Could Mortal Online be the next hardcore MMO?

johnmatthaisjohnmatthais Member CommonPosts: 2,663

Well...after pre-ordering today on a whim after hearing a lot of things, good and bad, about the game, I decided to take a look at some vids on Youtube before I'm able to play it when my new laptop comes in...

Here's what I found

- Pretty good graphics

- Skill-based

- Horseback combat

- Intense PvP

- A solid combat system with blocking and attacking

- Huge enemies that can literally kill you by picking you up and smashing you into the ground

- A lack of any kind of newbie guidance other than their quick-start guide on the download page

- All sorts of environments including sewers

- A sort of slower combat, but still one that seems like it would keep your blood pumping

- Great customization

- An apparent lack of content

Honestly, I don't know. I'm still skeptical as hell and going based on what I've seen and heard, but I can't pass judgement until I play. I'm hoping that's tomorrow, but who knows? I may finally find an MMO that will keep me hooked once it has more content and some of the issues have been ironed out. I'm hopeful, but not too hopeful. I've heard all sorts of bad things about Star Vault.

In any case, it couldn't be any more of a waste of money to me than Darkfall was. Mortal kinda reminds me of The Elder Scrolls and I loved Morrowind and Oblivion so who knows?

EDIT: The title was supposed to be "next great hardcore MMO"...oh well...

So far it feels good to me. It still needs a lot of tweaking and the world is still virtually empty.

I think the coolest thing is the blood mix system. Pick your parents races and end-up with a half or quarter breed race that takes looks  and stats from the parents and combines them.

That's pretty cool. Haven't heard about that. =D

    Anything related to politics?

Also, I know it's supposedly in beta, but from what I know, the world is empty because they wayyyy underestimated the time it would take to finish the game and it's nowhere near "complete."

I don't think a year of development is enough to release a game.

    From the FAQ:

Q: How long has Mortal Online been under development?

A: We started planning Mortal Online back in early 2002, but the project really took off in 2005.

Haven't seen any politics. Supposedly we will be able to build/raze cities, but nothing there yet, that I know of.

And the world is empty. A few mobs here and there with very odd aggro and tactics. Ran into some animals the other day, the first 3 just stood there and let me kill them, a couple ran from me and then another attacked back and killed me.

Aight, well, sieging should be fun when it's there then. Shows promise. ;)

Lol, never said it wasn't empty. Simply stated that they originally planned a Sept 09 or so release and the world is probably empty and the bugs there because it's NOT finished and WON'T be any time soon because they probably didn't expect it to take this long.

...either that or the PvE aspect is intentionally small and I'm an idiot. =P

The game is in beta, and it will mainly compete with other hardcore PvP games (well, that means DFO).

Bugs with aggro and the other issues will most likely be fixed at launch, my bet is also that more mobs will be added.

The thing with few mobs is also something people complained about DFO on, the games focus on PvP and even if they will add a lot more PvE will not be as good as in games that focus on PvE. So far have no game pulled off good PvE and PvP, most can't even offer good PvE or good PvP.

The game however do have some potential and I think DFO should be very nervous about it.

Seeing videos, I'm still confident in the PvE aspect, as well. I'm sure it'll get fixed by the time launch comes around and afterwards more mobs could be added.

I also don't mind the horse-back combat. If you can fire a bow off a horse, I might do a happy-dance because it's starting to remind me of Mount and Blade a bit lol...

Also, DF has a right to be nervous. MO promises that much more depth in the aspects DF has and then some, lol.

I'm not looking for 40 man raids or anything like that. I would just like to have the option to go out and fight orcs and trolls at times and possible take 4 or 5 friends on a dungeon crawl to see what's hiding. This was one of the big selling points initially, they stated that there would be 1 time spawn bosses and events and that those bosses/events would yield items that would never drop again.

Heh, we might have to wait on launch for that one. ;)

theres nothing hardcore about video games. Besides that if the game launch goes well and most of the bugs are gone the game could be successful.

  • Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

I'm not sure about hardcore but a deep and immersive sandbox? Hell yeah. I've been waiting for the game to come out for a long time and without even playing it im quite positive that its a game i would most definitely enjoy. As for people saying its only for hardcore pvp guys, i disagree, i think there going the UO style and it owuld be an actual sandbox rather than a pvp game.

  • johnmatthaisjohnmatthais Member CommonPosts: 2,663

     Yeah, true Gabby. ;)

If this shapes up to be what it's supposed to, it's putting a lot of features I wanted in a game but that I didn't want to play in the games they were in. Maybe it'll be the first game other than Sociolotron (which I've steered clear of due to the extremely high amount of sexual content) to have a huge selling point be "true freedom" lol.

It looks promising and if sieges are done right, we could have some epic end-game PvP going on. ;)

I dno most people take deep and immersive type of games as hardcore but this iso ne of those words where everyone has a different meaning to.

I think, in this case, the term hardcore is only used to indicate that the game is one that is harder to play than most, does little to nothing to guide you and institutes harsh penalties for failing to play well.

Yeah, that's what it means. Difficulty.

Im still watching it.  I've played quite a bit of Darkfall and had quite a bit of enjoyment out of that game with its drama and crap, but it's complete lack of, what I think to be, welcoming game-play for smaller bands of players to be able to have satisfactory ownership in the environment has me growing tired.

I love the sandboxy openness of these kinds of more player-driven ecosystem games, so we'll see.

Hopefully everythign works out so far beta has been a rough ride but has been steadily improving but a few things will change like, the newbie guidance will be more integrated and not just a word file on the beta download page and they will have more content.

As far as hardcore the game is exactly that but everyone in the community doesn't seem to be bloodthirsty and that's a good thing i think.

The game looks like a 8 year old Unreal mod.

Darkfalls population is growing rapidly right now. Waiting and hoping MO won't be a bust is a bad idea... DF will still be on top.

I am playing it,The game needs worlds of polish. It will take an act of God  to get MO released as a well polished game.It will take hit at launch because of this and we all haven see what happens when game fails at launch.

If Mortal could delay it release about 5 months it could be a special game.No doubt in mind it will be released to soon,One year later Mortal will be great game but will anybody be playing it ?

I doubt it, this game has all the makings to be a failure at launch and they don't have the money to sustain themselves after a fail launch so even though yea this could be a good game a year from now, it won't receive the kind of production it needs up until then.

    Rise above hate.

    Ignore fan boys.

I simply love all those: "it will be so good at release.. it will have soo many features.." and then see all this b**ing when it will be released incomplete. =P

  • CoolWatersCoolWaters Member UncommonPosts: 104

    It's bad.  Really bad.

The upside is that I won't ever fall for a paid beta again.

DF is bad, but it's 1000 x better than MO.

Pretty empty and featureless for something that started planning in 2002 and started development in 2005.

Here's what a friend had to say about it: "its not like being a person, its like being a cart from walmart, loaded down with sandbags with horseblinders and diving goggles on your eyes."

    I agree with him.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the lead coder is completely inexperienced and the only thing he's ever done was make mods for unreal engine based games in UScript.

Unfortunately, even if they can pull off a solid release the game is still likely to have a horrible community.
