I realize at this point it's mostly speculation, but it can pass the time while waiting. So, based on the FFXIV logo and the answers to these questions from SE, what's your take on the "hidden" meaning?
Q: How important are the weapons?
A: Weapons are very important and have a heavy influence on your character and how they succeed in the game world. Square Enix says to look closely at the official FFXIV logo for hints and hidden meanings about how the game will work.
Q: What hidden meanings?
A: Square Enix told us that when it approached Amano to do the logo art for FFXIV, that weapons were very important and to think of the concept of a "wheel." Specifically, a wheel of adventurers that has their weapon in front of them and an exposed backside -- which leaves each adventurer to rely heavily on their comrades and their friends.

Hopefully this will mean two things -
1. You wont play rock, paper, scissors with 1 mob at a time and will actually get to fight floods of mobs similar to more of a Guild Wars style.
2. Teamwork will actually mean something more than tank goes in, healers heal and dps does their damage. Hopefully classes will get more synergy with each other and be able to perform jointly with their team mates.
My Guild Wars 2 Vids
If I had to guess;
1. The class system mocks FF tactics in that equiping an item will give you certain abilities that you can hard-lock to your character through repeated use, perhaps blending the styles of multiple classes over time.
2. Perhaps a "group cover" system is in where proximity to other players grants boosts, and even takes into consideration what sides are covered (or not).
Just guesses.
