So i'd heard about WAR for a while and tried the trial quite a while back and thought it was the stupidest game ever. I was even playing with a friend and it took us just a couple of hours to claim this a lost cause and give up. Fast forward some year or so later and I thought since I was MMO'less for the third straight month I needed to find something to eat up my copious amounts of free time now available. I looked for some free MMO's because, hell, one might be good when I ran across WAR and saw that it was doing an endless free trial. I thought why not give it another shot and installed it. The game started just like I remembered but due to the fact that I sometimes get busy and don't have time to play I don't think I got a great feel for the game the first time. I still wasn't that impressed with the beginning but as I started playing a bit more (What option did i have at this point, i had no other MMO) I started to get into it.
So I had rolled a DoK and really did not pay attention the fact I had rolled a healer class and saw that I could kick the crap out of stuff so assumed i was a DPS. (I know it's not now so stop yelling HEAL ME DAMN IT!) I started doing more quests and then stumbled upon "Public Quests". I read up on it and started doing one by accident and let me tell you. This is the most fun i've had in an MMO yet. This is almost 6 years and probably 50 MMO's tried worth of history here. Those things, were addictive. To boot, i got loot! (Rhyming not on purpose but didn't change it either). I teamed up with some people and got to meet some great folks. They told me about scenarios but I shrugged it off "Pft, this is fun. I don't care about no stinkin' scenarios".
So a couple days later I'm reading up on scenarios. This is after a little RvR action so I didn't know what to expect as I thought that was the PvP area. I was wrong. There is more PvP. I hate PvP. I abhore it. I quit Aion because of the PvP. I quit WoW beacuse of the PvP. I liked Guild Wars and FFXI because i didn't like PvP and GW had an option of just doing PvE and FFXI lacks all manner of PvP. I ask in public "So is this game PvP heavy?" I am assured it is essentially the game. I put it off the list of buy but decided to try it anyways. I hate hate hate hate PvP.
So there I was in a Scenario, loving the hell out of PvP. I don't know why. Maybe because of the sheer size of it? 15 vs. 15 and on a busy weekend it can be even more it seems. I just sit in the back and spam cures to anyone i can possibly cure. I run around, I do everything i can to keep my tanks alive. THEY'RE FLANKING TO THE RIGHT!! COVER THE VALLEY!! Yeah, I'm excited about the PvP finally and it's awesome.
So this is my first week review. Overall the Tier 1 of this game is freakin' fantastic. The Public Quests are awesome and have great payoffs. I like that PvP is not forced in the PvE sections of the world (Looking at you Aion). I just love everything in the game so far. I'm not great at the game but i have been in some parties that lived through what we were trying to do so i know i at least did good enough. It's a great game and am doing the free trial right now until after tuition is paid *shiver*. Then i'm going to look into getting it. Until then i'm going to make some more friends, learn more about the game and get my renown up (level 8 nearly). All in all this is a definite buy so far. I've been playing a week in the same little section of the world and am still having a blast so there is definitely some content so far. Hope it keeps up.

""So is this game PvP heavy?""
Seriously. That was at the second time you tried to play this game and you didn't know *anything* about the game you were trying?
Anyway, good to see you had fun. Let us know how it works out for you.
No, I actually didn't know anything about the game. I try to go into a game without knowing anything about it so I don't read negative reviews or read something that could turn me off of the game. Had i read this was a PvP heavy game, I'd not have played it. I'm not saying it's a great method for everyone but I like having a clean slate when I start a game so I can judge for myself what it's like. Then if i find I like it then I'll start to read up on it more and learn more about it. I didn't group with people until I'd known something about the game so i wasn't hurting anyone else with my stupidity so, i'm not sure why you had a problem with this method.

It's fine if you have money to burn, Grimey.

Glad you have fun. By all means, make the most out of the trial and see if you can still enjoy it.
I used to play the game for a while, and while it had some potential, they dropped the ball on too many key issues. Now, with EA strangleholding the game, and it's budget / staff all but squandered, there's little chance I see of this game ever becoming what it was supposed to be (and by now it's probably more cost effective to just make a new one).
I will say, though, that the first portion of the game (tier 1) can be an absolute blast. The real problems of the game don't really arise until after the trial (tiers 3 & 4), so be wary. If you can afford the money, it may be worth it. Otherwise you may want to hold out until 2010 / 2011. Should prove to be a better year for MMOs (knock on wood).
Well, i figure by the time i've played the heck out of the trial and buy the game for 20 bucks i'll have gotten a few months of enjoyment out of it which isn't too shabby for 20 bucks.

Even though i don't see a great future for War (unfortunately) the T1 was a great experience indeed. Thats why they made the endless T1 free trial after all. But as the game evolves after T1, it really loses a lot of its magic. Mythic failed to deliver.
My brain has 2 sides;Left and right. My left side has nothing right and my right side has nothing left...
That whole feeling will pass once you hit the higher tiers. Especially Tier 4. That's where the pain is.
Tier 1 and maybe 2 are the best places to be. Good fun.
OP, I had the same experience as you.
I played WAR during the last week of beta but didn't like it.
Then, 1 year later (2 weeks ago), after playing the trial for 3 days I was so surprised with how much it has improved (this game is a gem, really) that I purchased it. I am currently in my 3rd week and I am still having a blast.
This is so far one my best mmo experiences, and like you I have played them all.
I'll see how it is in T4, many here are rather negative, but I have met several people ingame who have leveled 4+ toons to lvl 40 and still love it (T4 is currently also beeing improved... we'll see).
It's not just here, it's all over the official forums, so there's no doubt the same complaints are coming from actual subscribers as well. T4, and particularly the city sieges are seen negatively by the majority of the population.
That said, like said before, they are looking to change the city scenario's in the coming months to a more pvp-like experience rather than the current PvE type versions.
Yes, you are right, I have also seen many actual players who love the game and most of them are also complaining about the cities in T4.
As you said, the good news is that the devs are aware of this problem and actively working to improve the situation : (link to dev forums: thread ).
hrmmm.... this review might get me to try WAR again (after my damn NEW laptop gets back from the service center, I eff'n hate gateway)
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
Rofl, you play a game based on pvp but then you hate pvp? why would you even play it? dumbest thing ever

you quit wow because of pvp? You seem to be using pvp as an excuse too much.

i loved Wars classes to me was the best part of the game, i have a game card here i been wanting to try the game again i REALLY hope the card is still good i think i got it christmas of 08 and still haven't used it..lol sux tho i bought the game from D2D so i'd have to redownload it and i usually lose intrest at just the thought of redownloading it..>.<
I agree with this! When I tried WAR, the PQ's were the single thing I enjoyed... Unfortunately it wasn't enough to make me suscribe to the game.
If you liked the PQ's and can get a hold of a trial to LOTRO and can hit level 30, Skirmishes in LOTRO are the closest thing I've found to PQ's in any other MMO I've played. (They aren't totally the same but pretty damn addicting)
I'm glad you enjoy the trial. However, keep in mind that alot of the doom stories and complaints come from people that played the game several months ago, and concidering that WAR is still a pretty young game, ALOT changes quite fast.
Another thing to keep in mind is that when browsing the official forums and stuff most of the threads are indeed negative and full of whining, but that's because people come to the forums when they're dissapointed or angry at something. I can honestly say that I'm one of those myself, but that's only because I love the game and want to help Mythic to improve it.
I've spent about 80 days in game of my last year in WAR, my main is an RR74 shaman and I've got all 9 alt slots filled. Don't be afraid of all the talk about T4 being bad and stuff, because it is a blast to about RR60 (which is quite far in the game). RvR, scenarios, instances, everything is fun, especially if you're in a good RvR guild. What Mythic needs to improve is the content after about RR60, the road to Warlord (an armor set) and from there to Sovereign is just too long, but they have talked about new itemization in the next patch so I'm excited to see what they're working on
EDIT: Btw, I just started a WAR blog so feel free to check it out, blogs usually give a more fair picture of the situation than forums usually do. alittlegitstale.blogspot.com
I played WAR at launch, even tho I don't really like PvP. But I loved it in this game. No commitment, just joining any open group and killing...awesome. And Public Quests are a stroke of genius that I fully expected other MMO's to freely copy. ( Champions Online already has.) The only reason I stopped playing was because they launched with WAY too many servers, therefore pop balance was so out of whack, one side always dominated. I expect it to be better now, just not ready to return. If none of the 2010 MMO's deliver( SW:TOR, APB, etc...), I may return. It really was fun.
They never fixed the pop balance problem. They're down to 4 servers and it's still a problem. Mostly it seems to swing like a pendulum over time, taking more pop with it in each passing. It's probably a big reason why they lost so many people
To the OP: Game is a blast until you hit tier 3/4 and realise they are just bad copies of the first tiers but with bigger class imbalances and a boring, broken end-game which seems to be more about PvE than PvP.
But doing scenarios in tier 1 and 2 was probably the most fun I had in an MMORPG for years and PQs were both innovative and fun. Too bad the rest of the game is crap.

I know a thousand people have already said this a thousand times, but, when you said,
"Overall the Tier 1 of this game is freakin' fantastic."
You hit the nail on the head, unfortunately Tier 4 is freakin' crap.
And what I cannot understand is that despite of the big subscriber drop and despite many people telling Mythic that T4 is crap they are still not fixing it.
Sure they are patching it up with reducing CC, lag etc but that is not the main issue. Still without CC and lag T4 is boring as hell because, as many have said, it rewards you more when you avoid the other side and just run around and lock down undefended keeps.
And why that is happening is simple, little reward for defending a keep, hence alot of people dont do it, and less reward for engaging in PvP than locking down keeps. That coupled with the fact that there is virtually no death penalty, people dont see much point in engaging each other so they just run around each other instead. And the Land of The Dead made this worse by locking out one side for a considerable time, again reducing the RvR to PvE instead of PvP.
So Mythic needs to get into their thick skulls, people want incentives to do PvP, NOT PvE. If you want bland PvE you play WoW.
