Look for more doing it in the near future, I take it WOW has a lot of facebook friends and everyone else wants some to.

You can find a facebook page for about any mmo you can name, even a lot of the F2P games.  For that matter any game console, PC Gaming you name it.  You like comic books? There is  a facebook page for DC Comics as well as Marvel. A certain genre of movies your cup of tea? Yup there is a facebook feed.   I hope this knowledge doesnt interfere with the daily SOE bashing but I thought perhaps some facts might prove usefull.

There's certainly nothing wrong with any company marketing via facebook, and SOE is no exception. What most of us 'disgruntled vets' are waiting for is for them to conveniently forget to reward those who actually sign up as a fan. I have no doubt they will do so. There's been no binding promise of anything, only nudges and hints, nor can they actually link a facebook account, to a SWG account.

    We wait and see.

They do seem to have this fixation with motivating customers with the chance of winning something: TCG booster packs, and now joining up on the facebook page.  If people sign up and walk away empty handed, I'm sure some will be disappointed.  At least joining Facebook is free, unlike the TCG boosters.

Personally, I think if SOE made joining the new fanpage intrinsically beneficial (i.e. joining was its own reward), it would do better for the community.  Instead, Drakuul seemed to focus on manipulation via peer pressure and the chance of some reward.

Every once in a while, I actually consider going back to SWG.  Then some recent development reminds me of the way they do business and I come back to my senses.

Shinies and trinkets seems to be the only language the developers (and the NGE target market) seem to understand.

What I came away with reading the post was that a community coming together to discuss the game could be beneficial to the game. I guess one can read things into whatever they feel will further their agenda. Whatever that may be.

Right, because there are not already something like 50 senators and player volunteers doing that already.  Well at least until soe fires the entire group of them and replaces them with people who will not speak against them.  There isn't a team of community relationship employees that have this as their sole responsibility.

The big holdback for swg is that it needs yet another social networking location to give feedback from players to the developers and facebook was what soe came up with as a solution.  I am sure this is how the developers will learn about what players want, because they don't already have one of the most active message forums in the gaming industry with over 65% of their players as active posters.

    Unbelievable.

I have learned to not put any form of trust or belief in anything that soe promises or says.  Regardless of how ambiguous or crystal clear they are about such promises.

However, I find it slippery that soe is alluding to giving player rewards, without actually saying one way or another.  Especially when they are clear about the rewards for doing the same thing in Freerealms, EQ and EQ2.   Nothing they do at this point will really surprise me though.

What I do not believe is that soe needs another forum for players to share ideas to help the game.  This is a marketing campaign.

Whoa whoa whoa! I just wanna make sure your burn on Daffid is clear. It's difficult when people don't post '/sarcasm'.

So you say that a Facebook fanpage is a good place for the community to interact, and that will benefit the game.

Daffid says he feels they already have a place to interact, and that the FB page is a scam.

You're now saying Daffid read the OP incorrectly(?) when in fact he was responding to your post, and not the OP (I believe).

Please clarify your last post Grampa.

When this contrived promise of a prize does not materialize it will give the haters a new platform from which to rant about the evils of SOE. After five years of practiced hatred I would think a much better plan of action would have evolved.

He's not coming down on you Gramps. Just trying to direct you to the point the OP was trying to make. But by all means, continue to troll and stir up controversy by poking the vets if you want to. Or... you could actually take part in the discussion.

    Thanks Bob.

By no means was I anything but "easy". I simply pointed out a flaw in your point Grampa, and BTW with your lack of awcknowledgment on that point can we assume that you've seen your error now?

Facebook feeds are for people with common interests to come together. I would think  things could come from this, making friends for example. I see no promises made.

I really have a hard time believing that, as even most current SWG players who did join the fanpage would likely disagree with you, but I suppose your statement  "I guess one can read things into whatever they feel will further their agenda. Whatever that may be." may just ring true here.

    Cheers.

Not sure what the big deal is. Blizzard offered an in game reward for people to switch over to a b.net account and the lemmings ate it up.

To me, its the sign of a rather inexperienced or out of touch marketing department trying to be a part of the viral monster that Facebook is. That being said, while it may be great for everyday common topics and videos - it is pretty much a wasteland for run of the mill businesses.  SOE would be best served by tunring its attention elsewhere.

That is unless they intend to put up a Facebook app.

Where did I say that anything was promised?  Once again you are trying to associate me with comments made by others and hold me accountable for those comments.  If I think soe made some promises I will tell you.  You don't need to go about assuming I have said something, will say something or will repeat the same things others say and then hold me accountable for those words.   I answered your question as you asked, sorry it wasn't the answer you hoped I would give.

Otherwise, as I answered above, I could care less what soe says anymore as I have no faith in their words.  Their actions have constantly trumped their words and that makes anything they say, imply or promise worthless.

However I would not blame anyone for assuming there are rewards to be obtained.  The wording is poor and every highlighted in certain official announcements as seen here.   Intentional or not, I don't care.  Reward or not, I don't care.

Also, I am saying this is a cheap marketing tool and nothing more.

Well, that reward was not insinuated, it was clearly advertised. What SOE is doing is implying a reward with (likely) no intention of actually putting out.

Another thing about the Blizzard reward, is that it was not necessarily a reward for switching your account. The account switch was mandatory. The reward was a peace offering for those who dragged their feet in doing so. In the end, everyone got one regardless of whether they wanted it or not.

I replied to your comments that were about this being a community tool.  Remember that post?  The one where neither you or I talked about the aspect of implied rewards?  I found there to be enough information to disagree with your take on this being a community tool and that is what I responded to.

It is clear what you are doing, because you simply think you are far more clever than you actually are.  Trying to hold me accountable for something I never said just shows you lack any desire to have a real discussion.  Good luck with your little crusade and I hope you give yourself huge accolades.  Really I do, because I don't think anyone else is.

When confronted with facts and straight talk you resort to 'insult and run' tactics.

Well at least you got off your soapbox for a few minutes.

Tbh, I think you're looking too hard for some hidden agenda.  Since there isn't one, your comments seem kind of disconnected from the thread imo.

I simply noticed that SOE appears to be using the lure of possible rewards (no mention of the word promise btw) to get players to encourage other players to join a new fan page.  Since Draakul's already boasting about fanpage numbers, it came across a some kind of new, manipulative marketting strategy.  Since I happened to notice this, I decided to comment on it.  I think the thread is fairly straightforward.

Blizzard merged their WoW account system into the Battle.net system, so it was mandatory for WoW players to switch to a BNet account.  They gave their customers an in-game pet for the inconvenience, much like we got a plaque for the extreme inconvenience of the CU pretty much destroying SWG back in the day.
