THE TRUTH: What do you handle better hardcore PVP or hardcore PVE?

Personally, I handle much better hardcore PVE. I can't stand some random guy owning me :) But I welcome a hard environment / mobs. Guess this tells something about my personality but don't know what exactly.

What about you?

I can't really vote on this poll. For one, you need to define what "hardcore" is for this instance. If you leave it up to people's imagination, your results are likely to be skewed.

Since I don't think I've ever really participated in "hardcore" PvP, I can't say whether I like one over the other or neither. I would like to see a game that incorporates challenging environments in both aspects, though.

Honestly, I don't care if a game is hardcore.  What's more important to me is the quality of the game itself.  I can enjoy hardcore PvE/PvP if the game is fun; if not, it becomes tedious, which is exactly what I'm not looking for in a game.  So I voted "like I care" because it doesn't really matter to me.

I'm not here to complete my forum PVP dailies.

    Think Darkfall and original EQ.

It's always been my opinion that great PvPers were also great PvEers.  It doesn't work the other way around though.

    So both.

The meaning of hardcore is one: to aim at the highest subjects of the game. On practice there are two ways to realize it:

    1. To spend more time playing the game. That is the common sense of hardcore of the new players mostly because its the main way to be hardcore in most newly MMOs

    2. To use your brain. Old peoples that have many years MMO careers behind them mostly use that strategy as they have work, kids and many committed in general so do not have much time to spend in front of MMOs. I personally find it as the only way to face all the challenges in so named "hardcore" MMOs :P

I think you have those mixed up.  Spending more time is the old-school way to be hardcore.  The 'play smarter' is the new, 'dumbed down' approach to hardcore.

No I have not mixed anything. You are partially right because when we have been still young and stupid our understanding for hardcore was the same as the new young players have.

We might be talking about different things then.  I tend to equate 'old school' MMOs with the 'time = effort' mentality of the younger players and the 'new wave' MMOs with the 'play smarter, not longer' mentality of a more mature playerbase.

Most of the time I'm looking for a challange and that can be difficult to find with both. I get rather annoyed sometimes with the complete lack of AI with mobs. It really doesn't have to be that clever to provide a little more challenge.

For example why do mobs with good range attacks often run towards you, when they should be kiting; and why do so few mobs actually interrupt you at a sensible time or pull you into traps etc? In PvP you often chose your spells by the character class you're playing and yet I've never seen a mob do this.

I'd like to see more mixing of mobs where higher level aggressive mobs can be found roaming areas where you are farming non-aggro mobs, or mobs that are usually passive that act differently and either link, or run if you keep attacking their kind, but then if you set a trap or work in a team you can still catch the mobs that keep out of range from you.

I had to vote 'neither' because I don't care about hardcore at all.  Given the two, I only want PvE, I detest PvP, especially one-on-one PvP with a passion.  If I wanted to be fighting against random assholes, I'd go play a fighting game.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

So hardcore means either a ton of ganking or a ton of wasted time.

I'd like to see some challenge and thinking brought back into mmos but getting ganked constantly and wasting time lfg, corpse running, recovering lost xp from death and all the crap you people loved about eq is a waste.

It's just to have a general idea, think EVE and... whatever other you think it's hardcore PVE, or antoher one instead of EVE ^^

I dont think the new MMOs encourage smarter gameplay. Even opposite. The only thing they encourage is play time invested and give very little meaning of player actions. This way any content become "available for everyone". That I name commercial crap.

Definitely Hardcore PvP. I don't mind losing to another player in a skill-based game. It's why I enjoyed games like EVE, UO and SB.

I find Hardcore PvE, by every definition I have seen so far, to be a masochistic exercise in both process and penalty. It's the reason I have little affinity for Aion's and WOW's PVP - victory is determined by how hardcore of a PvE player you are.

    Hardcore takes time and effort.

I don't want to spend either one on a video game. I don't have a problem with hardcore content for those basement-dwelling-2-kid-40-year-olds who play every night till dawn; But a game that forces me to do this crap goes straight to the shelf of doom.

    And honestly... what for?

Are you kidding me? In a good corp you can reequip in 5 minutes. EvE is not at all what I consider hardcore. Not hardcore PvP, because you can pretty much fulfill a useful role and have fun in group PvP from day 1, PLUS no random idiot can gank you away because he raided 24/7 for the last 10 weeks...

and not hardcore PvE, because you can skill while not logging into the game, you don't have to run the PvE crap for months on end, sure there's some faction grind, but there's a myriad of ways to make money without ever grinding anything...

So NO, EvE is the exact contrary to a hardcore-pvp-pve game, which is by my definition, first and foremost a time-waster. Grind instance Z 1500 times and get 'arcane staff of the arcane arcanist'... sucks!

    Honest.

I regularly die doing things I really shouldn't be doing. For example...

    - learning how bomb deployment works on a Sunday afternoon in 0.0

    - solo wormhole exploration in a battleship in enemy territory

    - fitting smartbombs on my industrial ship and trying to do a level 2 mission in low sec with it

    - PvP in a Drake... fitted with nos and rocket launchers.

I don't know why I do these things other than the fact that they amuse me to no end.
