I haven't watched this film yet so before I watch it I want to have your opinions... Is this film good or this doesn't deserve to be watched on the big screen?
Comments
It's worth watching if only for the special effects. If you see it in IMAX or 3d the visuals will more than make up for the cheesy parts of the plot and the at times lame dialogue.
Horrible.
The voice acting is horrible.
The dialogue is horrible.
The story (a leftist propaganda film, by the way) is horrible.
The cheesy cliches are even more horrible - I mean come on, at least think of a better name than Unobtainium for the resources the evil military is searching.
Wait for $1 rental on Red Box.
It's worth watching in 3D for the fantastic visuals and is an all-round decent action flick, but don't expect a very deep plot. The movie is long-winded but makes up for it with a decent climax, however as Dekron said it is rather cheesy and shallow, pretty much every cliche and stereotype has been packed in + the dodgy military/corporation vs natives cheesecake. I was also very unimpressed by how similar every alien species was too earth analogues, like the viewer is too stupid to comprehend anything else. It's certainly not original if you look beneath the gloss.
However my recomendation is that this movie is definitely worth seeing.
O_o o_O
I understand it is like Fern Gully on steroids. I'm cool with that, and will be going to see it probably this weekend.
It's a decent film but I think the person who created the plot, should've used the 10+ years wait he had for the technology to become good enough for the film, to keep developing the plot and make it much better than it is.
We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
I dunno I found the movie enjoyable (I'm a rather jaded and hateful bastard so that's like saying it's good).
The dialog was expected from a holiday release non summer film. It was geared towards younger people. Whom given the numbers with twilight...do not give two craps over dialog.
It's very eco but all in all it's pretty much how that stuff rolls (you really fking think tribals give up their homelands for us to make IKEA stuff out of it? )
It wasn't a military so much a corp task unit. (See>Blackwater).
Now telling em to wait on the redbox is cruel.
Look if you are going to see this shell out the 13.50 see it on IMAX3d . Otherwise just watch Ferngully. Same story really.
I was expected it to be worse according to the trailers and what I'd heard of the story, but when you see it in the theater in 3-D IMAX, the visuals kind of transcend the lackluster story. Though it is pretty much Pochantas on another planet... not great dialogue either. Still, I was pleasantly suprised by how entertaining it actually was.

Lol true story:
I was watching it and the scene with the fire on the that thing that is the central plot piece caught fire I actually WAVED my face to get ash and embers away.
GOD BLESS IMAX3D's enhancement.
I'm seriously ruined people. When people are crying about 10 dollar tickets I'll be crying about 20 dollar tickets because I can never go back. EVER.
I watched a nice movie today and it was called Avatar.
Very nice. My favourite parts were:
- How they named the resource which all of the humans in the movie are fighting for (it is totally like how people named Pokemon creatures).
- How they animated the plants and animals in the movie (which takes place on an alien world called Pandora).
- How the politics were realistic. The humans want to mine the above resource, and the aboriginal 'aliens' do not want the humans to be there for various reasons.
- Culture. I found the human culture very realistic, and the aboriginals cultural seemed realistic as well (just like Canadian aboriginals, they are very spiritual, and follow signs in nature, and value life of the prey they hunt).
I think this movie had a lot of fight-scenes though. The main character is a diplomat, except that he has to do all sorts of crazy stunts in order to join the tribe of natives.
Then the humans are bored, so they decide to start mining - except that the aliens live on top of the mining site. This is where the politics went downhill, and I didn't like the plotline anymore. The natives get pwned by modern military technology, and... Decide to fight the humans.
I don't really see killing as justified, but the aliens decide to protect their homeland - much like Canadian aboriginals, though most of the fighting takes place in the air while flying (which is the coolest place for any fight to occur), instead of on the ground, which was what happened in The Last Samurai.
If you've seen The Last Samurai then you may already know a little about melee fighters attacking armed infantry (who have guns). Hmm... Through some massive stunts, however, the main character (and his geeky scientist sidekicks, whom I liked a lot) are able to prevent a lot of loss of life, and in the end... The humans are forced to stop their mining practices.
Yet in hindsight, I doubt it was a good move to stop the humans from mining. You know how humans are with valuable resource deposits. I think that fighting-off the humans has just advanced the alien genocide, and in a couple hundred years, the aliens won't exist anymore. However, all of this fighting does lend the movie a happy ending, as well as lots of realistic fight scenes which occur in mid-air. I really liked how the ending was a bit reminiscent of my favorite movie Nausicaa, except instead of protecting the humans, the main character is trying to kill them all
I guess I should have expected killing in an action movie.
Considering it is an action movie, the morals in this movie were better than I expected, and I would recommend it to all age groups... I would also recommend Ponyo, but it is not playing in theatres where I live.
Edit: I also really liked the movie UP. My favourite part was the part where... The doggies flying airplane do this imitation of the Star Wars Trench Run.
That ^
It's like Beowulf, only it tries to take itself seriously.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
Visually you wont have seen anything better. But it got way too boring in the middle for my liking.
this thread reaffirms my choice to not rely on game forums to get an idea of whether or not a game is any good. Seldom if ever has anything been perfect or ideal in all facets. When certain points, no matter how minor, are focused on and given as a reason of complaint I start to wonder if the person was solely looking for points to complain about. A smoking supporting character, an underlying political theme, etc. are things critics are pointing out. These are things that when complained about make be believe the person wasn't there for the enjoyment and artistry of the experience. Avatar was extremely entertaining for me as I soaked it in like a sponge on a wet spot in the desert. I left the theater wishing it was another 2 1/2 hours long.
Nicely articulated, to bad the movie wasn't written with as much flair.

You don't have to rely on it, read the information and make your own informed decision. Your taste in movies are apparently different from others, this hardly suggest that other peoples opinions about the movie are unreliable or inaccurate.

There is just not enough reason for fighting in the film. Why is the "unobtainium" so expensive? What are they gonna use it for? There's just so many questions that needs answers...
The year's most ambitious film is so breathtaking, it detracts you from the fact that Cameron's characters are caricatures, and too much of the dialogue is stock. The good news? None of it matters.
Gorgeous movie, but the plot was cool, new, and original back in Dances with Wolves.
Go see it in 3-D if you're going to see it at all.
There is nothing new in the story department, but let's give it some credit for tapping into a cultural zeitgeist of sorts and approaching its well-worn story with renewed technical pizazz
Although the cinematography was incredible, I found the message even more important, especially with regard to the current environment in this country where, reasons for war go unquestioned and this nation’s treatment of its indigenous population has been and continues to be shameful at best.
Watch it mate, not only for the effects, but also the guy's journey. I really feel for him.
Personally i think this is a good movie to promote 3D...

/Agree.
The movie was worth more than the money shelved out for it. Watch it, enjoy it, it's definitely worth the theater.
KillerTwinkie - That one guy who used to mod mmorpg.com's forums.
The Plot was out in the open and wasn't diluted by 10,000 random sub-plots that make no sense.
The characters, were not very well drawn and the entire background history of the whole movie was almost non-existent. But, it was a long movie and I'm willing to bet that an extended DVD will be out and I'll be sure to get that.
Dialog had no problems, but some of the voice acting, especially the main female blue-cat-woman (sorry, I forgot what the race is called) was pretty bad. But the script, didn't have any problems.
The cast was good, the main actor fit his role perfectly. Sigourney Weaver, didn't really pull of the scientist role too well, imho, but she wasn't bad. Everyone else was great, except the main female blue-cat-woman.
The mix of CGI and RL was blended very very well.
The character movements in the CGI were virtually perfect, even for the creatures that didn't real natural forms to base off of. Amazing amazing work there.
All in all, the only thing the movie was really lacking was a better drawn backstory on the characters and the plot. But, the movie was over 2hrs long and doing backstories on everything, probably could push it to 3-4hrs easily. So, not a big deal. It was a great movie and I can't see why anyone has any criticism over all the other non-CGI aspects of it. It was an amazing movie and an instant classic.

Ok, just saw this movie in IMAX 3D. My breakdown. On a 10 pt scale 10 being best.
Effects / Visuals - 10 Even for a jaded "I have seen it all before" movie guy, I was wowed by the world.
Music - 9 This is a VERY high score for me to give any soundtrack. It didn't intrude on the movie and set the mood well.
Story - 3 Here is Avatars failure, the story is so over the top melodramatic that even my wife was a little insulted and she loves dramas. I guess you REALLY have to trim back the intelligence level of a screenplay to be guaranteed that blockbuster movie. I knew exactly what was going to happen 15 minuets in, and I was 100% right all the way through. "Unobtainium"?! Really? Thats the best name for it you could come up with (I know the history of the word)? Plenty of plot holes, bad ones that poked at me like mind splinters. But worst of all just insulting, to humans, to aliens, hell even to the Marines! (jk you luvable lugs)
Acting - 4 Poor and forgettable all around. The bad acting runs the gamut stereotyped and stilted, to just plain bad. The only actor who manages to pull out any kind of emotion from me sporadically, is Zoë Saldana (Neytiri) but it's far from a great job even from her.
Very pretty movie, not a good tale. Was much happier with the movie District 9. I know, two very different movies. I just wish Avatar had some of the same caliber writers on it's staff.
Put simply, Avatar is the most visually fantastic film I've ever seen. It will be hailed as the groundbreaking 3D release of its time while setting a new standard by which all blockbusters are measured. Yes, it's that good.
here is a plot summary i found informative
