IS FPS Dependent on Resolution and screen size or just resolution?

luckypotatoluckypotato Member Posts: 251

This has always puzzled me.

are frames per second dependent on Only resolution, or a combo of Resolution and screen size?

For example:

Will you get the same FPS on a 15'' 1080P monitor than on a 50'' 1080P TV. Assuming all specs are the same but size.

Or would the FPS be identical?

Thanks

Resolution is the only variable. Usually changing screen sizes also changes resolutions. If your using a TV with low resolutions, you will get the same FPS as a smaller monitor with the same resolution, just larger pixels.

An interesting question.  If both are 1080p though aren't we necessarily talking about the same number of pixels?  If that is the case I don't see how it would affect fps.

But if we are talking a difference in resolution, then I believe it would affect fps.

I'm no techie though.  I can't wait to read the responses :)

Yeah just resolution matters. My screen on my laptop is on'y 15.4 inches, but I have it going at a 1920 x 1200 resolution. So if i make a window smaller on the screen which would lower the resolution of the window fps improves. Higher resolution more detail to render.

Bigger screen would just make each pixel larger considering it was the same resolution as one that is smaller, and wouldn't change the framrate at all.

Edit: Also figured I would add that all the other video settings also would effect fps even more than just resolution. Most of the time when I play games I will lower things such as particle density, and some of the effects in order to give myself a higher resolution. IT's all a matter of finding the right balance to make things looks the best way you can.

Would you care to share your laptop model with me?

And thanks for the reply. Makes perfect sense now :]

I have an Alienware Area 51 M15x. I wouldn't recomend Alienware though, but thats a very long story with a lot of history. I do have to say though I like the resolution, and not too many laptops have screens like it.

In fact resolution affect a little bit the frame rate. It all depend on your videcard. and seriously playing with 1080p res on a 15' for my part is not nice ! on a 15' try 720P instead. To come back to my story of resolution and frame rate, if you have a 1gb+ vidocard memory youll be fine with framerate. if you have 512 and lower use 720P.

no its resolution and heartz of your screen best heartz for gamer is around 32 fps below that you start to notice it.

that one very old trick ps3 use to get insane looking graphic they cut in half thehertz so instead of 60 or 75 as is often the case with modern gear they used this old geezer trick i believe its set at 25 or 30 heartz

thes the frequency ,the more heartz the less fps

but good luck tuning that since most card manufacturer have locked it to 60 sometime nvidia is bold and lower it to 59

if you find a way to lower it to say 35 .i sure would be interested i would rated have prettier graphic for same fps then crappy graphic and fps.but then they would probably have a harder time selling graphic card.or maybe the new kind of screen dont work at 32 heatz dont know since im not an it tec

dont forget if you find a way for nvidia 8800gt link the way here i am interested.i was using that tweak on my p3 laptop way back lol.it was avail back then

Monitor can affect Frames Per Second under one circumstance that I know of.

If the renderer is set to honor Vsync (vertical sync refresh of the monitor) and the monitor has a low refresh (lowest I've ever seen is 52 hz and that was an ancient Mac monitor) then FPS wont pass 52 frames per second.  Most games give you an option to honor or ignore Vsync, and most ignore it by default.

Other than that I don't know of any.  I've never seen software that was more than resolution and Vsync aware.

correction i just checked ps3 use 24 hz.only in europe they use 50 hz and they need everything specially made for them.

    yep hdmi 24hz

if it was 60 hz i bet ps3 would have lag issue on mmo lol

anyway my screen support only 50/60 hz if i understand correctly.
