No offense, all of you, but if there's little risk of dying, this will be even more casual than WoW. However, I just got a beta key today and am supposed to have my new gaming PC tomorrow, so I'll pass my judgement once I play the sneak peek on the 9th and 11th.
Really, I don't give a damn about how the show went. You said it yourselves. TV shows and MMOs are different mediums. In TV shows, the heroes are supposed to be invincible. In Star Trek, the captain is usually the hero. In an MMO, you're supposed to have some sort of challenge. Usually that challenge involves death. I'm not the hero here. We can't all be heroes. You have to earn that title. If it's given from the beginning, what's the point?
However, casual players, if what they say is true, here you go. The next best thing for you, as it's the only even semi-casual space MMO since E&B, however, I have no doubt that E&B was a much better game.
Got to disagree with STO being canon. As a rule, cartoons, books and video games are never considered canon. Can't tell you how many arguments have been started over the cartoon series even though rodenberry himself said it wasn't a part of the official canon. But I do agree that setting it 30 years after Nemesis frees the developers up to do whatever they want with the franchise without breaking canon. If this was set in TOS timeframe with some of what we've seen, then the canon violation argument would be more credible.
I understand cartoons/video games/books/comics etc generally not being considered canon, but Cryptic did go through the trouble of getting official permission from CBS to make it canon, and still has to submit all the things it adds for review by CBS. I think this makes it qualify as canon as far as anyone official is concerned.
As far as it being the best we can hope for, well, considering all the challenges that go into making an MMO and all the different varieties of Trekkers out there and all the different varieties of MMO gamers out there, I do think it's the best we could hope for. That is, I think it's got the best chance of pleasing the most number of people based on the difficulty of the IP, the time frame it's being done in, and the general state of desire in MMO gamers styles and numbers at this current date. I think if they tried to lean it more in any one direction, they risk losing equal numbers of people they would currently keep, or more than they would gain. It's a delicate balance and I think from a developer perspective it's about as good as it could be without having Blizzard style money/time backing them (ie infinite).

I think this makes it qualify as canon as far as anyone official is concerned. Probably. They do have a lot of leeway seeing as the franchise is now in the alternate reality and this game takes place in the prime reality. But I guarentee at some point the franchise will be back in the prime reality again and there won't be a second thought given to what has been established in the game. But for time being, it IS going to be a lot of fun seeing where Cryptic takes it. The latest "path to 2409" news mentions Commander Sela still being alive and trying to gain power. As far as it being the best we can hope for, well, considering all the challenges that go into making an MMO and all the different varieties of Trekkers out there and all the different varieties of MMO gamers out there, I do think it's the best we could hope for. I think they did a good job as well, and you are right that you can't please everybody. But most people don't see things from a developer perspective. If they had a release date that was locked with no room to wiggle then I could see saying that. But I've NEVER seen a game have that finite of a condition. Many times games are pushed back because the game isn't finished or there are still bugs to be worked out. I don't think they would lose any subsribers if they pushed the game back 3 months and added PVE content for the Klingons or added more things to do at the social hub. After all, if we are really trying to please the most number of people then adding content equal to the Federation and adding more to do at the social hubs would make that more possible wouldn't it?Like I said, I'm happy with what's available for me, but I know that we could do better for more people if equal content was available to Klingons and maybe more to do at Starbases besides getting gear.

I don't remember Picard, Sisko,Janeway or Archer dieing either. Kirk died, but that was after he first retired and then was retrieved from the Nexus. The fact that Sisko lived through all those battles in the Dominion War is nothing short of amazing. Oh I forgot, he had the "prophets" on his side
For the sake of Trek fans interested in trying out this game, here is a list of known ways the game breaks the spirit and design of the Trek IP. 1 - You can only be the Captain. You can't play the navigator. You can't play the chief Engineer. You can't play the science officer. There is one class - captain, with three possible 'builds' -tactical, science, engineering. This also mean that captains run the entire ship on their own. Players can't form a crew and run a ship together. I agree, a player should have to work their way up to captain and be able to start a clan where the members are part of the crew. When the clan gets to a certain size the leader(s) could complete an exam to become admirals a have their own fleet. 2 - Captains own every ship they unlock. Yep. Don't know where Picard is keeping the 'Stargazer', but he can park the Enterprise and run around on his old ship if he likes. When you upgrade to a new ship you should be required to 'turn in' your old one but be able to save the configuration. That way if your new ship gets destroyed or somethgin happend where it becomes inoperable then you are given a new ship and you can port the configuration over from a previously owned ship. Also you shouldn't be able to switch ships at will. 3 - Captains and their ships are immortal. Don't worry about battles anymore, because you can't die, and your ships can't be destroyed. Ships should have damage dealt and become inoperable but as long as starfleet can build a ship they can always repair or rebuild it. I would vote that if your ship becomes severely damaged and needs to be repaired and durign this period of time you are required to use another ship which can be based on the configuration of a previously owned ship. Repairs should take a long time to complete and be very costly. 4 - Ground combat features personal shields and ranged healing abilities (spells). Standard fantasy MMORPG combat with a Trek skin. They should have designed combat less like the normal tank, healer, dps setup. Healing in star trek has always been out of combat or atleast up close. The shields thing is reasonable I mean they could have personal shields but they need to work like you would expect, like no permanent shields and just standing around 'tanking' damage with them Feel free to add more examples.
About klingons, I can understand why their progression is primarily pvp, they are a warrior race.

Well, its iffy, but Sisko shoved du'kot into the pit of fire and went down with him. The prophets have him now but I don't know if you can call him technically dead.

Whle I am huge fan but did sit and watch the show a few time, I believe the OP raises some valid concerns, not so much from the franchise side but from the gameplay perspective. Here's why...
1. It would be fun to have to go up the Starfleet management ladder to earn the captainship of a starship. This could be implemented through promotions for successful missions or achieving specific objectives, all adding to immersion and more RPG to the MMO.
2. I don't know the mechanics of the game but again it seems like it's done the simplest way here. Why not have smaller to bigger ships based on your character's career progression. Again, more RPG to the MMO
3. This sounds wrong. There should be some mechanism to store DNA (or something) at a cost and using advanced technology resurect a player, with consequences (e.g. your ship blew up, you lose your command for a while, again OR something...).
Overall i feel like this MMORPG has put more emphasis on the MMO aspect but lacking potential on the RPG side. Again, i don't know much about the game (besides a few readings here and there) but if the above are true it sounds like they took the short path to product delivery and put the creative hat on the side (for now?).

I agree, a player should have to work their way up to captain and be able to start a clan where the members are part of the crew. When the clan gets to a certain size the leader(s) could complete an exam to become admirals a have their own fleet. Except that if you have to rely on others to do things for you they have to make every tedious role fun, someone does nothing but fly, someone else watches the gas gauge ect ect ect, only the gunner is gonna have any fun. Not too mention disconnects, random afks, arguements over tactics, lets face it, everyone wants to give orders, whos gonna want to follow, other then the weak minded, and they have their game, its called wow. It is kinda lame that you dont use and work to enhance the ships for longer periods. But the way they did it is functional and ive found that once you find the ship you like you stick to it and when its time to move up a tier you take its upgrade more often then a different type, and once i get it looking the way i like i stick with it. 3 - Captains and their ships are immortal. Don't worry about battles anymore, because you can't die, and your ships can't be destroyed. Repairs should take a long time to complete and be very costly. If dieing costs no one pvps, if no one pvps you cant even play the klingons, thats no fun. Lets just hope they quit wild swinging the nerf bat for balance and take a more delicate small buffs approach. 4 - Ground combat features personal shields and ranged healing abilities (spells). Standard fantasy MMORPG combat with a Trek skin. They should have designed combat less like the normal tank, healer, dps setup. Healing in star trek has always been out of combat or atleast up close. The shields thing is reasonable I mean they could have personal shields but they need to work like you would expect, like no permanent shields and just standing around 'tanking' damage with them I havent found any ranged ground healing, just hypo sprays you can inject yourself with, just like the shows. You can have an engie enhance and re energize your shields i guess maybe, but the shields on your person dont last very long at all, in fact a heavy crit in the back will often anihilate the shield and vaporize you into a very cool cloud of ions. Best death animation EVER. Feel free to add more examples.

Edit note :Fixed.
I was actually referring to the end of the occupation arc at the beginning of season 6. Out of thousands of ships, the defiant was the only only one to make it thru. Then they fly right into the wormhole where thousands of dominion ships are coming and then all of a sudden those ships disappear. If I was as negative as the original poster I would call it bad writing since we will ALWAYS know that Sisko never dies.

You reckon that part can be made a sticky at the top of these forums to head off some of these endless bloody whining posts?

They should either do that or sticky a thread titled "Please deposit all whinnage here." I think every game in development should have this on their forums. It would sure help to remove the clutter (such as "This game will fail because.." ) from the usual suspects and free up more space to actually discuss the game.
