Ok, what the heck?

I just downloaded the trial, and logged in.  Then I got the loading screen with all the expansion packs...  And it loaded for a little bit, said that there are too many players logged in, and told me to exit the game.  What the heck?  I tried on multiple servers, multiple times...

You're not likely to find anyone here that still plays such an ancient games. This is where gamers go to complain about how new games suck after they're already tired of the old ones. Try Mythic's DAoC forums.

Merlin might help. Or their customer service. Seriously, I heard they switched providers recently. Try again in a few weeks once the dust has settled?

A quick google showed me several other forums where people have the same problem. Looks like the hamsters are indeed overworked.

Read my post - I just downloaded the trial.  I don't have time to "try again in a few weeks."

Thanks, everyone else.  Their customer service sucks, but I'll try the forum.

Uh, that's ridiculous, you do know you can just make another trial account and get another free 14days or whatever "in a few weeks."  Email accounts are free and you can make as many as you want for an endless # of trial accounts for any MMO.  You just have to start over each time or pay to continue using the char you want to keep.

was it the European Version or the USA version. I am asuming its the EU version you have tried I think the problem might be that GOA will be closing their servers on the 31st Jan 2010. See below a post from their news section.

The Closing of GOA's Dark Age of Camelot Servers

Even the most wonderful stories come to an end, and the story of GOA and Dark Age of Camelot is nearing its finale.

After eight wonderful years of operating Dark Age of Camelot in Europe, our license with Mythic Entertainment will soon come to an end and GOA will no longer publish or support the game as of January 31st 2010.

We are currently working with Mythic, who will be taking over the game and its European community, and will soon be providing details about pressing player questions such as existing subscriptions, character transfers, game versions, localization, and more.

And so it is with a heavy heart that the GOA team is letting go of what is, for many of us, the symbol of our commitment to MMORPGs.

We have already started to browse our (sometimes dusty) archives, track down fading screenshots, and retell old anecdotes. The mood is nostalgic, and we'll be sharing some of those precious moments with you all in the retrospective of these eight years of adventure in the weeks to come.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support over the past eight years and hope to enjoy with you these emotional final few weeks.

Good gaming to you all !

The Dark Age of Camelot Team

    Hope this is of help

A few months ago, DAoC combined all their regular US servers into one cluster, Ywain.  It's really one server, everyone plays in the same areas, but housing and character lobbies are clustered.  This means you can have 10 characters for each realm (Mid, Hib, Alb) on each instance of Ywain (Ywain1, Ywain2, etc.)  All of those characters would play on the same server, though.  Additionally, within the game, each instance of Ywain has it's own housing area to allow ample lots for all the players' characters.

Because of this merge, and a recent slight uptick (it seems, anyway) in returning players, Ywain has been pretty crowded.  As this was happening, EA went and laid off 1500 employees, which wreaked a lot of havoc in Mythic.  As a temporary quick fix, they've capped Ywain somewhere around 4,000 players.  If you try to get on and it's over that, you'll see the "can't login" message.  It usually happens prime time in the US eastern time zone (6-10 PM) and Sundays, too.  Any other time, you should be able to log in without too much issue.

If you look on this link:

    www.camelotherald.com/news/index.php

The right side has server pops.  You'll want to watch the "Ywain Cluster" total.

The EU accounts have not hit the US servers, yet, as far as I know.  That could prove interesting, as it could mean a few thousand more active accounts.

EDIT: Also, the Pendragon note doesn't apply here, that's a completely different server.
