Congrats to Turbine, LOTRO is a solid game.
Aion for best game though? Best of the worst more like.
Yet I still don't know anyone who would look even once at their games.
"As an added incentive, purchasing Siege of Mirkwood also includes all previous expansions and content updates."
Nice, I didn't know that Mirkwood also includes Mines of Moria. I thought both have to be purchased separately or in a bundle.
Not sure about mirkwood but if you bought mines of moria you got the basic game with it too.
I'd be shocked that Aion won if it wasn't for the fact that WAR won the X play game of the year last year. I'm just going to have to agree to disagree with them.
Dem hibbies! Dey be wrong!
damn, what is it about Lotro that turns me off? Ive tried so many times to play that game, picked the collectible in-game items when I could and even own moria. I keep a 3 month sub going just because its such a great value at basically $10 a month and for the life of me I cant get into the game.
maybe all the races seem too human for me? Not dark enough?
at any rate, grats to turbine. Very well deserved as they have a great product with LotRO. The game has quite a following, I just wish I "got it".

The fact that TenTon does not have a Darkfall section immediately tells me that anything coming from these guys can be taken as a grain of salt.
Maybe it's just not your style.:)
heh.. I guess im just fighting that fact because it feels like im missing out.

Darkfall players generally recognize that theirs is a niche game (hell, they fervently embrace being different), but get their nose out of joint when they also don't get included with the big boys of the industry. Darkfall is important to its players, but isn't much more than an insignificant blip in the MMO space.
Ten Ton Hammer doesn't have a section for every little pissant MMO out there. That's part of being niche.
Gratz to Turbine for posting two wins, and to Aion for MMO of 2009.

This "insignificant blip" as you call it, sports some of the best features of any MMORPG, all combined into one game.
"worst community", "hackers heaven" and "grief fest" hardly are the best features of any MMORPG

That's your opinion. For a supposed sandbox, it's still really weak, and has a relatively tiny playerbase. It has a long way to go.
I am glad you are enjoying it, however.

Lol.
When are you mmorpgers going to understand that the "community" issue is with the Internet, not just with any particular mmo title (those days are long gone). You see there is no accountability online, and that is why a certain percentage of people act the way they do. You know like the tough guy/gal locked in their 3000 pound vehicle who suddenly now has a set of balls and mouths off to you in a way he/she never would face to face. Only it's much worse with the Internet.
Considering what AV has done with Darkfall since release, they more than deserve to be on that list. Aion? CO? I played both of them and I'm honestly shocked that games like these can get this kind of recognition. It really gives a good indication as to how bad this genre is actually getting. It's a shame.
Good for LOTRO though, that game deserves WOW numbers IMO.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
Both pointless awards. What was their competition for 2009? really? There was none. The award goes to turbine by default. DDO also is not originally a f2p game and as such shouldnt be counted as a new release, even then it still has a subscription model.
lol at Dragon Age winning the best roleplaying award.

Exactly, the only reason Turbine wins anything is because there is next to nothing else out there. The same thing that happens in 2007 when Lotro won mmo of the year because nothing else was good or even out at that time. Aion gets an award only because there was nothing else good to play in 2009. Another disappointment in 2009. No worries though, real mmos are on the way in the form of The Old Republic, FFXIV and Guild Wars 2.
Isn't that why they won?
Nothing else was good or worth it and these games were so no shit they would win, what's you guys point?
EDIT: Sorry, rereading it seems like im pissed but im not, your guys logic as to why they won just doesn't make sense. It's like saying 100 bad games were released and one of them was good, so well yeah it IS going to win.

I have very little faith that the old republic will worth playing, at least for me. Guild Wars 2 however looks to have some promise as well as FF.
Because 2009 was so great it is going to be coined "Year of the MMO".
"worst community", "hackers heaven" and "grief fest" hardly are the best features of any MMORPG
I'm curious where you got these quotes from..
I just started playing Darkfall a month or so ago, and I've found the community overall pretty refreshing. Lots of folks willing to help, and the chat is a whole lot better than anything i've played in awhile.. Yea, theres some beauties out there, but find me a game that doesn't have them.
Hackers heaven.. honestly, i haven't been around long enough to see if its there or not. I'm sure there is some, theres been some in every MMO i've played since '95
Grief fest.. Ive spent a good amount of time the last month gathering to get a decent bank . In that time on the US server, i've been killed about a half a dozen times... honestly, for an open pvp game, thats not bad at all. I was expecting a whole lot more.. I am however, smart enough not to stand in the middle of the most common areas to mine. I'm not entirely sure what your definition of griefing is, but as i'm sure you're aware, this is an open pvp game, you will get killed if you're not careful, or prepared.
Best RPG: Dragon Age: Origins?
Great, guys...
Because 2009 was so great it is going to be coined "Year of the MMO".
The same will be said of 2010, 2011, 2012, etc, in the same sarcastic tone, as each MMO released will be torn apart by groups of people.
The current definition of "epic fail" (god, I hate that term) is "a game that some people like, and some people don't". Games are either great, or they suck, depending on your viewpoint. There's rarely a middle ground, or a case of a game being "good, but it's just not for me" from many MMO gamers these days. And the "old school" guys are usually the worst about this.
Are there bad games, or games with empirically provable problems? Sure there are. But they are a much greater minority than the ones that are considered failures based on personal taste.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
I guess it's just personal opinion whether you agree or not. Games aren't bad just because you say they are. (Edit: So take my opinion with a grain of salt)
As for the awards I agree. However, 09 has been a tough year for MMOs. If you think about, Mirkwood was really the only expansion for a major MMO. And it's no surprise that DDO got F2P, considering DDO was originally made for P2P. As for Aion and Champions online those are really the bulk of the major MMOs to come out this year.
And since roleplaying is nearly dead in MMOs, Tenton Hammer had to go outside the genre to get a good game for RPing.
2009, the year of mediocrity in my opinion. I'm not saying they're bad games, I'm just not saying they're incredible games. It's like when you win 3rd place and you get a nice shiny bronze medal, but there's only 3 people competing.
This statement is false.

It's interesting how some might have a hard time looking at an overall picture rather than focus on themselves and their own opinions. I agree with Darkfall, probably great for a handful of players but not for most just like EVE. No one said Darkfall was unsuccessful or anything, it's just in its current state not any cause for any major hype. BTW, watched a PvP video of two raids going at it against each other, I was pretty unimpressed by watching it. The ships were the greatest part of it, but the actual combat was mediocre at best. Obviously, this is just taking into account for combat, but again shows how much waves this game isn't producing for the most part (in the big picture of things obviously and amongst the average MMO player).
