EQ2 or Vanguard?

I started out mmo's playing a lot of browser based games. Then i bought Guild Wars. And then, I finally bought WoW =P. It was fun for awhile but i never felt that sense of community i did in many of the browser based games i had played.

I have heard a lot of good things about EQ2 and Vanguard and that their communities are pretty helpful and somewhat social. I was wondering which would be a better game to start up and play? And you can also throw in some other ideas too. Thanks!

     Vanguard's community is small and the world is large and often empty...

    Vanguard has come a very long way since its launch.  Remember though, that most MMO gamers today remember only that it had one of the worst launches of all-time.  If MMORPG.com did a "worst launch" countdown, Vanguard would be near the top.  I say that to reiterate what has already been posted.  Because of the negative stigma the game has received, server populations are considerably lower than EQ2.  This wouldn't be a bad thing necessarily, IF the game world wasn't so massive, but its size just adds to the emptiness.  The game has turned into what we all hoped it would be at launch, but "too little, too late" is the cliche that comes to mind.

     

    EQ2, on the other hand, while still much lower than WoW in terms of population size, has enough people to support its size.  EQ2 is also a great game.  For me, Vanguard has more to offer, but opinions differ greatly, as I'm sure you well know.  I'm reasonably sure that both games offer a trial.  I suggest you try them both out rather than taking someone's word for it here.  You really can't go wrong with either, but the only way to know is to try them.

     

    One last thing:  With population size in mind, if community is what you value above all else, I think you'll have better luck with EQ2's larger population.

    Thanks for all the info wanderic! i'm going to try EQ2 first and see how I like it. I do value community but also content and have seen that EQ2 has put out many expansions and have heard that they are adding another one very soon. Hopefully all goes well!

    I think vanguard released a statement they will not be focusing on new content just bug smashing and people marked it as the end correct me if im wrong

    I can tell you first hand that EQ2 is WAAAAAYYYYY more populated.  I started EQ2 the other night and there were 42 people just in Timorous Deep starting zone.

    This really is a no contest.  EQ2.  VG has come a long way but while its finally launch ready, EQ2 is has been for a long time and has mountains of actual content to explore.  Add yearly expansions and quarterly content updates, engine upgrades and the gap just gets wider and wider.  I fully expect VG to go into maintenance mode this year.  No content, no patches other than server maintenance and critical fixes.

    I currently sub to EQ2, but own VG and have subbed on and off for both.  VG just doesn't have the draw EQ2 does.

    Thanks everyone for posting. I'm currently downloading the EQ2 trial and gonna give it a test run. I'll post back with more info on how it goes. But yes i did just read the VG is dieing and will probably not make it to 2011 =(
