I dont understand how people can say there will be no XP. From my understanding there is no "character" levels. Your levels is weapon based. There has to be some form of weapon progression thus there is XP!!!!! (of some sort anyways). A game without XP would be a sims game.

I don't know .... I'd be happy with no voice acting. First off I saw some trailers for FFXIII in Japanese the other day -- in years past i never bothered to look at that kinda thing. You know what I saw ... lips that match the voices. I was SHOCKED. Not because people could actually do it, but more of a combination of A) seeing something not dubbed into English and the realization that American artists suck. If only there was a way to bring about that much skill in animation in an English speaking area. I mean nothing in English ever really work ...

Character progression in a way that is not the typical gain-experience-to-level model we are accustomed to. However I would like to say if it is anything like FF2 I will drop SE from the map entirely ... gawd i hate that game.

Whats the difference if your sword levels up and gives your character stats vs. your character leveling up and getting stats?

Because there isn't!
PlayStation Blog: You talked about the levelling system not being experienced based, I was just wondering if you were able to tell us exactly what kind of system you're working on, and has it been completely defined?
Tanaka: This time it really depends on the Armoury system. It's going to depend on how much you use your own equipment and weapons. The more you use it, the more the skill will go up of your class, so that's the way you will get to higher levels for the class - the skills. You'll also get abilities. It's not going to be like if you fight more monsters, you'll get more level ups, like similar to the experience system. Of course, if you fight against monsters, you will get some skill points, but it will help more if you attend to Guildleves. So that will be a more efficient way to hone your skills and 'level up' your character.

Granted that may not be the traditional XP system, but its still an XP system. So quanty of monsters wont net you levels up, so you have to continually fight tougher monsters to get more level ups. Thats a form of XP system all of the way. I am one of the biggest FFXIV fasnboys out there but this is plain as day that its xp. Progression is always basyed on some form of XP.
If you started with all the skills/abailities max stats. the only thing you could progeress in was getting better gear via whatever route then that would be a game that had no XP.
Edit: All this seems thus far is an expanded version of FFXI weapon levels. You leveled them up by fighting tougher things, but you couldnt take a level 1 weapon to sky and hit a darn thing, You had to level your weapon. That was an xp system for ffxi's weapons it just wasnt the main xp system.
Edit: Ahh i missed that you could do quests to level your skill up, ahh crap there is NO "quests" either Its "guildleves"

Its still not XP, you're not gaining points for every mob you kill and totaling them up to gain a lvl...thats an XP system.
Think of it more like the FFXI weapon-skill system...where all your weapons have a skill point that may go up after you kill 1 mob or it could take 50 mobs before u gain a point! Or a 0.1 or 0.2 or 0.5 etc, and then eventually a point!
Experience is something you gain after every kill, Skill is something you gain over time by using a weapon or spell over and over and any number of things...and not just enemies. There is still no clarity yet on if you can use your weapons to hack at a tree, or grass{Harvesting} and gain skill from just using it like that yet.
I disagree. FFXI weapon system was level based. You could whack 15,000,000,000 bees in south gustaberg and never get your weapon leveld to max or even close to it. That fact that you dont get something for every kill is irrelivant. I would be willing to bet that there is some MMO's out there that give 0 xp for killing weak mobs. So by your terms thats not an xp system.
IMO any sytem that you progress in is an XP system because you slowly gain something untill you reach a goal. Then you have to take on new challenges slowly progress to rach a goal. thats the core feature of XP. Quanity has little to do with xp. If you have progression you have XP.

I hated FF2 because everything was too random. Blame it on bad coding or something but the guy at the front of my party one time i tried to play through was getting magic skill ups for a single cure, the "mage" rarely got any and had more weapon boost that spells, and the last guy NEVER got a skill up ... game freaking sucked
Too early to know this kinda stuff. With SE holding back the lion's share of information about the game it is way too early for anyone but the developers to know answers to these questions. We dont even have a full job list as of right now.

Normally the difference between a level based game and a weaponskill based game is that in a level based game you get a certain amount of xp from every kill whereas in a weaponskill based game you have x% chance to skillup on every swing. You gain bits in each of them but in weaponskill based its more luck based.
More importantly in weaponskill based games since each skill is separately calculated you have more freedom to choose what to focus on. In a level based game your swords and hammers cap both go up by Y points when you level whereas in a weaponskill based game maybe you leave off hammers and can raise swords higher.

In FFXI you had to level your character and each individual weapon.
I think you guys forgot what XP stands for. Experience Points
You cannot increase skills without experience using that skill. If experience nets you better preformance with the skill its still experience based.
It maybe experience based on skills but its still experienced based.
Hopefully I dont need discuss what experience is.
From my "experience" of looking around these forums on this site the main reason people use the word skill based is because they are fanatics acting like there game is sooooo much better because its "skill based". The DF board pre-launch was plauged with it. Its all BS because it takes experience to level the skills.
How do you quatify experience in a game? You add points to it. All be it random, level based or usage. You guys are all looking at it from the surface look deeper.

Nope, huge difference between any type of XP system and skill based...

Maybe in a fanatics eyes, but it takes something to level up skills and thats all it takes to make it an XP system. Skill ups is equvilant to XP points.

Typical, now you resort to butchering quotes because you have no counter argument. You cant just quote 1/2 a phrase in my sentence when it was leading to a point.
You probably think FFXIV doesnt have quest. because there guildleves right?

Sure I can, just like that!
You are also assuming there are even points to this skill system. Ever stopped and thought that SE has come up with something entirely new that's not regulated by a typical point system; which you constantly keep adding to your argument!?

It doesn't matter if its experience points, skill points, job/class points, or weapon points its all the same thing a system in which you gain experience and progress to the game to strengthen your character.
Experience - knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone: a man of experience
Just because they aren't using the term experience points doesn't mean their no system to gain experience. It will be similar as it was before; you do quest, kill, and hit something to gain whatever the points they are calling and you get stronger, no huge difference.

Yes I am assuming there are points, because thats the only real logical way to code and keep track of things. Its very possible that we may not see the points but that by no means, means that the game code is not keeping track of points, just because it doesnt read them out. I am not pretending to be an expect coder because I am not , But I have had my fair share of programming classes with c++, java and even a game programming classes. I promise there will be a point system. keeping track of your weapon XP .

MMORPGs have always been a numbers game, and XIV will be no different. SE is just introducing a twist on it. I'll bet you my entire fortune, 6 figures last I checked, that spreadsheets with formulas will pop up a few months after release. If you haven't noticed, a lot of MMO players are very mathematically gifted and use their gift to find that peak in the genre. It happened in XI, it happend in every other MMO after it and it will happen for XIV. Guaranteed.
Video games are just a orgy fest of numbers. I guess this is why I like them. I like math
