Thinking of picking it up

(this is my second time trying to post this...i hit the back button on my mouse due to cold and it erased my post)

Hey guys, I picked up AoC a long while ago to try it as i LOVE the conan IP, i didnt find the game particularly to my liking, but to be completely honest i dont know if i even gave it a fair shot.  with my friends abandoning me in the worlds of warcraft (which i hated anyways but played to be part of 'the group'.

that being said, i know i have read a lot about things being able to 'wtfpwn' you in the pvp.  im not what i would consider a 'power player' but definetly like my share of power.  is the game a little more balanced between casters and melee?  I am not a huge FoTW player so the less people that play what i play usually the happier i am.  is there any underplayed 'good' classes?

how is the community?  i like being able to talk while i adventure...is the community pretty open and happy to get new blood?  some games seem to have an elitist stigma associated with them and you have to dig out people willing to help.  along with that is there any servers i should try over another?

i will end up solo most of the time, as my buddies arent hearing AoC at all.  does the game lend itself towards solo play?  IE: can i be 'competitive' in pvp and able to pve solo efficiently?  will this have a huge impact on the classes ill be able to choose in order to do that?

thanks a ton for listening to me and making it through the post.  hopefully ill see you guys in the game.

This really is not WoW/EQ where Gear makes the man. Here in eVE, the man with biggest balls, willing to risk the most, will win. It is risk/reward here- not always wear best items 24/7 and beat the crap out of all else.

Well I'm not a good one for alot of your questions but I'll give you the view from the Forever Free Trial Zone.

From what I've read there is an imbalance between the classes.  At the lower levels it's not that appearant, but the higher you go I think the caster side becomes more dominate.

End game Pvp supposely has a lot of problems with the imbalances and the seige warfare crashing.

The community in the Tortage starter zone seems pretty quiet.  I've only seen 1 real conversation that revolved around Pvp / PvE servers and area's.   I think alot depends on the server.

Speaking of servers you'll need to decide on the Hard-core RP-Pvp server (probably the least forgiving of newbies), Pvp server or a PvE server (where you can still Pvp but only in certain area's).

After that you'll need to pick what kind of pop level you want.  There's only 1 RP-Pvp, 3 Pvp (1's the Oceanic server and has the lowest pop) and 3 PvE (same here with the highest being on Wiccian server).  Recommend going to the O-boards and checking out the server specific forums to get a feel.  Alt is to stick a toon on each and see which works for your play hours, comp power etc....

By what I've seen the game is very solo friendly until you want to raid, mass Pvp.  As far as PvE'ing on a Pvp server you'll need to carefully choose the server.  PvE'ing on say the RP-Pvp server will be murder, where doing it on the Oceanic Pvp server will be doable.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but maybe one of the more experienced players will speak up.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

Class balance is very bad and always has been in this title...they change stuff but it just does the FoTM thing and they usually do strange things to balance like they just said casters can't use stamina pots or ranged stuns anymore. Most people have a few different level 80s so they will just play whatever is strongest at the time so are not under played good classes, most classes don't have roles to much like pretty much every class can DPS, most of em seem to tank ok aside from raids, and only a few can heal....this game has very little to do at level 80 and always had so the people who play keep making new guys.

Turn global chat off or will wonder if any adults play this game...is juvinile potty humor on all servers. The players are desperate for new blood yeah, this game had a very small population and after last patch so many players stopped playing. Plus many players up and quit because lack of content or other reasons.  Are no leetist, this game is casuals only, though you will get hammered if you chat about PvP and play on PvE server because it doesn't happen much on PvE servers. Only a 3 servers in EU and another 3 in USA have any populations so choose wisely.

This game isn't much into grouping. You won't have enough other players your level to do the few grping things anyway. You can grp up to do solo quest though. You probably want to play an over powered class so just play ToS like everyone else.

Funcom has reviewed all of its assets relevant for

recognition of an impairment loss of around
3,1 MUSD for Age of Conan due to a decrease in

Totally disagree 100%. It is not hard to find a group in this game. My experience the hardest to find a group for is Prison Colony. This game is very much into grouping for dungeons. Wow you really haven't played in awhile Finaticd, either that or you had a reputation when you played and no one wanted to group with you.

It seems to be that the community on PvP-Servers is more agressive and hostile while on PvE-Servers is more calm and helpfull.

Classbalance is as (un)balanced as in any other MMO and people complain about each other - i would not give a dime about bcs its the common tactic to scream around till you get the soother...

This whole FFA-PvP-Concept does not work out as it kills of its own playerbase.

So if you are not a hardcore PvPer try a PvE-Server.

What Server depends on your continent as america and europe are divided.

Best is to look in the Conan-Forums into the Server-Forums for population-level as it is discussed many times there...

I'll provide the same comments that I recieved on this forum when I started AoC; a prophecy which came true.

You'll probably like it.  For about 2-3 months.  Then you'll probably quit.  There's little worth doing in this game other than combat, and even the greatest combat in the world only stays fun for so long.  And there's less than enough content to take 1 toon to lvl 80, unless they're still giving out double xp potions.

The box is cheap enough nowadays that you'll still get your moneys' worth.  So, have fun!  Try a HoX; they're a blast!

Agreed. At the price of a box now its a good value. The first 20 levels are worth the price.
