they had to slow down leveling to keep people in the game. I was disappointed about the number of 'zones' in which to play. Thought they would surprise us with a new Zone or two at launch. Not! Anyway love the genre and the character customization was the best ever. Became an altaholic worse than I was in CoH.
Champions has also made casual exploring and solo patrolling a total waste of anything but admiring artwork. The experience for killing bad guys is almost nonexistant. Loot has little meaning. Finally quests are the ONLY way to level. I still like the game and Cryptic is seemingly adding stuff as fast as they can. Events are primarily loaded for high end characters and PvP stuff so start up and low levels are pretty much on the short end of the stick. I still like the game tho and will continue playing....although whether to stay for a long period (I have played WOW with my friends for almost 3 years) is at this time about 50/50. By the way I am retired, not a kid. I was a designer for TSR as well so am well game based although not in MMORPG except as a player.
STO is a game I am looking forward to very much as I have a certificate from the original show's first fanclub appointing me as a flight deck office on the USS ENTERPRISE NCC-1701. It is signed by Gene Rodenberry and James T. Kirk (Bill Shatner). Prized possession! In STO I can finally get a promotion to Lt. and command my own ship!!! I know, it took a long time for me to get promoted but hey, get a life!
My complaints about CO above were simply comments from a game designer but more importantly, a player. I hope that STO will learn from CO and reduce some of the frustration of CO's launch. I will add one suggestion to Cryptic (for what it is worth) PLEASE put a manual in your game (I am pre-ordering the game) so we will know HOW to do something. Wouldn't hurt to tell us What are the things we can do. I have spent too much time working thru the forums and typying requests to other players trying to find out the most basic information in CO. In game info is sketchy or non-existant so help us out with STO, please.
Also in reference to a horror game one of the most fascinating IP's and RPG tabletop games I ever saw (and ran for a while) was a game called "DEADLANDS". Mechanics were too complicated for playing tabletop but the imagination and creativity of the IP was as good as I have ever seen and is blatently waiting for an MMO. (No I have no connection with whoever owns the IP, don't even know which company did it - just was impressed with the IP). The horror/sci-fi/steampunk/western combo was handled better than anything I have ever seen. Certainly fit the concept of Multi-player.
Enough from an old man. Looking forward to an STO success and future releases ('specially a horror game) from Cryptic. Better for all gamers if they are a gaming and financial success. G. Spiegle

I will be voting with my cash, as in they are not getting it until I see a game that don't suck.
