    Who cares?

As long as the game is good, I will play it.

To me I always thought mmos had persistent wordls with many people playing together. Today it seems like everything is instanced and soloable just like the classic online rpg.

The problem with people trying to argue for terms to mean what they "feel" it does is that then you have to spend the rest of your life trying to convince others why your own definition is the best/most appropriate one, and of course this is often because of personal feelings and experiences you may have that others obviously don't.
My wife tells me often I'm a know it all (and she's right) but why bring that to the internet to people who could care less who I am and what I think I know?  Why not just deal with facts as opposed to perceptions?

The reason Guild Wars is not a MMO is because you cant All be in combat at the same place at the same time (yes even tho you can do this in a real MMO without Crashing, but it still possible option in a MMORPG). Cant do that in Guild Wars because the only place where you inteact with other players in persistance, is in the Major Cities and Towns, which disable Combat options. So basically its nothing more then a 3D Chat Room, with moving Avatars. Even ANET relize this. it is a Online Co-op RPG.

Games like that have a fixed Limit to the number of players that can perform Combat in the same area at the same time. This is not a MMO.

Guild Wars was what started this subject in the past, because it was the first big "stretch" in the interpretation.

Im too tired to use the search feature now, but if someone really cares about this, should start searching the origin, the most popular topics of years ago, at the time Guild Wars came.

No they didn't. If they did then I'd have to question why they haven't taken the game off the game list then. I mean if it isn't an mmo then why is it listed here?

because its a popular Co-op Online RPG. I guess we need to also stop with the Dragon Age Orgin stuff as well, since it doesnt even have mutiplayer at all

Dragon Age doesn't have its own section.

Im wasnt talking about Guild Wars being an MMO.

I was talking about the whole discussion originating and reaching its climax years ago, topics surround Guild Wars "status".

I also think Guild Wars is not an MMO. I said many times that just maybe 1/5 of the games list on this site deserve to be called MMORPGs.

    IMO, it's..

    - Persistent open world

    - COMMUNITY

    - Adventure

    - Variety

    - Meaningful quests (Not just "Kill/Collect" X amount of X quests throughout)

If we finish out the rest..it is MMORPG. The last part is most important..to me. ROLE PLAYING GAME. I'm not saying "How art thee this day?" RPG, but much like games like Final Fantasy, etc. LONG story driven games that you can get lost in the world and feel you are a part of. NOT instant gratification, gear heavy, stat heavy games. That is what console games are for.

Again, this is MY opinion and outlook on the subject.

    Massively - means very big.

Multiplayer - means multiple people playing together.

Online - means its played online.

Role - means you assume a role.

Playing - means you are playing.

Game - means its a game i.e. fun.

Now lets tie in these words.....

Massively means it is big in Multiplayer capacity meaning that a lot of people are online playing out a game role for fun in the same serverplace.

An example of such a game would be EverquestWoWEvE. An example of a game that is not a MMORPG is a game like GuildwarsOgameFacebook.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Farm town doesn't have enough features to be classified as ROLE PLAYING. If you consider yourself role playing a farmer in Farm Town then why don't you say you are role playing a dot-eating-ghost in Pacman? Is Pacman a rpg?

This just in, Halo is an RPG.

Forget about Halo. Pacman Online is the bestest of all mmorpg in 2009!

    Um.... why?

Role playing is what you make it.

I've seen better 'roleplaying' on featureless forums than that shown by some players in MMOs?

Does that make forums an RPG?

it maybe role playing but posting on forum isn't exactly a game.

When I am typing this post I don't think I am playing a game.

While I certainly wouldn't consider Farm Town to be an RPG (Or, by extension an MMORPG) .. I would contend that it does fit the basic requirements to be classified as an MMO game.

MMO = Persistent Gameworld + Persistent Character(s) + Persistent Community

How about playing a game like "Mafia" or "Werewolf" on a forum?  Does that make it an MMORPG?

I like that definition a lot.

Particularly the Persistent Characters part becuase it sets a standard that many MMOs would have to meet.

I would suggest that the definition of "Persistent Characters" could include character assets?

I too enjoy this formula, I'm gonna see if I can't break it.

MW2? - Has a persistent character, but is lacking much in the world and community.

I tried to get my friend to give me a quantifiable number that makes a game mmorpg material.

He answered having 100+ people in a single area with opprotunites for interaction.

You misunderstand what RPG means. It sounds like you want it to means people roleplay in the game. The reality is that it simply means it is a system with progressive character advancement.

Your character in Pac Man has no stats, skills, gear or attributes. Pac Man is not an RPG.
