most games that are instance, are more story based. You can actually comprehend the story that is taking place. And most instance game are strictly RPG's not MMO's very big difference. Diablo is arguably in my opinion the best game ever. Took for ever to level up and was very story based. You could beat the story line or be rushed and pvp. I think most games should be a instance based similar to that. with a good friend list and xfire or similar voice chat, that's all a clan needs and you can succeed. Then you can start making your own series of games.
In contrast I have a hard time focusing on the story becuase there are way to many side quest that have nothing to do with the story ( games like RS, ROM , Fiesta, Perfect World). Also with MMO's if you don't happen to find a guild willing and able to help you along with group kill with you then you never get to see any story. Then you just wind up grinding solo anyhow trying to amass enough wealth to buy a weapon worth a crap so you can have a prayer of beating the next of 50 bosses. There is just no end to it all.
Instance games, you can see the very clear progression of story lines, how the plot is laid out. Along the way you know you have beat something not just been beat by something that is bigger and has nothing at all to do with any story line.

I also want that all games would have such rich storyline as Diablo. Seriously...
MMO's are great and have their part and all but, I enjoy knowing that I killed everything in that instance. Loot is still difficult at best . But, games just don't have story line that people can see played through anymore.
Nothing against instancing but it is the mechanics that convrt a MMO to Mutliplayer game. So for me discussion about instancing for MMO is stupid and pointless.
PS: In general your words are very pointels as most of the things you are talking about have nothing to do with instancing in general.
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

That's all fine and good for YOU. However there are tons of gamers out there and not all share your perspective and enjoy the same things you do. I for one prefer not to have a clear goal so that I can pick my own direction and not be shoehorned into some kind of scripted story that I have no interest in and would rather make my own adventures.
Diablo 2 was a fun game in it's time but I've beaten it backwards and forwards so many times that I no longer find any challenge in it.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
But aren't MMOs supposed to be massive?
We actually have to endure the shit MMO gameplay just for the reason they're massive.
What you described, OP, can be done just as well in a native RPG with some hosted multiplayer options.
Instances in MMORPGs are just very crappy co-op RPG sessions. I have yet to see an instance of a quality where I say to myself "instancing is worth the loss of the real-world feeling, because this instance provide with me with a great adventure."
Most instances are weak and dumbed down versions of a boring co-op RPG. If they made an instanced zone that was as unique and fulfulling as a section of Dragon Age Origins content, then maybe I would be more for instancing.
Most "scripted" mmorpg instances are nothing more than, kill mob X to make mob Y spawn. Of course they throw in a massive amount of overworld text spam that the mobs spout out, not giving you any time to read it before the battle begins, to add some sort of lame story to the whole thing.
Let us take WoW, near release.
The Molten Core wouldbe an open event for both factions, bosses slightly downgraded.
What do you think?
Let´s take WoW.
Blizzard would add another faction, sometjing like the undead become independant.
Now imagine Molten Core.
I like both styles personally. Although I do miss being in a dungeon and having to compete against a rival guild for whatever camp we were both after, those were always fun, or frustrating, depending on the circumstances. When the Lost Dungeons expansion came out for EQ I really liked being able to go to a dungeon and not worry about having to fight rival guilds for monsters. Now playing on the old RZ server you always ran the risk of getting jacked mid-fight by a group mate, which happened to me once, but overall the experience was a nice break from the constant shoulder watching. In the end though, preferably I would like a non-instanced world to play in, but given what we have these days, I don't mind instances, as long as I am still having fun, which, at the moment, I am.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
