"Lack of storyline" is a GOOD thing. We don't need dev's guiding our mouses and keyboards, forcing us to play out some contrived scene like WOW does. However, "lore" is a very good thing and I expect this MMO to deliver upon that. The main thing is that they give us a "world" and not a "story". I am tired of games that make me feel like I am playing-on-rails, being driven down some story path. I want to freely adventure in a "world". Hoping this game delivers.
Lack of storyline is an awful thing. We need good story development, and lore can not accomplish this.
There are enough MMO's without any thought to story available already.
The main thing is "story", world can come after that. And too bad for you, that's what they'll be giving us.
And that's the way it should be. In a Final Fantasy.
Go back to your boring Oblivion.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Yeah, just about everything state in the OP was completely wrong.
Though I guess if you only play a game up to level 10 or so you'll notice an extreme lack of everything; the main thing that was wrong with it was that the story didn't start until you were an exceptionally high level. I've had an active FFXI account since it came out and still have yet to experience a quarter of the story and the things to do in it.
Something that they do need to work on for their next MMO is to keep people entertained from start to finish instead of just putting you in a world and expecting you to fend for yourself and earn yourself a position in which to experience the true game. It made the game have a tolerable community as only the patient and mature tended to get past the dreaded Dunes, but it also lost them a lot of customers who got the wrong perception of how the game really is.

I don't play Oblivion. And if you have to have a script to play, then I suggest off-line RPG's. That should save you the monthly fee, which you can spend at McDonald's buying your classmates lunch. And you can tell them "Pencilrick" is to thank for that.

Dude.
MMORPG. RPG. R.P.G.
I'm tired of doing thousands of quests that have no depth to them. Doing quest #210 that's a repeat of quest #4, 11, 25, 49, 66, 89, 111 etc.... is just stale now. Very stale. Give me a good story to play through that'll connect me and my character to the world.
If you want some generic MMO with no real story line to play, go play a Korean MMO. There's plenty of those that seems to suit your flavour.

Hey, I'm sick of quests too, but when you say "storyline", to me it conjures up "on-rails" gameplay following some endless cookie crumb trail of quests.
"World" MMO's is where it's at, and is what we will probably see in Final Fantasy XIV. However, if they make it like some linear RPG where you predictably go from chapter to chapter, then it will fail.
Now, it may be you are confusing "storyline" with "lore" and "history" and "factions". I am all for those latter three. It is great for the world to have a past, and a reason for going's-on in the present. I just do not want to see some contrived linear path that I am forced to follow.
Not to worry, however, because I think this game will deliver the lore, history, and player freedom that make for a good "world".
if you played FFXI then you would know that they do story the right way. Its somthing you can do that tells a great plot without it being forced on you. If you wanted you could completely ignore the story and do whatever you wanted (wich was damn plenty) it was always there for you if you wanted, no strings attactched, though you would miss out on a nice piece of gear at the end.
Lore and stuff is part of both things, it helps fill in the story's blanks and you could experince it wether you played the missions or not. I know plenty of people who never touched much or the main storys and had a great time, SE knows what they are doing so dont compare this to an offline RPG or anything but FFXI.
I think people are confusing 'lack of a storyline' with 'lack of a story' (lore).
The key word here being 'line', linear, static. We don't need that in an MMO, nor is it a good idea. It works with single player games, because they are fast turn arounds. Play through and forget. In order for an MMO to be even remotely worth the time, effort, and risk involved in creating one, it needs to be evolving. Not just tacking on linear storyline after linear storyline. That gets just as dull as no story whatsoever, just grinding.
For example, look at FFXI. It did have story to it, and in some ways it was a bit too linear. However, there were some cases in which you didn't necessarily have to follow one storyline vs. another. Hopefully FFXIV will have story involvement, without having to put the game on rails, dictating exactly how we play the game and progress through it. That's something I've always like about FF games. While there was an overriding storyline to all of them, they had quite a few points where you can break away from that temporarily. This is essential towards having a lasting MMO.

SE needs to show us more gameplay. A few snippets here and there just don't cut it.
