Based on you votes, most people still do, actually I was one of the people calling them by their old names and said I always will but this is how it works for me. Once I started getting into the hype of things and looking for info everyday on the game you start to earn a respect for these new and improved races and they deserve a better race name. Each name kind of has a nice ring to it, minus the Lalafell lol, but even that has kind of a nice ring to it in the since, that is what I would expect a creature of that stature to be named hahaha lol. Now when I am talking to someone who plays or played FF11 back in the day I refer to them as their old names so that there isn't any confusion. Look at the names the are more fitting in a fantasy realm, think about the immersion into the game. Hyur: Honestly reminds me of the citizens of Zelda games, the Hyrulians, a kinda cool name, I don't know if it is pronounced this way but this is how I say it, Hai-Ur Elezen: Really not that different from Elvaan, they sound almost the same but looks better than Elvaan, Seems more like the name that the elves would call themselves, +1 cool point. Lalafell: Think of something along the lines of a hobbit. A cute small rotund group of people who are cheery and happy, hell they remind me of teletubies but less queer and definately more cute. Lalafell is a fitting name for these new Taru and I believe once you dive headlong into the game and get into the story of the race you play you will call them by these names. Mi'qote(Me Ko Tay or T not sure): I love this, sounds more like a tribe name, and them being just that, a race that roams in tribes this name is way more fitting than Mithra ever dreamed to be. Roegadyn(Ro gay den, prob different but that is how i see it): Now they actually sound like a name of something, Galka was lacking, not only in name but in everything lack of character mainly. They are reborn now into the proud name of Roegadyn. Being an Elvaan in FFXI for some reason I am more drawn to play a Roegadyn this time, this race has improved drastically compared to its old counterpart the Galka. It seems they pumped some life into these hairless dogs, took away the tail, added some expressions and made them more proportionate, what more could you ask for? Hopefully they aren't asexual and we will see some kind of beautiful beast woman, think of the Hulk he is ugly, but look at She Hulk, a damn hottie, the females can look different than the males if they ever make a female Roegaden. this goes with mi'qote as well, hope we see some bad ass Man kitties in the future!
I like this guys take on the new names. Even though the character model is the say the story is different. I've see nthis happen in other games like AIon where people call the broker the Auction House aka AH. New game new names. If you keep using the old names and aer too lazy to type out the new names (like once and every blue moon you'll actually have to) then you will look like an old person who can't accept that things have changed.
Besides the new names are pretty awesome especially the Roegadyn! Sounds like a amurai or warrior to me!
I completely agree with the thought that people calling them by the old names will be easily identified as FFXI players, and will probably get picked over people using the new names. It might not necessarily be fair, some old players will use new names, but meh, it happens. Aside from that, someone else had it right when they said everything will be shortened anyways, and i'm sure people will still be throwing out "let's find a brd or rdm," or any random old job that is similar to new one. i'm sure there will be something comparable to drk, drg, pld...all that jazz. I always give new players a chance, they mess up- it's cuz theyre new, help them out. They mess up again- boot.
Subject says it all... Me? Hume mithra galka elvaan taru all the way, i wont use that weird name for mithras especially lol, i aint typing apostrophes where i can just say mithra
well from a guy who have played EQ2 and not 1, know how annoying it can be ppl keep talking about the old game - not that ppl shouldnt talk. but ppl need to accept its a new game, which Ive met quite afew in EQ2 that just cant.
either way am very intrested in FFXIV and am not going to play FFXI just to know what ppl talk about in term of races, so would sorta see it as rude to call races by old names by default, just because they dont like the change.
new game new ways of doing things, do not expect a graphic/controlled upgraded FFXI....will safe yourself some disappointment too, and see what the NEW game got to offer, now I understand they have made the "new races" look similar to FFXI, and that being the reason for this post, but it will exlude new players to consequent use FFXI terms that aint present in the current game
How often is race mentioned really? I never played ff11, but in every other mmo people talk about class but rarely mention race. Its always "Need a healer and we are ready to go", not "We need a dwarf healer". About the only time race is mentioned is when someone is asking "which is the best race for a healer class"? But really that only happens when someone is rolling a new character.
I'd personally try to learn and call them by their new names. New game, new content, might as well call them by the new names. I really hope no one goes through the process of only inviting characters who call themselves by the old names, kinda shows the lack of integration into the new community, I personally wouldn't encourage it. Kinda elitist but idk, and think the new names are cool anyways.

I'm sorry but a Taru is a Taru.

Definitely new, but I am sure we will see 1000's of Lalafelle's running around named 'InsertCuteJapaneseSyllables'taru.
Haha I'm sure we will too. It's going to take a long time before the FFXI names fade out, that's if they ever do.

since I never played FF XI and don't know much about the races, I'll probably call them like 'Big dude', 'small dude', 'thin dude', 'red dude', etc.
Lol; good poll.

well svann you only talking about group gathering, for some roleplaying is importent then race means alot - not that I am one of them :P
